Let me tell you about Bryan.

Postby Mountaineer Buc » Wed Oct 18, 2017 6:12 pm

Bryan is my nephew. He was born from a pregnancy that had complications that caused premature birth for him and his twin brother Craig. Craig did not survive but Bryan hung on.

Bryan was born with roughly 20% of a brain. This kid in the last 6 years spent more time with neurologists than a resident physician.

Bryan started out without the ability to speak or walk and was never expected to live beyond the age of 2. He's tripled that and still going.

I saw Bryan two years ago when I came to NWFL for Christmas. Back then, he would only sign for "I want" which typically was my hat. Now he won't shut up. Every night, he lays in bed and blesses his family. Uncle MB, aunt MB, MB cousins...he goes on until he remembers everyone he knows.

This week he had surgery again at Shand's in Gainesville to replace a shunt in his head that had failed and gave him seizures. That boy reminds me that my problems are diddly ****.

May he remind us all that our problems are diddly ****. He walks. He speaks. He learns and goes to school. All with 20% of a brain that denies him basic bowel and bladder control.

Next time the cannons fire, know there's a little boy named Bryan who is tougher than all of us whose favorite game is shouting "Bang!" With a finger gun.

Let the cannons roar. BANG!

My OP was a bit melodramatic, but I had a tough day yesterday and ol' Bryan has a way of reminding me that I've got it pretty good.

I'm told the folks at Shand's did a fantastic job replacing his shunts and Bryan is already home and not even complaining about pain.

Kid is tougher than all of us.

Thank you for sharing the story of Bryan with us, MB. It gives perspective by trivializing the worries in life that affect us much more than anything ever should.

Bryan is a true leader and warrior.

Fatherhood is without question the HARDEST thing I have ever done. When I met my step-daughter I could have imagined the degree in which she would struggle in her journey but I never could have imagined how powerless you feel when the assistant principal calls telling about the trouble she has gotten herself into yet again. Then when I read a story like this it really rolls things into perspective quickly. I should feel blessed that my daughter has a mouth that most days I wouldn't give a kiss too and an attitude problem that gives every adult she meets a run to the hills. But also that I know she can fully understand and appreciate our great days together because every man knows that not all of fatherhood is struggle. Her birthday is coming up and hopefully it's one she never forgets.

But at any rate MB I read your story and I'm touched by the strength not only of the parents but of Bryan. Keep us informed of how the little man is doing.
