Rapid Reaction: 2018 Preseason Debut 26-24 Win

Postby Nano » Thu Aug 09, 2018 9:20 pm

In the 2017 finale, I thanked the Bucs for an exciting last minute finish. Now, we start the 2018 series with another last minute win.

All 3 QBs led TD drives and even our rookie RB found the endzone. The Phins had 8 QB changes but Petty probably looked the best. First teams looked solid and showed promise. We still can't kick. On to next week

Cam Beats gets the nod for me.

For a preseason game, it was pretty entertaining.

Brentson Buckner. That Dline looks MUCH more like an actual NFL Dline that it has in over 10 years.

Sergio Bailey... really clutch on the last couple of drives. Whitehead plays with absolutely no fear.

QBs looked good... WRs looked good (how about that depth?)... rookie DBs looked pretty good... all in all pretty solid.

Wasn't able to watch but saw Ryan Smith had a FF and INT, that's pretty darn good. How'd he look outside of those?

He was getting picked on early... he has the skills to hang at CB and he made some plays which you mentioned, but I don't think he holds off Davis for long.

Yeah, I was actually happy when Miami went ahead because it made the end more exciting and we got to find out more about our players.

That forced INT at the end did not make up for the terrible game he played.

What makes you say that? He looked pretty much like he always does. Tries to do too much. Throws into coverage instead of taking the shorter safer throw, took a terrible sack during the two minute drill...

Defensive line didn't rack up sacks, but still had a good impact. I liked that we had 2-3 passes batted at the line, there could have been more I've been drinkin.

I expect Peyton Barber to have a good year as long as the o-line is serviceable, Peyton gets the yards that are there plus a little extra.

Ronald Jones first play in the game he dropped a pass, although it had no impact it was still bothersome to see because of hearing his troubles as a pass catcher in training camp. Did look good on a couple runs, he can "put his foot in the ground and talk to me with your face."-Jon Gruden

biggest dissapointment of the night i thought was obvious, Ryan Smith. He was beaten several times by no name receivers. I've seen Ryan make good plays against Julio Jones at times, so I do have hope, but tonight he was exposed. Nevertheless, he was there to make the pick on the last play of the game. There is still a lot of plays left before regular season, we got a win. Go Bucs!

Ya he just seems to be that guy QBs go after and have success against consistantly.

I didn't see the entire game but post-game Dirk said someone had a groin injury. Who was he referring to?

I won't get to watch the game until Saturday morning on NFLN. Watched the extended highlights. Some questions:

- Which Ryan did a better job? I realize Fitz was against the 1st teamers and Griffin was against the 2nd-3rd-4ths.
- Is anyone else terrified about our kicking yet again?
- The highlights showed both Stewart and Davis in some nice coverage. Is that consistent with the whole game?
- Did the rookie QB from Arkansas play at all?
- Was Jones as bad as his numbers, or was it blocking?
- Was the 1st team OL as solid as the results would indicate?
- What did Whitehead do that has everyone so excited?

-Both were good, I still would trust Fitz more though, no question.
-meh, if we weren't the Bucs, we'd wouldn't think twice about it.
-they both were consistantly very good. Davis in particular looks like he's a plug and play starter.
-No.
-2nd team oline was awful, nowhere to run and Winston running for his life.
-1st team OL looked great, opening up holes for Barber (who could be the real deal), and gave Fitz plenty of time.
-Whitehead just is an athletic and badass mofo who's looking to bring the pain.

1. I would say Fitz looked better considering he was facing the 1st stringers. He was generally accurate with the ball and picked up yards with his legs as well. Honestly, all 3 of the QBs played well today(Winston had the worst moment with his spin away sack but that was probably going to be a broken play regardless)

2. It's concerning, but the dude has a decent history of being accurate so maybe it was just rust(They pointed out he was one of 6 kickers last year to convert 25PATs without missing any).

3. They both played well, especially Davis. He got beat early on a few off coverages but throughout the game, he was either near the ball or breaking it up. Stewart held his own as well.

4. Austin Allen did not play at all. It was Ryan Griffen for the entire 2nd half.

5. Jones showed nice burst but overall the 2nd-string Oline did him no favors.

6. Meanwhile, the 1st string oline did Barber plenty of favors as they gave him decent holes. His first run, nobody got a good hand on him until he was past the dline.

7. Whitehead had a couple good tackles and pass breakups. He had a solid outing himself. Needs to be more careful with his hitting though as one of his tackles knocked him out of the game and made them evaluate him for a concussion.

It's the 1st pre-season game.

Ryan Smith had me annoyed too. I started thinking he just isnt getting it, but at the same time he comes up with some key tackles, maybe even TD saving tackles. Then you have to figure in that we were playing really deep into our roster. Needs to get better but I can easily see someone else taking over to be the weak link to be exposed.

Nigel Harris LB looked like he had a pretty strong game and I thought Justin Watson looked good too, the fumble was some unfortunate timing and a great defensive pop on the ball.

Bobo had the most missed passes with 2, damn we look deep with the WR's...

Run defense? Again, I think we were playing DE's at defensive tackle most of the game, albeit Lambert and Stevie T got a few reps.

10 PD's and 7 QB hits and still almost bucced this up.

RB passing game looks bad bad and Sims got no targets, also it looked like they were giving him an ultimatum - run behind the porous o-line or else.

Ogunbo***wale looks like a pretty stout RB. We may need a mini beastmode running back effort this year. Hold that thought until we see if we can improve.

Ryan Smith does not need to cover the top 2 WRs. He got abused after Hargreaves went out with the hammy issue.

Cappa is a real road grader, fun watching him run block
Gholston is not very good
VH3 is not very good.
we have a kicker now, game winner and not worried about the first preseason
Whitehead can bring the heat. hope his arm holds up.(gruesome arm injury in college) PWPG
JPP is the real deal, its gonna be fun watching him and GMC and Vita
all the 2nd rd picks looked good.
