Love the Maduro, but that’s not really a pizza beer.

From the website:

Traditional throughout Latin America, the guayabera shirt combines style, functionality, form and tradition in it’s four-pocketed design. We at Cigar City feel the same reverence and appreciation for the guayabera that we do for the Citra hop varietal, an ingredient that imparts notes of tangerine, lime and berries to this traditional American Pale Ale. The exclusive use of Citra hops in this beer creates a flavor that’s at once unique and recognizable, while it’s dry, crisp character and moderate alcohol make it as refreshing and functional as a crisp linen guayabera.

I’m not traditionally an APA guy, but I bought this on a whim and wound up wishing I’d bought more. Probably would go great with some grilled tuna steaks.

Got a combo going. Smithwicks, Coppertail's Septima (saison), and Rollin Dirty by Brew Bus (red ale).

I've developed some kind of hop allergy in the last few years. Hoppy beers give me terrible acid reflux and indigestion to the point of getting sick. I can still drink pale ales and dry hopped beers. But I haven't been able to drink an IPA without feeling like **** in years.

OK. I'm going to help you.

GO find this:

It's ~125 proof. And you can really taste coconut in it.

Then find yourself some coconut water. Even the flavored kind. Make yourself a mixed drink with the overproof rum and the coconut water. Gets you drunk, gives you the coconut flavor you love, and removes the stigma of drinking like you're on your way to prom.

Frankly I'd never sip on a coconut rum. But that's just my taste.

Never heard of the Morgan one but Parrot Bay isn't bad.

Be careful.

Most places make **** Old Fashioneds. Hopefully the one you got was on the bad scale and so you can be pleased. I've had maybe 7 or 8 that I've really been satisfied with, the rest of have terrible. The best I've ever had was actually on a Disney Cruise. It had brown sugar, bourbon soaked cherries, they used a table top smoker with cherry wood chips to put smoke in the glass before making the drink. The orange was also soaked in something beforehand...it was fantastic.

If you live in the Tampa area, I will have a recommendation for you at some point. Trying to recall the details of a drunken night over a year ago right now.

There's a bar in Sarasota. I ordered an Old Fashioned because I saw someone else get one. The bartender gets this little cutting board-type slab of wood, hits it with a torch and sets the glass on top, upside-down, so the smoke fills it. I also remember him putting a sugar cube on a napkin and pouring bitters over it. He also shaves off a fresh slice of orange rind. IIRC, he then puts the sugar in the glass and crushed it or something. Then they add the various liquids. And at some point a huge sphere of ice. Amazing presentation. I'm pretty hit-or-miss on alcohol so I didn't really care for the drink itself lol

*If any of these details sound weird or incorrect, this is a pretty fuzzy memory I'm recalling.

EDIT: It's actually Made in Italy Restaurant and Martini Bar in Venice, FL.

It's called "vaping" alcohol...and it's bullshit. Cool presentation...but LITERALLY ZERO effect on the drink. It's **** that people who call themselves "mixologists" do.

If I only knew a bartender who could help me out...

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that's something different. I think that's where you actually consume the alcohol through the vapor. What I'm talking about is just filling the glass with smoke right before putting the drink in it. I think it's cherry wood or something.

The rest of your post after the first sentence is probably true, and there's a similar thing in cooking, but it was a cool presentation for sure.

Perhaps.

We call it "vaping".

We also drop dry ice into **** for the effect.

There are all kinds of "smoke" that can be "vaped" into cocktails. Again...cool effect. As far as flavor profile goes? Minimal. At best. And it's usually on the first sip, which is ironic, considering the first sip gives you your heaviest "alcohol" hit. Thus, mitigating the "smell".

If you want a show and ****...hit up a bar that takes 10 minutes to make a drink. Hell...when my girl and I want to go out, dress up and act all "classy" and ****...we do them. I'll order a Clover Club or some other flip...watch the "mixologist" crack ice from a bigger block of ice, dry shake the sumbitch...and live it up. Y'all know I like to keep it classy...

As far as your Old Fashioned goes...there are many ways to make it. Depends on who you ask and who is making it.

At work, I make it like they want me to make it:

Muddle a marischino cherry and orange slice with .5 oz. of simple syrup.
1.25 oz Bourbon
1 dash bitters
Top with club soda

This is the "Old Fashioned" most people get. Pretty standard.

My Old Fashioned is the most "original" recipe I could find. I'm a bourbon lover so I like this one better.

Put a sugar cube in the glass. 4-6 dashes of (orange) bitters. Muddle.
1.5 oz. Bourbon

I do a thick slice of orange peel, torch it with a lighter and toss it in the drink.

No soda water. No cherry. Those are fairly recent additions to the drink. And I hate cherries. Unless I'm behind the bar and hungry.

Point is, if you order one in a bar, you're gonna get it the way they make it. If you like it a certain way...say something or you're at my mercy.
