So I’m looking for an AR 15...

Postby PrimeMinister » Sat May 19, 2018 6:38 pm

So I’m looking to buy my first AR 15. If you own one which brand/model is it and how do you like it? What advice would you give me during my initial search? Do you enjoy shooting it?

I’m considering the LWRC M6IC just for a point of reference. I don’t have much to compare this model/brand to yet. All experience and/or advice is welcome. Thanks!

It depends on what you want to do.

I personally don't think the brand makes a difference unless you are going for something custom like Cobalt Kinetics or something in that vein. Any lower/upper that is "mil spec" will be a good base. That's in quotes, because none are truly "mil spec", it's become a label for the set up.

Get a good trigger: I love my Geissele trigger.
A good muzzle brake/compensator (or silencer if that's the route you want to go): I have a Lantac Dragon, but I heard the Dragon Slay by F-1 Firearms is much cheaper and just as good.
A good barrel: depends on what you want to do
Upgrade your charging handle(makes it more fun, quciker/more tactical)
Get a decent sight: For shorter/more tactical distances...I have an Eotech, which I love, but some stick with aim point/red dot type.
Some upgrade the bolt to the nickel boron bolt carrier group. I have it and think it was a bit of a waste, but it was a gift.

I built mine for under $1,000.00.

Then you can slowly upgrade your rifle to how you like by changing out rail systems, grips, but stocks, etc. If you do it this way you can get an AR that will outperform (less recoil, smoother trigger, more accurate) for less than you would pay for a high end brand. Eventually you could get a lighter, custom upper or lower if you wanted to.

They need to increase the price of an AR-15 to something like 20-25k and the bullets 5k each. Then, they need to decrease the cost of drugs.

Just make sure you don't get the kind of gun that walks itself to a public place and opens fire on people all on its own.

I don’t think this is needed here. There are plenty of places in the political forum to soapbox your stances on guns/gun rights. Everything doesn’t have to be a fight.

He’s simply looking for suggestions.

This is an excellent write up and advice. Thanks, USC. I’ll research what you said and likely have a few other questions for you. Thank you for taking the time to give a thorough answer.

Do you live in Florida?

I was asking because there's a company out of Fort Myers that makes awesome rifles. They sell for around $800 but the quality is better than most rifles that sell for over a thousand.

My son owns one and it is a great rifle. I have a Ruger 556 with an upgraded bolt, a JP recoil spring, and an EOTech 512 for the optics.

Thanks! What was roughly the cost of your rifle as it is now?

I went by my local gun store (Palmetto State Armory) and just browsing:

Lower receiver: between $120-250 depending on what you get with it. (comes with milspec trigger) The $120 one from PSA has fired 2,000 rounds for me with 0 issues
Upper: 16" barrel around $300 or 10.5" barrel around $200
bolt carrier group from $69.99 to $160
Rails from plastic magpul for 28.99, to Mlock floating rail system $140 (really good IMO) to Daniel Defense Omega 9" rails $260
Magpul folding rear sight (29.99) to Troy folding rear sight $140.
G&R lower parts kit $40
Stock from $30-$200

Upgrades I would get from the beginning:

Geissele SSA trigger group $200(two stage trigger 1st stage 2.5 lbs, 2nd stage 2 lbs...awesome to shoot)
BCM gunfighter charging handle $50.00
Dragon Slayer muzzle break $90.00 (almost 0 recoil with this design)

You could have a built gun with the recommended upgrades for $980.00 plus mags and ammo out the door. I promise this would be much more fun to shoot than some Ruger or name brand stock AR and you can always upgrade the grip, rails, sight, stock later if you want. None of those things will ultimately affect your shooting, maybe your looks, the ability to add features, or if you want to do things like three gun or add speed.

Sight:

Eotech: $400.00 (love love love it. After 10 years of using aim point in the military, I wish I could use the Eotech everywhere)
Aimpoint: $400.00
Off brand aimpoint type: $100.00

I don't like full scopes on an AR that's shooting .223/5.56. I think it's ridiculous and pointless....I have a flip up magnifier, but never put it on. At most an ACOG would be ok, but they aren't cheap ($1,000.00).

Damn! Thanks, man! This is exactly the type of information I need. The model I’ve been looking at would cost $1500-1800 out the door. $980 is far more reasonable. I like the way you built that rifle and I’m going to build the same for myself.

Ruger - $650
EOTech - $400
JP recoil spring - $100
Upgraded bolt - $100

So I have $1250 into it mostly because of the EOTech. Don’t go with cheap optics. You can zero them at the range and by the time you get home they will already be off zero.

EOTech has been suggested repeatedly on multiple sites and videos. I’ll try EOTech and go from there.

EOTechs are great, but so are the Aimpoints and Razors. What state do you live in?

Florida has a huge gun show that has a regular rotation to several different cities, so it comes to Tampa about once every two months. It is a fantastic place to look at pretty much everything related to guns up close. Knowing Texas, I would assume they have something similar.
