Movie Remake Prediction Thread

Postby IchabodCrane84 » Sat Sep 30, 2017 3:30 pm

The movie Flatliners comes out this weekend, and I understand some of you may not realize it’s a remake of the somewhat cult classic starring Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, and Julia Roberts. Certainly not the worst idea for a remake (I’m talking to you Point Break), but it has Hollywood reaching deep into their vault for established content that might help them make a profit on a rather otherwise poorly written movie. It’s certain to not capture the cool dark vibe of the original and will probably get lost in obscurity.

But it got my brain a thinking. What else could they possibly do from here? What beloved classic will they rehash in the next 5 years? So, I created a list and included TV reboots into movies as that’s all the rave also.

1. The Matrix (Kind of a cheat I suppose as rumors have already been circulating around this one, but it’s been almost twenty years since the original was released. I can see Neo taking on the Morpheus role and it being almost a sequel instead of a remake.)
2. Star Trek: The Next Generation (I mean, how could they not? Star Trek was such a successful reboot and TNG was better than the original in a lot of ways. It’d be cool to see if they’d have a Tasha Yar character, and if they did what they’d do with her. Casting would be fun.)
3. Innerspace (I re-watched this one Netflix not too long ago. It still holds up. Replace the word miniaturization with nano and you’re in business.)
4. Ghost (Ronda Rousey is playing Dalton in the Road House remake and they’ve already remade Dirty Dancing, Red Dawn, and Point Break so it seems feasible that Ghost could be next.)
5. Quantum Leap (Another niche 80’s/90’s TV show that’s destined for an upgrade and big screen adaption.)
6. Fantastic Four (They’ll keep trying this one until they get it right.)
7. Night of the Creeps (One of my favorite horror movies of all time. Homage movie to all genres of horror. Fantastic one liners from the lead. Somebody’s going to get a hold of this.)
8. Super Mario Bros. (Such a misfire on the original movie. It could definitely benefit from the advancements in technology and be made into a somewhat respectable movie.)
9. Major League (The funniest sports movie of all time is definitely susceptible to a remake. Sports movies haven’t been remade all too often, you have the Longest Yard, and a TV movie of Brian’s Song off the top of my head. Good material here and any of the original actors could reprise their roles as coaches if they wanted to do a sequel instead of straight up remake. I mean Dennis Haysbert isn’t doing Allstate commercials anymore so he’s free.)
10. Legend (Since Tom Cruise seems to be going back to Top Gun, why not remake this almost forgotten about, but darn good movie?)

So there you have it. What else do you guys got? We can bump this thread in October 2022 and see who was right.

As for Flatliners, I can't imagine anyone playing the role better than Kiefer Sutherland

But I'm still looking forward to seeing it

There's talk of trying to make something good out of Flash Gordon.

Given the popularity of game of thrones, I'd be interested in a retelling of Excalibur

So many good westerns that could be redone. The True Grit remake was great, how about we get Tommy Lee Jones to remake The Shootist or find someone to step into Clint Eastwoods boots to remake Pale Rider.

Lots of old war flicks could be remade.

Patton
Bridge On the River Kwai
The Great Escape
Stalag 17
Where Eagles Dare
Catch-22
Midway
Sons of Liberty
The Patriot
Gettysburg

Lots of good ones to choose from.

It's one of those that would be really difficult to make into a great movie.

Yossarian would be a tough cast.

I think Robin Williams would have been perfect for that part. Too bad he's dead. Maybe Simon Pegg?

I kind of like Pegg, it might be tough for him to pull off Armenian though (which is important to the fatalism I speak of below)

The role is a strange mix of intellectual and slapstick smartass and an even stranger mix of optimism and fatalism

I thought Arkin did a pretty good job. I also think Alan Alda would have done a good job too.

I'd like to see a new movie made. Not a remake. Not a lazy sequel. A fresh, new idea.

Having lived in Khanchanaburi and having rode a train across "the bridge", I would love to see a movie about the true story of The Bridge on the River Kwai. The original is mostly fiction. If anyone is ever in Thailand the first week of December they do a reenactment of the allies bombing the bridge. It's quite a show, especially if you watch it while having dinner outside at one of the floating restaurants next to the bridge.

I know it was a TV show, but I would also love to see a movie about Pappy Boyington and the Black Sheep Squadron.

Yes there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run, there's still time to change the road you're on

I always thought Dreamscape was ripe for a remake. The idea for the movie was great but the execution a bit lacking. With modern special effects they could make something batshit awesome out of it.

48 Hours, Tango And Cash, Red Heat, and any other 80s buddy cop movie you can think of. The awful "Hitman's Bodyguard" proved there's a market for those movies, and they're cheap and easy to make.

One of my very favorite movies. And despite the goofy tech and millennium plotline, it still holds up.

I've got a good one - The Running Man. As you may remember, I love that movie, but it's extremely dated and disjointed. It leaves a lot on the table. A more streamlined version (more stalkers, more time in the arena, less nonsense about the resistance) set against the backdrop of our reality-TV obsession...it could be really good.

Angela Bassett and Tom Sizemore held that movie together.

Otherwise it would have been a creepy ex boyfriend stalker movie.

Oh my gosh, such a great underrated movie!! It took place in 2017 !!!!

Did you know it was directed by Starsky (Paul Michael Glaser) and based on a book by Stephen King (I am sure you did , but someone here doesn't)

As much as I despise remakes and reboots , I think this is solid

New Cast Suggestions
Ryan Secrest - Commentator (played by RIchard Dawson)
Dwayne Johnson - Ben Richards (played by Schwarzenegger)

It was remade.

It's called "The Condemned" it came out in 2007 and stars Steve Austin. Instead of stalkers, they have to kill each other while an online audience bets on who is going to win. Kind of a cross between Running Man and Hunger Games.

For a B movie, it's actually pretty good. Here's the Trailer and a clip.

See I thought that was a remake of No Escape with Ray Liotta.
