Buczone Age Range

Postby Crocaneers » Tue Jun 19, 2018 7:17 am

We have a few threads with association to Baby Boomer, X gen, and millennial. I figured it was time to take a pulse of our collective.

Appreciate the candor

I'm a fringe Millennial/GenXer born in the late '70's.

I grew before a computer was in everyone's home. I took an actual typing class in 8th grade (with a typewriter). When I was young I had the the freedom to go play in the neighborhood with friends and just had to be home at a certain agreed upon time of day. We had a set of encyclopedias and if you wanted to know/learn something that is where you found it. I know the dewey decimal system.

Message boards were in their heyday as a popular communications medium from the mid 90s to mid 00s, by my rough guesstimation. Most of the youth these days have moved onto different ways of communicating like Reddit and Twitter and whatever else. Most older fans didn't jump onto message boards at the height of their popularity, just like I don't do what the kids are doing these days. People tend to stick with the mediums that were popular when they were teenagers or in their early 20s.

Using that as a basis, I'd guess that the average age here is 25-40.

Chatrooms.

Don't forget the chatrooms in AOL back in the day. I remember when you could get .wav files added to your login so instead of the generic "Welcome" and "You've got mail" I had Anthony Hopkins say "Clarice is that you?" and "You've got mail, goody goody!" Pretty sure Christopher Walken did one too.

I turn 41 next month and voted in that over 40 category.

AOL chatrooms were ****ing awesome. I think it was the inception of online trolling. I remember being in my early teens using dial-up just to see all the crazy chatrooms out there.

ahhhh AIM... gettin that OG cybersex *****

I was born in '88, world of warcraft beta came out in like 2003, so I was 15 - up until then I had ZERO interest in reading/writing - hell I don't think I read a book until I got to college. Just cliffnotes/BS'd my way through. My high school buddies and I were some of the original top players on our WoW realm server - and there were some 10,000 players per realm. We were HEAVILY involved with the forums. We were considered the top alliance PvP group (world PvP back then) - we spent our days roaming around stirring up **** with the top players on the other faction and were generally well known by most of realm (lol sounds cheesy but it was true). Anyways, we were on the forums nonstop, as it was the only way you could talk cross-faction, and it was a good way to boost your "celebrity" in the game. Your play was one thing. But your attitude and shit-talking brought you to a different level.

So anyways, a couple years later, I'm heading to college and had spent the past 2-3 years typing nonstop on the wow forums, and I was corresponding with my parents/family via email. And I remember both my parents, individually, said to me: "Beardmcdoug, where the hell did you learn to write all of the sudden?? We have really enjoyed your emails and we never thought writing would be your thing!" They were avid readers and always lamented the fact that I hated reading. I told them then, and I still maintain today, it was all due to my time on the WoW forums. The writing skills I got from interacting on those forums - how to get a point across quickly, without losing the readers attention, expanding my vocabulary so the **** talking wasn't stale - that sort of stuff - was all thanks to the WoW forums. And those skills carried over into my college writing classes. Not that I'm some great writer - but I at least have an interest in putting thoughts to physical words these days - something I never thought I'd be interested in (was always more mechanically/physically inclined), and it's turned out to be a great outlet for me throughout my adult life. Funny how a video game got me interested in something entirely "unrelated". Video games are weird like that.

Sort of miss that era of the internet... the early 2000's forums... it was noticeably more an earnest/friendly or good-natured **** talking kind of atmosphere. It was definitely more of a dude-centric internet. That's why I like this forum actually - it feels very early 2000'sy in here

I'll be 31 in less than a month and a half so I voted in that group. But god seeing people talk about AIM and AOL chatrooms dredges up so many memories.
