I'm torn on Vea. He's big and by all accounts he's going to blow up the combine. His UCLA and Washington state tape are dominant. Oregon was good. Stanford was meh. Hard to stop when he gets a head of steam, hard to get started if hands get on him quickly. I wouldn't mind him at 15-20, but I don't know about at 7. Thoughts on Vea?

He might be my 3rd favorite option for us in this draft (behind Chubb and Nelson). If we trade back and get him plus picks I wouldn't complain.

I'd have to take a DE before Vea. We can still add a lot of firepower to this defense.

It's not a reach if he won't be there next time. If he's the top DT in the draft you want and he's the best option for you at 7, then get him. If you have a better option for your football team at 7 then you get that guy.

I'm not picking on you here but it needs to be said again that IT DOES NOT MATTER IF MEL KIPER LIKES THE PICK OR NOT.

Nobody had Mahomes as a top 10 pick last year. He was a back of the first, top of the second guy behind Watson and Trubisky. Andy Reid didn't give a **** about that and took his guy over Watson with the 10th pick because he knew Mahomes wouldn't be there in the middle of the second. If he had waited because the universe hadn't decided whether or not he was a top 10 QB, he would be sitting there wondering if he should draft Davis Webb or KPass.

He got his guy and the Chiefs had a nice draft.

I think we could do worse than Vea, but we could do better. How anyone could have Vea over a certain RB after watching that matchup though... :?

Uhhhhh, why?

Outside of Barkely's big/long 92 yard TD run, WHICH WAS TO THE LEFT SIDE NOWHERE NEAR VEA his rushing stat line was 17 for 45..2.6/carry...

That's Doug Martin YPC just as an FYI..

I just can't sign off any any course of action that doesn't improve our blocking, edge rush, or coverage.

And yes...I full-well understand that Vea would indirectly help the edge rush and the coverage. I get that. But you can apply that logic to anything in football.

When one of those directions is picked the other two are getting gobbled up and the last one gets gobbled up twice.

What's Mel Kiper have to do with anything? He's an asshat and my opinion isn't formulated on anything he says.

I'm saying I can't get behind drafting a 'mediocre pass-rush' nose tackle at 7. I haven't done a ton of review on DaRon Payne, Taven Bryan or Maurice Hurst but I can't see where Vea would be such a large amount better than them where you'd be inclined to take him at 7.

Andrew Brown looked great all senior bowl week. As did Justin Jones and BJ Hill. Tim Settle will be a good pick in the mid rounds. Nathan Shepherd was unblockable at times before he broke his hand at the senior bowl. To me, this class is fairly deep at DT and Vea isn't a GMac/Suh type of DT that warrants the #7 pick.

Bingo.
I like Vea, but he's not either of those guys and honestly you can just put him in a hat with those other names and pick one out and I'd be just as pleased. I really like Payne and Bryan.

Settle is a beast. Would have possibly been a 1st round pick if he stayed another year. Downright dominant in some games.

This guy deserves more attention. Beast!!! He looks like a 1st round pick. 6'3" 335lb RS Sophmore with great athleticism for his size.

He'll be a guy whose draft stock rises in the media like Davenport did. Projected way too low right now.

Been watching him all night with the Bolts game in the background. I don't see the reason he's not legit option in rd 2 if he still there. 335lb kid that moves like him. He's a 3 down player at DT and a big body next to McCoy.

Didn't know about Settle. Watch a couple of games and some youtube highlights. Dontari Poe 2.0. He won't get out of the first I don't think. A guy that big isn't supposed to have those movement skills.

This kid is 20years old. I'm on the Tim Settle bandwagon! He's my pick 38th overall if he's there. Doubt he makes it though...

A few teams were able to run on Virginia Tech but overall they were a good run stuffing team especially with weaker teams. I would say Settle created opps for his teammates just because they were trying to avoid him. 2 down guy who could get some third down snaps, I'd be surprised if he could destroy NFL linemen on a constant level. But who knows. If the talent level he plays with gets much better he may also may become much better.

I sure wont say this isnt the guy that we need to play next to Gerald because he very well may be the guy that makes a quarterback wary of stepping up in the pocket and then the dancie feet allows someone else to get to the quarterback.

I'd say if Gholston suddenly gets 5 sacks this year - Settle/McCoy would be the reason. If our TFL's jumped up it also would be he was part of a greater team effort.
