Alright, Pick A Horse

Postby MJW » Sat May 27, 2017 2:16 am

Three Questions about the 2018 Quarterbacks:

1) Which one goes off the board first (probably as the #1 overall pick) ?
2) Which one do you think has the best NFL career?
3) Which one (of the prominent ones) don't you like?

Here are some of the players:

Sam Darnold, the USC phenom with the stupid Kerry Collins throwing motion.
Josh Rosen and his mustache and the Jay Cutlerish attitude.
Josh Allen, the Wyoming Cowboy with the huge arm and the iffy accuracy.
Lamar Jackson, the Heisman winner with the elite athleticism and a long way to go as a passer.
Deondre Francis, the Redshirt Sophomore who could probably use another year, but might not take it.
Luke Falk, the former top recruit who could follow in the footsteps of Pat Mahomes and beat the spread-stigma (though not in the Top Ten or anything.)
Nick Fitzgerald, who some like as a better pro prospect than Dak Prescott.
Mason Rudolph, who has the measurables and the stats but will need to be developed for a couple years before he can help a team.
Jarrett Stidham, who once looked like the next big thing at Baylor and will now get another chance to show why.
J.T. Barrett, though probably not.

Let's wake this forum up a bit, kids.

You forgot about Baker Mayfield.

Mixon,Perine, and Westbrook are gone so it's up to Mayfield to keep that offense going.

If he puts together another 3,900 yard sseason, he will be in the thick of the Heisman race and in contention for the top pick.

I'll pick a darkhorse. Trace McSorley outta Penn State. Really caught my eye when I was scouting Godwin predraft. I love his competitiveness, and he's got a big arm and great mobility. He's gonna miss Godwin obviously, and I doubt he'll have the hype to be a first rounder, but I think he's a guy who will greatly outplay his draft position and be a player in the NFL.

Mayfield is a great college QB, but a great NFL prospect he is not. I don't think MJW forgot him at all.

I don't watch college football anymore, because it's explotation.

I love picking horses though, so I'll go with Mason Rudolph based on your assessment.

On the first point, you're wrong. I didn't forget about him.

On the second point, you're correct. He's got a pretty good shot at the Heisman.

On the third point, I am sorry my friend, but he's a Day Three quarterback. Subpar size, inadequate arm. Aaron Murray would be a pretty good comparison. He was a 5th rounder and that was probably a little rich.

Is he that much worse than any of the other guys you listed?

I got to see Mayfield live last year vs A&M. Most years I would love him to QB my Buckeyes....dudes a fighter and a scrapper. But MJW is right, he's a late round pick (4+)

Anyone want to shift the discussion to cornerback? Running back, or defensive end?

I don't know about Sam Darnold.

Don't get me wrong, he has some great attributes to his game. He makes great decisions, has excellent pocket awareness, a strong arm, and has enough scrambling ability to keep plays alive.

But his footwork is non-existent to the point of embarrassment. It is why his accuracy is so scattershot. He throws off his back foot at an alarming rate, even in a clean pocket. He also has a tendency to stare down his primary read, and he gets happy feet if that first read isn't open. Flashbacks to Manziel for me there. You could also complain about his long delivery, but his release is fast so who really cares.

He's still young and has plenty of time to clean up the finer points of his game, assuming he is dedicated. He would benefit from a strong coaching staff, maybe sitting a year or two.

I don't see a consensus number one overall player. I see a player with good tools but some disturbing red flags.

Just my opinion, but there it is.

It's funny...reading this brings to mind Josh Rosen.

Not in the technical sense, however. I believe he's more advanced than "Johnny Football". Rosen reminds me Manziel in the "off-the-field" sense. There is something about his attitude and his big ****ing mouth. He strikes me as the type that has always been the big fish, in the small pond. And that once he get's into the League and gets his brains beat in...he's gonna fold like a cheap suit.

Maybe I'm wrong as hell...it's just my impression. I'm looking forward to seeing him play this year. Maybe he matures and shows the kind of leadership that impresses. Until then...

This could end up being wise. Tons of talent. Could be this year's meteor guy, who goes from little-known to top pick in four months. It's absolutely possible.

RB? I'll go the Homer route and take frosh phenom Cam Akers from FSU...

Losing Cook is one helluva blow..but folks are raving about what this kid has done over spring/summer...

Edit: my bad..hadn't reread MJWs initial post in awhile and thought it was more of a "who's going to have a monster year" thread..

Let the crotch kicking commence..
