I don't get the whole shoe thing. If I'm wearing Jordans, I'm not Mike. If I'm wearing big ballers, it's still just a shoe.....

Agreed..

I buy shoes (sneakers specifically) based on how they feel and if they look kinda good.. regardless of brand..

Now, that being said I don't walk around in Walmart brand kicks...but of the sneakers I have now, I have a pair of both Nike and Reebok basketball shoes and a pair of Saucony trail running shoes..

None cost me more than $60..

I agree one that, there won't be a market for $500 basketball shoes when you can get Lebrons, Currys, etc for less than half that. I was just talking in more general terms of the BBB brands success/failure being directly tied to the performance of the these kids. They MUST be GREAT NBA players for LaVar's plan to work imo. Anything short of that and he'll look (more) like a fool for not signing w/ Nike/Adidas/UA.

My husband paid $7 for a pair of Starburys at Steve and Barry's ten years ago that have held up through probably 1,000 pickup games.

Celtics have the #1 overall pick in the upcoming NBA draft...

According to Danny Ainge on our show this morning, Lonzo Ball informed the Celtics that he will not be working out for them.

It would amusing to be honest.

I would love to see him play in for the Lakers for the same reason tbh. I'm imagining Lavar with the platform the Lakers provide....soooooo many hurt feeling on the horizon lol.

Also I'd like to see Lonzo & Lavar successfully challenge the way shoe deals are done. Lonzo needs both great talent and the right market to do that. There is no better NBA market than LA.

I'm not going to hate on his business pursuits. I just don't like his antics. He's not the talent in the family, yet puts himself out in front of his kids. He says crazy things like he would beat Jordan in his prime or his son Lonzo is better than Steph Curry. Tough to take him serious.

I disagree on needing the right market to play in, but agree it will take Lonzo being a great player for the brand to work without backing from a major partner like Nike, UA, etc. Look at Lebron in Cleveland or KD when he was in OKC, if you're a great player in the NBA you get exposure because the attention will gravitate to you. Would Lebron's brand be bigger if he was in LA or NYC? Perhaps... Tough to say it would be bigger than it is already when he's played most of his career in Cleveland.

Lebron is in the GOAT conversation and the most hyped player to ever come into the NBA so he is not a fair comparison. Market matters. Take Chris Paul for instance. He was the premiere PG in the league for years, but Cliff Paul didn't exist until Chris moved to L.A.

Btw no one would care about Lonzo if Lavar never spoke up. Lonzo is too quiet to draw attention, but his Dad has him as the most talked about prospect this year even though he isn't the best prospect.

That's fair. OBJ in NY is another example. I just think if this strategy is going to work for BBB than Lonzo is going to have to be an MVP type of player. Just being good, or even an All-Star won't be enough when you're trying to change the game of shoe branding/marketing imo.

omg that would be the single funniest thing that's happened in the NBA in ages. That or if the Celtics took him anyway and we can witness a basketball version of Eric Lindros minus the perceived generational talent. Dammit Dread I wanna see LaVar's jimmies get rustled. The only thing better would be if the Lakers made some snarky tweet like "If you can't be the #2 pick then you CAN'T be an LA LAKER #sorrynotsorry" after passing up on him.

Is it just me getting old and not being able to remember **** or didn't that Fox kid from UK torch him in the NCAA matchup?? I don't see anything close to a "generational talent" there, I see a talented kid who can't possibly live up to what his father has built him up to be....

But hey, I'm just an old fart who doesn't watch any NBA anyway....

He's underdeveloped as a scorer(which a lot of these PG are), but he has has great size, great ball handling, great passer/vision, and has the traits to be a decent defender.

Fox is behind Ball as a shooter, passer/floor general, but he's stupid fast and plays great defense.

Ball is a really really good prospect, his Dad just diminishes him in some people's eyes.

I'd say it goes:

Fultz
Ball
Tatum
Jackson
(slight gap)
Fox
Isaac(a lot of people would put him above Fox)

If they were to not take Ball, they should look to Jackson and let Russell stay at point.

edit: Sorry to derail this from the OP, Lavar Ball is annoying...carry on.

The "generational talent" referred to Eric Lindros, a hockey player who was so hype as junior player (think of it being a hockey equivalent of college sports but for 16 to 20 year olds) the press called him "The Next One" because he was so physically dominant. But he had overly involved parents like Lonzo does. Mommy and daddy made it clear their son would not play for Quebec Nordiques if they took him with 1st overall pick in the NHL draft like how LaVar says Lonzo will not play for the Celtics. Their little superstar was not about to have to learn French nor was he gonna get hype playing in the smallest market in the NHL. Sure enough it went down like Bo Jackson for the Bucs because the Nordiques hoped Lindros would change his mind if they still took him with the 1st overall pick. He was traded a year later after never having even put on the jersey on draft day. Funny enough mommy and daddy pulled the exact same **** a few years earlier when Lindros was like 16 and he was taken by a junior team they didn't want him to go to.

It's a toxic situation all the same.

Isaac couldn't hit the water if he jumped out of a boat...he's althletic and a decent defender..that's about it..

Ball has one of the funkiest shooting motions I've ever seen, it's no wonder he is underdeveloped as a scorer..and he is NO PG..point forward? Probably..PG, hell no..

And his Dad is an ass..

Isaac has a ton of upside because of his athleticism, I've seen people put him above Jackson because of potential. In the NBA outside the first few "locks" there's a lot of "potential" that gets drafted. I wouldn't want him. I like Jackson a lot and I have him behind Ball as the third best player.

Ball is absolutely a PG and I don't know why you would say otherwise, that is what he will play in the NBA. If you think simply because he's 6'6" he's not a PG, I don't know what to say to you. He needs the ball in his hands to be effective, he's a floor general and a wonderfully gifted passer. He's by every definition a PG.

If his shot falls, his shooting motion is irrelevant. It's not like Shawn Marion had a great motion. He's a better shooter than Fox right now, but most of these kids who leave after 1 year are "underdeveloped" shooters.

Ball is at worst the 4th best player in the draft if you are factoring in his father, but a rough argument can be made he's the best, as Fultz has some questions. Most agree he's the second best prospect.

At the end of the day I think fans care more about Lavar than NBA teams do. It's like domestic violence or drugs to a lesser extent. Ball is super talented, he'll go in the top 4.

To answer you and USC..

He can definitely be a playmaker, but I think he'd be deadly as such on the wing..

Defensively the top tier PGs will eat his lunch..he's not quick/fast enough to stay with them...and if you want to switch your D to have him play offball, you've now taken an even less (probably) effective on all defender and made them chase the opposing PG..

Put Ball at small forward and let him create and dish off of pick/roll, curl action etc..likewise, his ball skills would bbe even more impressive going against a 2 or 3...

IMO, he's the PERFECT point forward option (LBJ being the all time best)..

With all due respect that sounds ridiculous. You don't take a 6'6 point guard with great floor vision/passing skills and turn him into an undersized forward.

Think about what you're saying. You think smaller PGs will destroy him, but you think he will hold up guarding the Lebron's, Paul George's, KD's & Kawhi Leonard's??? He will get absolutely destroyed. He is a 6'6 floor general. Leave it at that.
