I've heard and read that James should be a "culture changer". Anyone have any insight on this? Although safety might not be a value pick at 7, it could easily be worth it if he comes with the added bonus of elevating the play of the rest of the unit.

James is a monster that can play all over the defensive backfield. My only concern about him would be his knee holding up.

For the NFL, James fits as a strong safety who is a tough eighth defender in the box. Some team sources feel that James is not a good fit as a deep center fielder. They think he has some coverage limitations as a free safety, but should be able to play man against tight ends. They don't think he is a fit to play nickel corner and cover slot receivers. One area scout thought James could end up adding weight and grow into being a Will linebacker, similar to Mark Barron.

Tends to play through a straw in high safety role. Needs balanced eyes. Gets locked in on receiver routes and loses sight of quarterback's developing intentions. Slow reads lead to slow reactions. Waits a step too late to support over the top and can miss his window for help. Needs better anticipation in coverage. Can be too cautious in run support allowing runners to get up to him rather than taking it to them. Often absorbs contact flat-footed rather than initiating contact. Can improve pursuit angles. Despite his intensity, will still coast on some snaps. Has limited experience. Has played in just 26 college games. Has a torn ACL in his medical history.

1. Bradley Chubb, DE
2. Quenton Nelson, LG
3. Saquan Barkley, RB
4. Derrius Guice, RB
5. Minkah Fitzpatrick, CB
6. Arden Key, DE
7. Derwin James, S
8. Joshua Jackson, CB

My top 3 is the same, though I'd have Barkley over Nelson now. Heck I'd have Barkley over Chubb, but you just can't find edge rushers outside of the first. The LSU guys have fallen out, and so has has Jackson who needed to have big combine to fully earn that spot.

Right now I have, in alphabetical order since I haven't quite settled it:

Tier 1:
Barkley
Chubb
Nelson

Tier 2:
Davenport
Fitz
James
Nelson
Ward

Still working on identifying the 7th guy though I don't forsee that player being BPA regardless.

Right now I'm very much warming up to the idea of taking James at 7. He and Evans could be an elite pairing at safety for a decade.

Ward has emerged as that 7th guy. His combine was really eye opening. His tape is a bit inconsistant, and he looks tiny on film, he's clearly got skills, is longer than thought, and is an absolutely superb athlete. Nelson is in tier 2 now too. Unless the belief is that Sweezy is damaged goods, I don't think we can afford to take a guard at 7 right now so I think I'd opt for the highest defender.

Kyle Crabbs has Nathan Shepherd as the 21st ranking, the 2nd DT off the board.

I don’t think MJW can accept drafting a guard @ 7.

Chubb is #1 for me. It's the teams biggest need and he's the best prospect at the position in addition to being the most day 1 ready at DE.

But I think the Bucs will get a heck of a player at 7 regardless with all the QBs going early so I'm not going to be disappointed with whoever they pick even if it's James, Fitz, Vea, Landry, Davenport or Ward.

I do believe Nelson and Barkley are the two best prospects in this class in terms of how good they'll at at their position. But the Bucs need defense and I can see them passing.

So what I'd do and what I think will happen aren't the same. But here is my pecking order;

Chubb
Barkley/Nelson
James
Fitz
Ward
Landry
Davenport
Vea

I'd be satisfied with any of those guys in round 1. Lots of good players, we just need to pick one that doesn't bust and not worry about who wasn't picked.

I'm w/ Bootz to a degree on Derwin James and higher than most. He would be a better compliment to last years FS Justin Evans than Fitz would be imo. James is nice chess piece who won't be asked to play the deep middle very much since Justin Evans is more suited for that role. Derwin is guy that can do alot for a defense including pressure the QB.

I just think safety is becoming a devalued position in the NFL. Cover CBs and pass rushers is where the premium value is on defense when it comes to draft picks and high $ contracts for players who re-sign. So I'd imagine guys like Ward and Davenport will have increased value for a team like the Bucs.

No for real. I just watched some tape on Ward and he looks pretty legit. But, then I remembered thinking the same thing about VH3. Ward seems a little more aggressive, I guess.

Funny enough, arguably the biggest concern people had about VH3 when we drafted him was his lack of size. There was no concern about his play(Though some thought Tabor was the better Gators CB that year).

Chubb is a symphony of near-perfect pick for me. He's a potentially dominant talent. He's a culture-changer. And he plays our biggest position of need.

Ward I see as potentially one of the best cover-corners in the league, sooner rather than later. You could make a strong case that next to edge rusher, corner is our biggest need. Ward changes the entire complexion of the defense overnight. Grimes can cover the lesser boundary receiver, and VHIII can stay at nickel, where he belongs. Our corners are instantly a strength.

Vea doesn't play a position of great need, relatively speaking, but I think he's a rare talent. He could be one of the best run-stuffing interior linemen in the league AND account for 5-7 sacks a season. Guys fitting that description come around a handful of times a decade.

Everybody is bashing Davenport because it's cool not to fall in love with the hot prospect. In reality, he's one of the most physically gifted players in the draft and with coaching and patience, he's a guy who could easily be another JPP.

Fitzpatrick is a special talent. He'll do game-changing things. If Mike Smith can find the best ways to use him, he'll be a Pro Bowler. He gets dinged because nobody builds a defense around safeties, and at some point you have to address your needs.

Nelson is a great guard prospect, which to me is like saying you're eating the best vanilla ice cream you've ever had. Is he changing anything? Are you building anything around him? Well, no. He's just a really excellent guard. I'd be fine with drafting him. But I'd rather land one of those other guys first.

Taven Bryan is a man. He could be a potentially dominant three tech. He could blow up the running game as a base end and still make hay as a pass rusher. He's Justin Smith.
