Casino Royale

I'd put Skyfall ahead of Casino Royale. I think Skyfall is the best Bond ever, and I've seen them all at least twice and read all of Fleming's books (and a few that others wrote,) so I don't say that lightly.

My biggest problem with Skyfall is that is was so filled with dumb. So much of the plot relies on either the villain being obviously impossibly lucky or precognizant. Or, it relies on people who are supposed to be the most capable in the world at their job making mistakes that an entry level guy wouldn't do. Things like Q getting a suspicious laptop, one taken from directly from an epic hacker, and plugging that sucker directly into his network, a network that connects to everything important.

The happenstance of it doesn't bother me - there's some of that in any movie. I do acknowledge there was a lot of dumb, though. No argument. I just don't know if it's anything new. If you think about it, the whole conceit of, "Let's send one boozy guy to deal with our problems when thousands of lives are at stake" is pretty dumb. I thought there was just enough of a toe in reality with "Skyfall" to give it the emotional heft it depended on. It was a little more John Le Carre than most in the series, and a lot less Jason Bourne or video game, which was good.

Maybe it's just that it appealed to the things I appreciate most in movies - the cinematography was incredible. The blue-hewed shadowy high-rise billboard fight, the rich reds and golds of Asian gambling club sequence, the stark browns and tans of the abandoned city, etc. I loved all the actors they brought in - Naomi Harris, Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney, the new Q (name is escaping me,) etc. The villain was great, hitting the perfect note between evil, crazy, and pathetic. It didn't bog down with a shoehorned romance, either. I appreciated that.

All that meant more to me than the plot holes and deus ex machina moments. I mean, there ARE movies where that stuff would bother me, this just wasn't one of them.

Caught Passengers on Starz this evening.

I can see why people hated the ending. The human question of what would you do with your life if you had nothing to do would be far more interesting than the crisis they had to deal with before living out their days in a box, but they unwittingly teed up what could have been a great love story.

Still, I enjoyed the film despite ending with so many unanswered questions.

Saw "It" last night and it was really good. I'm not much on remakes or horror movies, but this was much better than I thought it was going to be.

Also saw previews to the new "Saw" movie, didn't even know they were making one.

Borrowed Rogue One from the library and watched that for the first time with the girlfriend. It was very well done. I thoroughly enjoyed it. K-2SO and Chirrut Imwe had me in stitches with a bunch of their scenes.

Only the brave.. about the granite mountain hotshot wildland firefighters. Great movie and the last 20 minutes were very heavy. The only time I think I have ever formed a tear in a movie.

Cool. Saw the preview, I'll check it out.

Saw the new Bladerunner.

My review:
Spoiler:
Reeeeaally wanted to like this one. I never say this... (all of my top 5 movies are long, slow movies)... but this movie just felt too long and slow. Just thought it was kind of shallow, thought the characters were kind of boring, and the plot didn't particularly grab me. LOVED the ambience they created - this lush, despondent, neon hazy dystopian future; the music, the FX, the cinematography were all top notch - some of the best I've seen in recent years, if not the best. Just wanted more depth to fill that well-crafted diorama. Give it a strong B- to B

Gerald's Game.

I never read the book, it wasn't what I thought it'd be from the trailers. I thought the sadistic version in my head would have made a much better movie.

I’m torn on seeing this. Really liked the first. But from others I trust who saw it...they said the same thing you did.

Wow. I just saw that and thought it was the most obnoxious one of the series yet. Casting was horrible, lead was unbelievable in the role, and the condescending speechifying at the end made my ears bleed. I spent one half of the movie constantly wondering "what the hell were they thinking?" and the other half just cringing.

Funny, I don't remember any "spectacle" in fury road. At all. It was bland.

Watched Kingsman (the first one). Was a kind of desperation "can't find anything else" watch. Loved it. Completely different from the Bond/Avengers/Man from Uncle clone I expected. Delightfully over the top and tongue in cheek, with fun action scenes (the "spectacle" that I am told Fury Road had but didn't). The church scene, from the incredibly unsympathetic/deserving preacher and patrons, to the amazingly overdone violence was masterful. The score was outrageously perfect for the scenes despite the bizarre disconnect that appeared on the surface. (if you haven't seen it, "Free Bird" and "Give it Up" by KC and the Sunshine Band are the music for the primary fight scenes. Oh, and "Pomp and Circumstance"). Samuel L Jackson pulled off a character I never would have thought he could. The villainous plot was so over the top James Bond villains feel like amateurs (only Draco in "Moonraker" - which every Bond fan wants to forget - came close). And exploding heads. An a princess who, well...Great flick.

I concur. You laid it out waaaaaaay better than I could have. I haven't seen the new one yet either. But I will.

Wonder

If you need a movie to put value in humankind, this is it. It's a really great fictional story, based on how life can really be. I am sure everyone knows the premise so I won't spend time here with that. What I will do, is review the movie approaches how we should feel and view life. We love to criticize and destroy anything that is now like "normal".

Take time, and see this movie .. I am almost sure I will again .. to get some more smaller nuggets.

Great family film.

I watched The Cloverfield Paradox yesterday on Netflix

Same series as Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane. The movie follows in the same pattern as the other two -- in that it doesn't have a bunch of alien stuff in it. It reminded me of Sunshine and Pandorum.

If you liked the first two Cloverfields you should like this one. It isn't a great movie by any stretch, but its fun nonetheless (even if incredibly predictable)

Putting this here, since it's more applicable. Regarding MJW's recommendation of Creep and Creep 2:

Because I like Mark Duplass, I made this my first watch from your list. I liked it.

I even turned it into a double feature and watched Creep 2 immediately after. I liked the sequel a lot more. I even think that it would be practically as good without ever seeing the first one (which I think is more a divisive "flavor.").

I'll check back in after I cross another off your list. Thanks, again.

Oh, and I still think Get Out was better haha.

Just watched Train to Busan on Netflix. It doesn't replace Sunday football, but its definitely a legit zombie movie. Highly recommend to those who can bare subtitles.
