FDR vs. Lincoln

Postby Mountaineer Buc » Mon Jan 01, 2018 4:03 pm

Work and the holidays got in the way so I'm getting this back in gear before my year end accounting has me totally swamped.

Franklin Delano Roosavelt

Greatest American of the 20th Century

Great Depression, World War II, all from a wheelchair. Subject of an awful movie starring Bill Murray.

Abraham Lincoln

Greatest American of the 19th Century

Considered by many to be the greatest President of all time for his stewardship over the country during the civil war. Subject of an incredibly boring film starring Daniel Day Lewis.

It's difficult to determine the superior of the two (if there even is a superior in this scenario) because their actions and circumstances were wildly different. I'd say that both Lincoln and Roosevelt were irreplaceably integral to the nation we live in today. Lincoln managed to repair the break in the union and Roosevelt either created himself or paved the way for pretty much all of the great policies that the Republican party has been trying to destroy for the better part of 60 years.

At the end of the day I'm voting FDR because the North probably would have still won the war and slavery would have been abolished pretty quickly anyway if not around the same time. It was getting unsustainable and many of our allies and peers were either discussing doing away with it or already had done so.

I'm not sure that any other man besides FDR had the combined balls, stubbornness, genius, and charisma to pull off what he did during his 4 (3.5 really) terms. I mean the guy was able to get elected 4 times consecutively. That's impressive.

Lincoln exceeded constitutional authority more than any President in history.

Dude made a state by decalaration.
