Puts the holiday in perspective.

I've read the stories. This morning, I read a story about the heroic effort by the pilot of that C-2 that he was able to set it down in a way that 8 lives were saved. Reminiscent of Scully's water landing on the Hudson. All 3 of the sailors lost had ties to Florida. 2 of the 3 were native Floridians, the other was a native of Louisianna.

Lawrence Brennan, a former US Navy captain, told Business Insider, "Greyhounds are not equipped with ejection seats or parachutes."

The air crew's only choice was to land at sea.

"This must have been particularly challenging after one engine failed, reportedly on approach to the carrier," Brennan said.

"The Greyhound was landed in the open ocean so that it remained afloat for a sufficient time to allow the majority of the people on board to escape," said Brennan. "The sacrifice, skill, and professionalism that he and his aircrew demonstrated should be considered for recognition by the award of a Distinguished Flying Cross."

I worked on; and flew in, C2s for a decade.

I’ve been onboard when the pilots have had to single engine for various reasons. It makes for a bumpier ride; but that’s about it.

Dual engine failure is most likely due to maintenance malpractice. I’m sure the AD’s that worked on her last are tearing themselves apart trying to understand what happened.

We loved seeing them fly in when I was on my boat. It meant, mail! Sad to see this happen. Normally a very reliable airplane.

Well after some careful consideration and soul searching, I talked the to administration this morning over a work breakfast and said thank you but it just isn't the right time for me to change roles. At this time in my life, the thing I value most is my flexibility to spend as much time as possible with my daughter...I figure I only have a couple more years where I am still her go to friend to play with. Every decision I have made since I left industry at 28 was to give me as much flexibility for family time as I could possibly get. I don't want to back down on this conviction now. I do hope that in 5 years time the opportunity comes up again, but even if it doesn't, I don't think this will be a decision I ever regret.

Thanks again to all you losers for helping me ask myself the right questions :)

Z

It was your decision to make, and for the reasons you explained and turned it down ... good things will come .. no matter what.

You're a great dad, and that goes far much later in life than a position.

The university is blessed to have quality people like you. I truly hope the person who takes the position appreciates your decision!

zarni, I can't imagine you'll ever be sorry for choosing your daughter first. :-) I did the same and I've never been sorry for that decision.

I'm not an aficionado or anything, but my in-laws are into it. Junior Sisk ( and whatever band) sounds good to me.

More folk than Bluegrass, but I recommend Woody Guthrie.

No my little one found this blue grass hip hop band and I want to show her what real bluegrass is....but in fairness, what she found is pretty cool (it’s the band that did the Justified theme song...she looked them up after she saw me watching the show)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I’ll check them out. The closest I had in my iTunes was Charlie Daniels...lol

For fun you should check out "pickin on nickelback" bluegrass versions of their songs. Other famous bands are in the repertoire as well.

Chris Stapleton is genuinely one of the best musicians out there. Amazing songwriter and a helluva voice. His music ranges from bluegrass and southern rock, to blues and (outlaw) country.

"Thunderstruck" by Steve'n Seagulls is a fun listen too in the same vein....

My lil nephew (4) freakin loves it...his Dad/my bro in law casually plays in a bluegrass band out here in Wheeling WV area..

I'm not a Bluegrass fan, per se, but I do like some of it. Probably because I grew up hearing it played in my house. If I do listen to it, I prefer live Bluegrass to recorded. Regardless, I'd recommend downloading the, "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou," soundtrack. Lots of good Bluegrass on that soundtrack. That way she can hear some variety.

Yup - Oh Brother soundtrack is fantastic

The vocalist to "Man of Constant Sorrow" is Dan Tyminski - phenomenal voice. If you like that, check out Allison Krauss and Union Station, he's there as well.
One of my favorites:

A little more recent/mainstream, you should maybe check out Old Crow Medicine Show. They're the ones who originally wrote "Wagon Wheel". They've got more of the twangy/greasy/wily sound than Darius

And then if you're also interested, a while back I saw this little documentary that followed Old Crow, Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros, and Mumford and Sons while they traveled across the southern US via train, playing shows along the way and making up songs. Amazing musicians all the way around. A little corny at some times, but these guys are the real deal for sure. A fun watch with great music

Documentary is called Big Easy Express

That's all I can think of off the top of my head... agree about Stapleton too

Edit: Oh hey, that entire documentary is on youtube!

I forgot about Mumford as well. My first introduction to his music was, believe it or not, via an indy rock station on Sirius.

Thanks buddy. I’ll get by. It just really, really sucks to lose four from my community, two of which I had the genuine pleasure to work alongside. LT Combs was a goofball; but he could fly like he was born to do it. Jack was a great dude. Selfless, hard working... terrible jokes that you couldn’t help but laugh at. Quick learner too. I qualified him on a half dozen PQS in like.. a week. He would have made Chief easily.
