Random thought I had and we've talked about generations a lot in here. Where are all of the Gen X'ers?

Everywhere I've worked, it seems like it's been split between either people on the brink of retirement or new people. Out of my last two jobs, I can maybe count a handful of people in their 40's. I guess the Boomers have held these jobs for the last 30 years and are just now opening up the door for the Millienials to come in and take the entry level jobs to replace the retiring employees. Maybe it's just because my parents are Boomers and I'm a Millennial, that I don't associate with many between.

If you're in your 40's, please explain yourself.

What do you want us to explain? There simply aren’t a lot of us. Our labor participation rate is as high as everyone else I think, it’s over 80%. We just don’t have #s.

Don’t listen to him. Your size is adequate. Actually studies show you may even be average.

lol I don't know, I just didn't know how else to end my post.

I'm wondering how many Gen Xer's decided to start their own business or do something more off the beaten path compared to other generations. Like I said before, I'd imagine they were already established in something else by the time the Boomers started retiring from all of the traditional career-type jobs. Disclaimer: Obviously, this isn't for every case but I'm generalizing.

That’s a good question about entrepreneurship. I’m not sure how we score on that in general.

As for being established, all my buddies seem to be. I guess it depends on how you define established. They seem to have mostly worked their way up...but my circle might not be representative

yeah, its an interesting thought. I'm sure the "feel" about the numbers is probably exaggerated compared to reality of the numbers, but my feeling is sort of similar.

The gen x'ers I know seem to have a pretty "hustling", enterprising attitude, not overly concerned with climbing the "idealized" mountain, but instead, doing more of what they want, how they want, to get just enough of what they want, and then doing a lot of that thing that makes them happy. My buddy who I went to grad school is exactly like that. He was 40 when I met him several years back, he's covered in tats, was one of those GG allin greasy ass punk rock mother fuckers back in the day, but here he was, working on a masters after having owned several small businesses (t shirt, printing shop). Dude had about 6 motor cycles he was always working on fixing up, raced all over the country. Was sometimes broke as ****, other times not, if he was, he'd just sell one of his bikes, then get a new one and fix it up and flip it, etc. Last I heard he still hadn't graduated and decided to open up a pool cleaning business to hustle and make it after he came into a bunch of free supplies. He doesn't care about appearances, but he cares about getting to do whatever the hell he wants, which is work on motorcycles and race them.

I get the feeling gen x'ers just kind of have a baseline attitude more like that, rather than boomer-raised millenials. We were raised to shoot the moon by our boomer parents who had everything at their disposal - why couldn't we, with that foundation? Only problem is, life isn't like that. There's not enough room at the top for everybody. And instead of just hustling like a gen x'er would do, a millenial gets depressed and checks out

(Depending on how you classify the exact dates of the generations) there were 76 million baby boomers, 61 million Gen X'ers and 85 million Millenials.

The Harvard Center uses 1965 to 1984 to define Gen X so that Boomers, Xers, and Millennials "cover equal 20-year age spans".

So Gen Xer's aren't just in their 40's. Their ages range from 34 to 53 based on the above definition. I know there is some debate on the dates, but for the most part, they all fall pretty much between the early to mid 1960's to the early 1980's.

In my company, there's a good mix of all 3 generations.

yeah, I mean, there being 20% fewer and 30% fewer than boomers and millenials, respectively, would be a little noticeable...

I think though as a % of workforce we (Xers) were about equivalent with boomers because of higher rates of women in the workforce now then before. The big thing is that boomers are working longer into their lives then the generations before them....and all the props to them for their spunk

This has a lot to do with people being generally healthier now than in past generations. We live longer, therefore we work longer.
And a preemptive, **** you, MB.

A coworker claimed today that I’m a “block of concrete” that has to be drug around the project. I’ve never been more insulted, professionally, in my life. I have no clue how to react. The conference call with management tomorrow will be interesting, to say the least.

Lemme give y’all some backstory here. I’ve got almost 3,000 hours logged at this site. Coworker is around 1,800. I have seven years experience in the industry. Coworker has ~one year experience. Coworker has accused our subcontractors of not knowing their job, they have over thirty years experience in pipe-fitting. One of my techs quite literally resigned because of the way coworker treated them.

The poison pill in all of this is that the president of our service group brought coworker on board from previous job. Like I said, the conference call tomorrow will be... enlightening, to say the least.

I appreciate the posts, gentlemen.

I just got off the phone with someone that reports directly to coworker. It’s become apparent that there’s a trend of coworker treating colleagues like **** and attempts to bully people into doing things the way he wants.

At the end of the day, I’ve got two interviews week after next, so I’m not super worried. But I’ll be damned if someone gets away with calling into question my work ethic, professionalism, or technical expertise. I’ve worked very hard for a very long time to earn points in all of the above.

But I’m also not above being an absolute ***hole, should the occasion call for it.

Take the high road. This could be a trap. If the owner brought him in, he is (or should be aware) of the character flaw. There may be a reason.

I shake companies for a living. It's a skillset. Make sure you have a road that's better than what you have or want.

So, the conversation never took place.

Also, received an email from my former company asking if I would be interested in interviewing for a job in their warehouse automation side of the house. Coincidence?
