Kress wrote:Changing the rink size would be great, but it would be so cost prohibitive because the stadiums already exist and are structured to fit what we have. I just don't see it. But I would love to see it. I love when there are double penalties and everything gets opened up. It's more fun to watch. But the logistics of changing existing rinks. Ugh. The money people will not like it.

Always follow the money...but this seems to be where all of these rule changes/enforcements are heading...or where they're logically heading.

There is always the possibility that the Higher-Ups are trying to bring the European-style of hockey to the NHL WITHOUT actually going all-in (incrementally)...but expanding the rink size to the European/Olympic size is the logical progression.

Starting in the early 2000's (with enforcement of obstruction and allowing 2-line passes to no longer allowing substitutions on icing calls) and essentially neutralizing the Neutral Zone Trap, up to now (with strict enforcement of slashing), the game has been moving into this style. It makes sense. Fans want to see goals and back and forth, fast play...these guys are amazing athletes...let them show off. Watching the NJ Devils win Stanley Cups by mugging every opponent that crossed the blue line, was BORING AS ****.

I guess the proof is in the pudding. Tampa has sold out their arena for 3 straight years now and out-draws the MLB Rays. When that happens in TAMPA...that says something about where the league is headed.

Cooper called out the boys after a lack-luster performance tonight.

Interesting to see how they respond against the defending champs tonight.

This team SHOULD put a beat down on PIT. Let's see what kind of testicular fortitude this team has...

The boys don't look right. This is the 3rd straight game where we're just muddling through. IF we played a half-decent team tonight, we'd have been beaten badly.

Does Dotchin mean THAT much?

The offense is in a funk. The defense (Sustr/Koekoeek) just don't look or play well.

Not concerned...it's along season...but would like to see the offense pick it up again.

And Vasy is STILL a beast.

They’re back to their sloppy pass game of the last couple seasons.

Bolts lost 3 of the last 4.

Time to blow up the roster, bench Stammer so he doesn't get injured and draft Oline!!

Again...I'm just chalking this up to the ebb and flow of a LONG season...but they played like **** tonight. Again. They had what...15-20 SoG? The defense looks sloppy and out of whack. The offense is slow and sluggish. No (or very little) puck control.

This team is too talented to be putting up 2 goals/night. Vasy...and a few post-ringers, kept the score from being much worse than it was. BOS dominated this game and let the foot off the gas in the 3rd.

Interesting how this all coincides with the Dotchin injury. Coincidence?

It almost feels to me like they believe their hype and can just roll the puck out there for an easy 6 goals or so. It looks like an effort issue. Who knows. Maybe some nagging injuries or something?

I think it’s a total lack of effort and like you said just rolling the puck out there thinking they will win.

I'd buy that for a game or maybe two...but it's been a pretty consistent, shitty effort for about 5 games now. I don't follow the NBA but maybe it's a similar deal.

They know they have a big lead and they're gonna coast for a week?

I'm far from concerned, at this point...but they've got my ****ing attention...

Not worried here , we have the best team imo , the lack of effort is frustrating but it is a looong season

I also hear something else today that I hadn't noticed (having not seen all of the last 3 games):

Apparently, Cooper has been juggling lines...mixing them up to find something more productive (specifically 2nd/3rd lines). That may have a bit to do with it as well.

Next 2 against San Jose and the Isles. 2 tough teams.

Apologies to Swashy:

Your boy (Conacher) has looked strong in his 2 appearances with the Bolts. He's making the most of his opportunities.

He's playing where he should be playing (I'll always disagree he's a 1st line guy) and has made the most of his time here.

We need a winger. Badly. Conacher is 2 for 2 and has provided the scoring that the other 3rd/4th liners haven't.

He's more than earned his chance to stick with this team. And that says a lot about his ability...considering how good this team is.

Good call.

Ooops.

Just noticed that Cooper had Johnson playing on the wing tonight (2 goals).

Kucherov playing on the wing (2 goals).

Conacher playing on the wing (1 goal).

Ok...maybe Cooper knows what he's doing.

It's been a long time coming that Johnson finally breaks through. Hopefully this means all hell breaks loose with it because if we can keep him going along with Kucherov getting back to the level of play we can consistently expect from him, the Lightning shouldn't have a problem scoring anywhere from 2-4 goals a night. The most impressive thing about this year has not been the offense but rather the maturation of Andrei Vasilevskiy. I had very serious doubts about his consistency, mental fortitude and maturation as a hockey player in regard of being ready to be a #1 goaltender. He only ever put together brief stretches of play because a backup only ever plays briefly. Last year after Bishop went down Vasy scared the hell out of me. But he's silenced me now and answered all my questions because he's playing close to on par as the same level of Bishop. Give him those 2 goals a night and I don't think we're going to lose many games. With strong goaltending and the offense finally figuring itself out after a rough 5-6 game stretch hopefully this means the Lightning will have a strong December and can continue to pile up the points necessary to clinch a playoff spot.

It would be nice to be in a position where we stay healthy and have a playoff spot locked up so we can rest the big guns beforehand no differently than a team that has mathematically secured the #1 conference seed/bye in the last week of the season with a 13-2 record and is basically undergoing the formality of their last game of the season. I don't know what kind of record that's going to take for the Lightning or if Jon Cooper would even do that but it's nice to at least be able to think about it.

The Bolts have quit the 2nd period. Same old Bolts. They decide to take a period or 2 off before they decide to start playing again.

What is it with these guys!?

LOL!

There were still 4 minutes left in the 2nd.

I suppose I shoulda waited?

Like I said...5-2. The good guys.

****ing nuts the way this team can score bunches in a hurry. This isn't the first (or second) time this year they've done this...

So do the Sharks.

The Bolts have spanked a LOT of good teams this year...LA, St. Louis, Columbus and Pittsburgh.

Still tough to find a team that will beat them in a 7 game series...KEEP HEALTHY!!!111!!!

And we roll on.

Jesus, this team is deep. Good to see Killer get one. Uncle Kuch rings one off the post.

The Colorado goalie kept this from being 10-2. And they still hung 5 on them.

Even with Budaj in goal.

Looking forward to SAT vs. the Winnipeg Thrashers. Another good team.

Nah...it's working perfectly. It turns out "Sergachev" means "****ing STUD" in Russian.

Who knew?

Winnipeg is a talented team. They play like the Bolts...but they're a LOT bigger. They're gonna be a problem in a couple of years. I very much, would prefer not to see them in the SC Finals.

Another tough one on Tues night @ St. Louis....the NEW "Best Record in the West"...after us beating the OLD "Best Record in the West".

Thank God we have Arizona and Ottawa coming after.

It feels like we've played one of the league's toughest schedules to this point. It seems like every other game, we're playing one of the top teams in the league.

When the schedule gets a little more "friendly," I hope the Bolts don't let their guard down. If they can sustain the level of play they carry into games vs. other top teams into the games vs. bottom feeders, they can rack up points in a hurry. Just a little worried about playing down to their opponent.
