That crap hasn’t hit my campus. I don’t at all feel threatened that a student will “report” me for mis-gendering or using cis-gendered defaults. And if they did, my administration would tell them to pound salt.

I teach freshman only, but we have a lot more non-traditional students than say a UF/FSU does. I catch myself calling them kids to coworkers, but in front of the "kids", I call them students.

It seems "Boys and Girls" is no longer deemed suitable for elementary kids ... at least in Florida.

How funny habits can be ..... I leave my office, keys in hand, to go down to the conference room to grade projects (and spread paper out). As I shut my office door, I turn back and I click the lock button on my car key fob

My "new" car - not really, I've had it for 3 years, but by comparison - does not even use a clicker to open. If I have the fob in my pocket, I just walk up to it and pull the handle. Then it's a push-button start, and an automatic transmission.

My "old" car, that I use for trips to the hardware store, to haul kayaks on the roof rack, etc., requires the clicker to open, requires using a key in the steering column to start, and is a manual 5 speed.

When I hop in that thing to go do something, I'm all kinds of confuzzled. Walking up and yanking on the door - no dice - then getting in, fastening my seat belt, and reaching for the dash to start it, only to realize the key is back in my pocket. The whole nine. Then I switch back, and as I'm driving my regular car, I pull up to a stop light and my left foot is searching for the clutch.......

Good times.

Deuce wrote:What pronouns do you guys use for men and women?

I pretty much universally use "guy" to describe men. Unless the person seems really young, like 18 and under, in which case I might say "kid." Doesn't seem to be any problem there.

For women, I've always used "girl" for women that seem about my age or younger. If the woman seems a bit older, I'll say "lady". I'm just running into an issue as I get older (I'm 31), where the lines are getting blurred. What's a "girl" to me now was surely a "lady" ten years ago.

I'm bringing this up because I recently went to a conference for work and when telling stories later, I referred to some of the women as "girls." Talking about professional women at a work conference and referring to them as "girls" seems awkward, and my gf said I should probably just use the term "ladies." But the term "lady" really just makes me picture a woman in her 50s.

Have you tried "broads" or "chicks"?

On the male/female gender naming:

I generally use guys/girls for most of the younger crowd (as in 20's & 30's) and gents/ladies for the older crowd (40's & up). I sometimes use guys when addressing a mixed group to include everyone (i.e., "So where do you guys want to go?").

The problem isn't here in anyone of your chosen labels to address the group(s), the problem lies in inviting one into the group with a victim complex looking for any perceived slight to blow their lid over.

"What do you mean 'GUYS?' ... do I look like a 'guy' to you?"

Spoiler:
"Yes Joe, we know your preferred term is 'gentlemen' ... calm down"

Eggshell culture.

Fun fact: The origin of calling a girl shorty - or shawty, I guess - is the Three Stooges. Curly used to call girls that. It referred to them being the type to wear a short skirt (in the 50's), and meant that they were narcissistic hussies.

'Sup shawty.

Somewhat related? Mini skirt got its name from the car, not from its length.

Also somewhat related? The mini skirt, or more specifically, the girls wearing them was one good reason I showed up to school everyday.

So I've been listening to a lot of Eminem lately, and it got me thinking. The guy raps about **** thats unheard of, has drug addictions, yet comes back time and time again to transcend his previous work. Has there ever been an artist like him? So open about all of his issues. Yet so closed off at the same time.

You're assuming he is telling stories that are true in all of his songs.

Kanye raps about how crazy he is and has been more relevant than Eminem for over a decade.

My 7 year old son rucked with me for 7.5 miles today with a 10 pound ruck for Veterans day. He never complained and refused to take a break.
