Single handedly saved SNL ... correctly stated .. Murphy was solid back in the day ... and there was never a "race" card.. he was just funny ...

I'll tune in

No race card? Guess you never heard of Pryor who is an idol of Donkey.

The only time Eddie Murphy has been funny in the last 31 years is for 3 minutes of Bowfinger. That's it. If you're under 35 or so, it's entirely possible you've never seen Murphy be funny in anything new in your entire life. And if you avoid "blue" comedy altogether, and you're only familiar with Murphy from his fami-crap movies, the idea of Murphy being a talented comedic performer probably seems like gaslighting.

SNL is tougher for two reasons:
One, you (as in, all of us) remember SNL as being in it's prime during your personal tween-teen years. It's near-universal, like believing that real pizza is whatever pizza was popular in your home town.

Two, unless you happened to be born around 1965, you're probably wrong about that period being SNL at it's best.

Bonus Third: Even if you disagree on either point, there's no GD way it's happening now.

So true, and so sad.
In fact, I forced my wife to sit down and watch Raw just so she could have an understanding of exactly how far off comedians have fallen.

Dana Carvey years were a good mix. In Living Color was good as well as Mad.

SNL these days is like you said hanging on by the memories of what once was funny, is now (more often than not) too scared to be funny.

Coming to America was released in 1988. And if you don't think Eddie Murphy (in any of his character forms) was funny in that, you might want to ask a doctor to remove the pole from your ass. If you're counting that as the last one, I'm sorry you missed Boomerang and Life.

I'm not saying he's funny now, or SNL is funny now. There's a 50/50 shot Dolemite is terribad. And there's roughly zero shot CTA2 is watchable. But if we're going to start saying he was never funny (like Pete did), you're on drugs. And not good ones.

Coming to America was fine. "Cutting edge" at the time (playing multiple characters but the movie doesn't hold up.

Plenty of funny moments and lines in Boomerang; very few of them included Eddie.

Now I can get down with the first 48 Hours and first Beverly Hills Cop.

Don't know about that.... The whole group that was on with Will Ferrell was pretty good. The Phil Hartman years were pretty good too....

Personally, I'm still an original "Not Ready for Prime Time Players" fan....

I'm not that old.

for me SNL was at its best with Hartman, Myers, Carvey, Sandler, Farley, Nealon, etc.

I don't think anyone did weekend update better than Dennis Miller.

Spot on with Dennis Miller. Surprised you like(d) him.

This is when it was at it's peak, IMO.

Ferrell was funny, but it was falling fast at that point.

ehh. I don't think he's got it anymore. I didn't think he was all that funny on Bill O'Reilly 10 years ago, and MNF was a flop.

But his rants on his HBO show were great, his standup was great, and he killed on SNL.

I was being facetious. To be honest, that's just when I personally stopped watching SNL. Some of those that came after were pretty funny in things I saw them in. I just didn't see them in SNL because I wasn't watching anymore.

I've never seen funny SNL except in reruns. And I'm older than most here. SNL was funny with the original crews, Chase, Akroyd, Murphy, et al. It was never funny after that. Occasionaly they had a funny skit here or there. But nothing consistent.
