Sex Workers

Postby Zarniwoop » Wed Jul 04, 2018 9:12 am

I'm not sure we have ever discussed this on the site, heck, maybe there isn't much to discuss...but what are your thoughts about sex workers and the legality of it? Do you think prostitution should be completely illegal including removal of the practice from Nevada? Do you think it's OK as it is -- illegal everywhere except Nevada. Would you favor decriminalizing prostitution? IF so, what types of measures would you want to put in place to help safeguard the workers and customers?

Libertarian website write about this a lot (like they do drug and sports betting decriminalization)...in fact the LP party just adopted the following to their party platform:

"We assert the right of consenting adults to provide sexual services to clients for compensation, and the right of clients to purchase sexual services from consenting sex workers," reads the new language, adopted by vote today at the Libertarian National Convention in New Orleans. The convention brings together Libertarian Party members for forums, speeches, and debates, while delegates vote on proposed amendments to the party's platform and bylaws and who will be the national leaders.

ADMIN -- if this topic is a no-no for some reason I apologize...please remove it.

Sex work should be decriminalized. If consenting adults engage in it I don’t see a problem with it.

Yeah, but you're gonna have a tough time selling it politically because no parent wants their kids to become sex workers. And nobody wants a seedy brothel in their town.

I think that opinion is becoming more popular but it still pretty small. Unlike many issues, I think you have people on both sides of the philosophical spectrum that would oppose it -- what we call the old school Christian Conservatives on the right and much of the feminist movement on the left.

I'll be honest, I've gone back and forth on this issue over time.

Feminists should openly support a woman’s right to choose what to do with her body. If they don’t they’re hypocrites.

I don't think you can find a bunch of bigger hypocrites then the radical feminist. All the time a good chunk of them write about how legalized prostitution is the patriarchal exploitation of women and should be avoided at all costs.

Not my cup of tea, but as long as it's not hurting others, decriminalize it. My only concerns would be STD's spreading and the issue of taxing the 'workers'.

I think it should be decriminalized and regulated by each state.

Not from what I've seen/read over the past few months/years. I mean, it's hardly ever in the news. So if there are serious discussions about decriminalization, I'm not aware of it.

Just did a quick Google search about decriminalization of prostitution. Most of the links are to discussions of pros & cons. The first instance of actual legislation was an article from Oct. 2017 where D.C. is considering it. So it looks like this is strictly a states issue and not federal. Is that how you see it?

Yes, as I see it, there is nothing in our Constitution that gives the federal govt the authority to criminalize it or regulate it. Until there is some kind of ammemdment I do see it as a states right issue. As far as I know, the laws prohibiting it are state laws. I should have clarified my earlier comment in saying I was asking if you saw states legalizing it.

As for that question I don’t think we will see legalization in other states in the next 10 years.

I don't think the government should have any say in what happens in the private lives of consenting adults having sex with other consenting adults.

Thats the problem. Those ‘adults’ aren't always so consenting. And they’re not always adults, until all of a sudden, they are.

We should be wanting to make it harder for these girls to find themselves in such filth, not looking for ways to grease the wheels, imo.

In singapore it is legal in the red light district (geylang). the women are checked every 2 weeks and have a yellow health card. very efficient.

Which is why the profession would need to be regulated. At the state level, of course.

That seems reasonable, I do think you would need aggressive regulation of health and age of workers

Absolutely. Would some **** get by? Sure. No regulations will ever be 100% effective or efficient. But, as a whole, I think regulated prostitution would be a lot less prone to age abuses and health related issues than what we have now with illegal prostitution.

I tend to agree. We will see a nice corollary experiment when marijuana is legalized as to effect it has on crime. I’m guessing most drug crimes probably involve the harder stuff but at least we will get some empirical data

I know there's a stigma around sexual stuff but...

There's a woman in Tallahassee who works at or possibly runs a massage place (yes, she's Asian) and she's been arrested multiple times for the happy endings. The fact that a massage is legal but the other part isn't seems like a weird line to draw to me.

I'm in favor of decriminalizing but it's not something I'll lose sleep over in it's current state.
