it's the nihilist's corner of the "red pill culture" - the "red pill" room is much larger than MGTOW - I'd estimate that it only takes up about 10% of the overall space.

Funny enough, I’ve been seeing that sentiment circulating social media as of late, but didn’t know it was a movement, or had a name.

But I do know the type.

Is ‘red pill’ a reference to the Matrix? Lol.

With CES in Las Vegas every year, it was just a matter of time before they started to automate major local industries...

Not exactly on topic, but this is the last thread I found where there was discussion of universal income. May as well post it here.

Here's the problem I see with this plan.

It's not universal. He's doling out the money to low income individuals and leaving out everyone else so that makes it means tested. Without it being universal, it's just another poverty program. Not that it's a bad thing and it should yield some positive results, but it's only a result for a segment of the population.

This Stockton experiment definitely bares watching. Not a lot of details in the article. Such as, exactly how many people are they talking about? How long can the person collect the UBI? How will it be funded for the long-term? And many more.

Embark’s self-driving semi truck just drove from Los Angeles to Jacksonville with minimal help from its on-board human driver, the company reports.

The autonomous tractor trailer completed a 2,400 mile trip from Los Angeles, California to Jacksonville, Florida in five days, traveling for “hours at a time with no disengagements,” says Embark CEO Alex Rodriguez to Engadget.

There are 3.5 million truck drivers in the US

Cool and scary at the same time. If I'm a young trucker, I'm seriously looking into another career choice.

Truck driver is often listed as one of the worst jobs in America...it certainly is one of the most dangerous and most unhealthy.

Trying to shift people to other jobs away from these might not be a bad thing.

That being said, we are decades away from driverless trucking.

People drive truck for a reason, Zarni. It pays good.

Long haul truckers make on average $19 an hour. That's a living, albeit one that isn't ideal.

I was going to offer a friendly wager, then realized it would be 15-20 years by the time we had our answer :D

I think it'll be before decade(s) plural - my guess is by 2035 there won't be another human truck driver on the road

"Amazon is going to kill more American jobs than China or Nafta ever could."

There's merit to this point. Im old fashioned as hell about certain things, I don't like the idea of buying things online sight unseen. But people that I work with shop online CONSTANTLY.

They'd rather order the garden hose on Wednesday to water the garden on friday evening rather than go to the hardware store on the way home on Friday. Putting it that way makes a ton of sense now that I think about it. As a matter of fact, I just ordered socks a week ago because I felt I didn't have time to go to Kohls.

Anyway, this is killing retail jobs. Especially in things that dont require touching the thing to assess it's value.

Even grocery stores are adopting the model.

Your concerns are predicated on the fear that people, society, or our economy won’t evolve. I have faith that it will... as it always has.

I’m pretty much in this boat too. We have been replacing labor with automation for 250+ years. We have continued to find new tasks for the displaced labor. I suspect we will continue to do so ... that’s not to say there won’t be growing pains along the way

I think everyone in this thread agrees that automation and unemployment is inevitable. Are there any folks who are advocating for government involvement to impede this process?
