Players we should be watching (2018)

Postby Mountaineer Buc » Wed Aug 23, 2017 5:26 pm

New for this season.

I don't know about any of you, but we can't get started fast enough. I'd like to start by asking which positions you guys are focusing on and what you are looking for.

My biggest focus is on left tackles. Looking for a big guy that can move in pass protection and win the first three seconds against top pass rushers.

With guards and centers I'm looking for guys who get their hips low and stand up defenders. I also want to see them drive guys off the line on running downs.

For corners, I want to see some press coverage even though we play a lot of zone. Thought being that if he can press, he can learn zone quickly. The other way around is tougher.

Running backs are always going to be a struggle for me. So many teams are looking for the next Barry Sanders while I'm looking for the next Earl Campbell. We swear up and down that this is a run first team, but I think that demands a power runner. Licht seems to value versatility though. Gonna be hard to stay objective.

What else?

Can never have enough quality linemen on either side of the ball, they make everyone else better than they normally would be....

I'm always a fan of adding talented guys regardless of position. And now that we have that annoying nonsense out of the way, let's get down to it.

I haven't yet honed in on any particular players. It is a long season, both in the college and pros, and talented players will inevitably show their mettle.

Positionally, I would focus on guys who will soon be replaced by father time. Grimes and Dot probably aren't going to be playing very much longer, so cornerbacks and right tackles are definitely on my radar. Possibly guard, depending on how ours shape up in the regular season. Maybe DT, because Gerald is going to be 30 next year. I always scout edge rushers. Mid-to-late round quarterbacks who don't violently suck are worth a tape viewing or two.

My answer will change as time goes by, as college players show us who they are and we see the deficiencies of our roster.

Some Big Ten guys I'll be watching in particular:

The Scarlet Knights (!) have a kid I really like...His name is Janarion Grant and he's small (5'10 172) and not much use from scrimmage, but he's a dynamite kick returner. I really wish we had him on this Bucs squad right now. He could transform our special teams. Watch him if you get the chance.

Another Scarlet Knight...Tariq Cole. He's a human mountain (6'6 365) but he plays left tackle for them. He could be an heir to Dotson here. He'll be easy to spot if you watch them play.

Sean Welch is a guard from Iowa and he's on the light side but he's a really good run blocker. You see him setting up all those big runs from that scatback of theirs. I'll be studying him in case Sweezy doesn't work out.

If we decide to move on from LVD in 2018, and/or if Kwon gets popped again, I'd love to see Josey Jewell, also from Iowa, get a look here. Love his game. He's always around the ball and he plays mean. If LVD left, we could move Kwon to the weakside and put Jewell in the middle and have the best young LB crew in the league for awhile.

I really like DT Steven Richardson from the Gophers. He's built a lot like Booger was - 6 foot, about 300 lbs. But man he's active. Makes a lot of run stops and can rush the passer too. McDonald is an UFA after this year and neither McCoy nor Baker are pups.

As for the Huskers...we're still sorting through the rubble of Bo Pellini's magical craptastic recruiting classes. The only guy really worth paying attention to is CB Chris Jones, and to do that you'd have to get HIPAA forms signed because he's rehabbing a knee injury. IMHO he's a second round talent if he checks out okay and goes through the postseason.

I didn't have Tariq Cole on my spreadsheet. He's draft eligible, so I'll add him but my guess is he's going to have to play his senior season since he's only got 11 games under his belt at OT right now.

Iowa is a nice little place to scoop up some talent this year. They're bringing back their entire O-line from last season and I have Welsh, The center James Daniels, and OT Ike Botteger. Jewell is a guy that caught my eye while I was eyeballing Desmond King last season. I even mocked him in the 4th or 5th last fall. He's got some nastiness in his game that needs to be focused, but he is a hitter without a doubt.

I have 5 DTs from the B1G and two of them are from Wisconsin (Badgers are so fun to watch) Olive Sagapolu is the big boy at 6'2 340 which has him about the size of Chris Baker.

I have 3 Huskers right now. Jones, WR De'Mornay-Pierson-El, and OT Nick Gates. Thoughts on those two?

Watching 12 games covering 117 prospects tomorrow.

Kent state/Clemson
Akron/Penn St.
Bowling Green/Mich St.
Maryland/Texas
NC State/South Carolina
Troy/Boise St
Charleston So./Miss St. (whopping 3 prospects here)
App. St./ Georgia
UTEP/Oklahoma
Temple/Notre Dame
UF/Michigan
FSU/Bama

Obviously no chance I can watch every minute of every game except for the nightcap, but we'll see how it goes. The standouts will be easy, it's the "meh" guys that'll be hard to judge.

Simmie Cobbs? Yeah, he's getting a lot of love early.

How'd he play? I watched the preseason game like a dummy instead.

That one drive where he caught the short fade TD was ridiculous. Everyone knew the last 3 or 4 passes were going to him. No one else even had to move. The Bucks still couldn't stop him.

Agreed..OSU held him in check at times with a safety over top..but as SOON as they went back to 1 high, he torched them..

He had enough athleticism for a big guy when OSU put their tallest Safety on him to jam him, he was still able to get a bit of searation.

Dude's gonna torch some of the 5'10 CBs in the Big 10.

Then they have that short white WR that can work underneath when teams focus too much on #1.

IU will put up lots of points in stretches, but if they can't run lots of games will end like yesterday's

Y'all are missing a helluva game if you aren't watching WVU and VT on abc right now.

24-24 in the 4th quarter.

Finishing up some stuff but preparing to tuck into UCLAA/Tex A&M.

My first chance to watch Josh Rosen play (other than highlights).

We've heard it all about this kid...and although A&M isn't Alabama...they aren't William and Mary either.

Dude can spin it, but needs to work on accuracy.

Reminds me of Josh Freeman that way.

Hokies held on with some great defense, but I'm left feeling excited about turning Grier loose on some soft big 12 defenses.

They played good. A bit more discipline would help.

That game was awesome, I was at BW3 in Dallas and the aTm fans were drinking the juice and being obnoxious.

I loved every second of the 4th quarter!!

Not Bucs related...but Josh Rosen is going to look good in Jets green next year. He's got flaws but he's a franchise quarterback.

Iowa/Iowa state on Saturday.

Iowa has most of their oline as prospects and linebacker Josey Jewel. the cyclones have WR prospect WR Alan Lazard (sp)

Penn state, Clemson, and Oklahoma all have big games. Georgia is at Notre dame and Oregon is playing Nebraska.

It'll be my first look at the buckeyes because I had the dumb and watched Bucs/skins.

Lazard is letting me down. He's got a touchdown, but he's also got a bad drop and is getting pushed off his go route by an underclassmen corner.
