Who are we taking with our first pick?

Postby real bucs fan » Mon Apr 23, 2018 12:08 pm

Lots of discussion, but let's put it down so we can see it definitively. Let's see how big a of a surprise our selection really is...

And to be extra clear, this is a question of who you think we will pick, not who we should pick. We can ask the later post draft...

If you want bonus points, specify if we trade down or up.

My guess is Denzel Ward.

I think my favorite option for the Bucs is trading back and drafting Marcus Davenport. There are going to be a lot of good players taken in the second and third rounds, so it would be nice to acquire additional picks while also getting a high ceiling guy at such an important position.

I fully expect the Bucs to take Barkley but only because I don't think Nelson or Chubb will be there. If they are there, they will take Chubb first, Nelson second.

In the order that I'm expecting, not that I want:

1. Nelson
2. Barkley
3. Chubb (only because I don't think he'll be there)
4. Ward
5. James
6. Fitz

Anyone else I'd be surprised with...

That's kind of how I see it. You have the big 3 at the top followed by the 3 DBs. I will be shocked if it's not one of those 6 guys.

I honestly think Chubbs will be there when we pick and we rightfully pass on him for Nelson.

Same.

I wouldn't be crazy about James, but I'd try to be optimistic.

I think it goes:
1) Browns: Darnold
2) Giants: Barkley
3) Jets: Mayfield
4) Bills (Browns trade pick to Bills): Allen
5) Broncos: Nelson
6) Colts: Chubb

7) Bucs: James

MY preference is:
First choice: Nelson
2nd: Chubb
3rd: Barkley
4th: James

other notes:
- Browns take Darnold because they finally do the smart thing, instead of falling for the "big arm guy"
- Giants take the guy they can envision wearing a gold jacket
- Jets take the guy that fits the team perfectly, who they traded up for all along
- Bills move up to take Allen because they are desperate for a drop back passer, and who they want to establish a new identity/era around
- Broncos are paying Keenum 18 mil a year. they want to keep him upright.
- Colts try to show everybody how committed they are to Andrew Luck by going defense and take the top defensive player

Nobody trades up for the 5th or 6th pick for a QB because everybody knows the Broncos (5th pick), Colts (6th), Bucs (7th), Bears (8th), 49ers (9th), Raiders (10th) aren't going QB this year and trading up to the 10th pick as opposed to the 5th is a hell of a lot cheaper. Raiders will probably field a couple calls for teams looking to jump up and snag Rosen before the Dolphins are on the clock

It came down to Nelson and Ward for me, and I went with Ward just because the Jensen signing leaves cornerback as far and away the worst group on the team, and one of the worst in the league. If Licht isn't angling for Ward, he's done a great job of putting us in a position to fool everyone.

James has big time upside and is plug and play at SS so I could even get behind him.

In order of likelihood, in my opinion:

1. Barkley
2. James
3. Nelson
4. Fitz
5. Ward

Only player I'd be happy with from that group is Nelson. I'd watch a few highlight packages of Barkley and quickly get excited about it. There's also something about Derwin James that, despite going against every belief I have in how teams should be built, would be fun. I will be a grumpy fan with the last two.

There is almost no chance Chubb is there when we pick unless the Bucs trade up.

Fitzpatrick.

On second thought, I genuinely see us drafting James. I don't know who personally I prefer, but I think the Bucs love them some Derwin.

Ultimately, I believe we stay at 7 and Chubb, Nelson, Barkley and 3 QB's are taken.

Leaving us with a Fitz/D, James/D. Ward situation.

I (personally) take D. Ward

I think they (Bucs F.O.) take D. James

Agreed. I would be sad that we didn't end up with Nelson, Chubb, or Barkley - but once I actually envision him in a Bucs jersey - I'm pretty hyped about the idea. Would certainly be fun to watch on D

A lot of folks seem to think that Fitz's best and most natural spot is primarily as the inside/nickel corner. Which also happens to be the only place VHIII hasn't looked like trash. This ultimately leads me to think it'll be Ward or James if it's a DB. Drafting Fitz is either shrugging and giving up on VHIII, or saying you're ready to trust him as a boundary corner again. I don't like either choice. By the same token, Evans is best at free safety, doing the same sorts of things Fitz would be doing if he were there. James is the more natural running mate.

For these reasons, I don't really think it'll be Fitzpatrick.

Honestly, in my mock I had the Bucs passing on Nelson for Chubbs. I like Chubbs (not nearly as much) as the next guy, but that would really upset me.

Nelson at 7.

3 QBs go top 6, Barkley, Chubb, plus a (relatively speaking) surprise guy

If we had the first pick in the draft (and didn't trade it, obviously), I'd take Chubb every day of the week. If he's there at #7 and we don't take him. I'm going to go Bobby Knight on my living room.

VH3 will need to make his bones like everyone else on the roster. I'm not going to pass on drafting an elite players because it may derail ****ing VH3 spot on this team. Yeah, he doesn't carry that much weight when it comes to making these choices.

Also, I haven't given up on VH3 on the outside yet either. All our CBs struggled last year. VH3 is more quick than fast, and gives up too much cushion to not get burned deep after our DL give the QB 6 seconds to throw. A lot of VH3 problems will be minimized with a better DL. He's not a cover corner, he's a quick twitch playmaker who makes you pay for off balanced or rushed passes- of which we've forced very few.

Fitz on the outside is fine as well. Or as a SS, where both he and Evans have played, and Mike Smith has said repeated that in his scheme the two are interchangeable. This argument for James over Fitz because it makes filling out the depth chart simpler is moronic.

I've cooled on Ward - tape tells me he's VH3 2.0

Fitz is there but, I'd rather take a true playmaker/safety in James, than a safety-who-we-think-we-can-convert-to-CB in Fitz

I think it will be Fitzpatrick.

My preference is Chubb, Barkley, Nelson in that order and if they're all gone because only 3 QBs have gone I think we're in a great spot to trade down. Making a pick at all at 7 with the big 3 + 3 QBs gone is my worst case scenario.

If Fitz's best role was as a boundary corner, he'd be getting talked up as a boundary corner. Boundary corners are right behind quarterbacks, left tackles, and pass rushers when it comes to their value in the NFL. It's like saying, "Yeah, he could be an elite starter, but long reliever is just as important all the same." If he projected as a great boundary corner, this wouldn't be a discussion. VHIII looked solid at the nickel spot last year after looking like trash elsewhere. I don't think the coaches are going to be eager to move him back outside after the way he played there last year. Nor will Jason Licht be eager to make another declaration of failure by replacing him inside. And Evans and Fitzpatrick would play almost identical roles at safety. Because the two roles are interchangeable doesn't mean you want two guys with similar skill sets. Why do you think we signed TJ Ward last year? We wanted a thumper. That's much more James. Let me know if you're still confused, Dr. Mario.
