I tend towards the episodic escape from reality podcasts. Stuff like The Once and Future Nerd, Bright Sessions, The Adventure Zone, Tanis, Rabbits.. etc. Audio storytelling type stuff. It’s the bees knees.

Before my addiction to podcasts I did NPR on way to work and music / sports radio on way back. If I’m out running errands I still do music. My podcast listening is for my commutes and long drives (90 mins plus) to races...until I get about 15 miles away ... then I put on thrash metal or punk :)

I still listen to music, but it's either Spotify or Amazon Music. I just prefer being more in control of the genre/artist than listening to a radio station.

I like the specificity of on-demand options podcasts and streaming music offers vice what's on the radio. I can get news and traffic updates a bunch of different ways.

I do like listening to the popular sports radio folks like Dan Patrick, Rich Eisen, etc.

Most of all I don't like listening to ads, so anything that lets me FF through them has value.

Actually, it's more like 16 minutes. But who's counting? lol

However, even during the 2 hour drives to Richmond to visit my daughter and granddaughter, I listen to music. :D

If Malone is growing on you, might I suggest elevating your playlist with a sprinkling dash of Riff Raff:

Lizzo is awful. Our work station plays her song 5 times a day. It gets old. Plus her lyrics make no sense. I prefer Nicki. At least she could rap.

Anyway, I'll be active talking football on this one. maryjanewatson99. Feel free to not care about this post on any level.

Ban-hammer was quick on this one ... Sorry MJW, your thoughts have been deemed ... #wrongthink.

In all seriousness, I'd prefer a longer format read from you ... a blog contributor would be a good start.

He really is pretty good, whenever he gets around to playing actual music. Forget the crap on the radio, put him out there on his own with an acoustic in his hands and he's solid.

On a semi-related topic:

If you ever happen to hear that song Dance Monkey, I am so sorry. It is awful. But catchy. But crap. But causes involuntary toe tapping. But is horrible. But will stick in your head and make you sing it for days on end.

I lovehate it.

What pronouns do you guys use for men and women?

I pretty much universally use "guy" to describe men. Unless the person seems really young, like 18 and under, in which case I might say "kid." Doesn't seem to be any problem there.

For women, I've always used "girl" for women that seem about my age or younger. If the woman seems a bit older, I'll say "lady". I'm just running into an issue as I get older (I'm 31), where the lines are getting blurred. What's a "girl" to me now was surely a "lady" ten years ago.

I'm bringing this up because I recently went to a conference for work and when telling stories later, I referred to some of the women as "girls." Talking about professional women at a work conference and referring to them as "girls" seems awkward, and my gf said I should probably just use the term "ladies." But the term "lady" really just makes me picture a woman in her 50s.

If they are adults I think "ladies" or "women" is better than "girls"

Fwiw I view "lady" has a term of respect for a well mannered female. Just as I'd use "Gentleman" for a well mannered male.

I struggle with this all the time in class ... and trip over myself.

I generally use guys and gals (I'm dealing with 18 to 22 year olds mostly) when there is a gender specific group I'm talking to. When they have mixed teams, I try to say "folks" but because I'm such a male chauvinist, patriarchal butthead, i often say "guys" out of habit.

As for older groups of people like you are talking about, I often use guys/gals as well (in informal settings)...and have been told in the past that some ladies take offense to that because it is demeaning. So when i remember, I use "ladies".

When in formal situations, like when I'm consulting, I try to avoid pronouns all together and use words like "group", "team", etc.

Recent PC push has hit the home front ... "students" is the proper term now ... which I imagine is highly offensive to those that choose not to do their homework or pay attention in class.

That crap hasn’t hit my campus. I don’t at all feel threatened that a student will “report” me for mis-gendering or using cis-gendered defaults. And if they did, my administration would tell them to pound salt.
