I'd be willing to bet the same is even more true of every other position. Guys who are all time great candidates are usually guys with special attributes. However, the bulk of successful players aren't on a best 10 all time list. While I'd love to have the next Barry Sanders, I'd be more than happy with the next Micheal Turner.

I'm fine with holding off until after free agency.

To my recollection, we did a full 7 round mock last year prior to draft day.

I don’t think we’ve ever made it past 3 rounds.

Mike Gesicki is a great pick for a third rounder.

The year before, 4 of the top 10 were Day Three or Undrafted. Only 1 of the 10 was a first rounder. It's far from a myth.

It's also worth noting that unlike any other position, you can increase a running back's production simply by giving him chances. You put an average edge rusher on the field for 900 snaps, it's not going to make him a 15 sack guy. You give an average running back 300 carries, he'll almost certainly end up among the rushing leaders. Gee, I wonder how many backs get carries simply because their teams have invested high draft picks in them? ;)

Not sure if I'm being complimented or insulted, considering we're still in the 2nd :)

I was actually going to take him in 2 picks. I love that guy and the matchup nightmare he can be when he’s out wide

The goal isn't to have the leading rushers, though, it's to win the most games.

Oops, thought we were in the third. Well, we're on the third page. Half credit? :P

But yeah, I thought about taking him earlier. His athletic traits are intriguing. Best tight end at the combine in every drill, except the bench press, where he was second. He also hasn't dropped a pass in two years.

Anyways, solid pick.

Rather than edge rushers, let's compare the RBs to WRs and TE.

Top 10 WRs: 3 1st rounders, 3 Day 2 guys, 4 Day 3/Undrafted.

Top 10 TEs: 2 1st rounders, 5 Day 2 guys, 3 Day 3/Undrafted.

Again, this myth needs to die.

So does the myth that having a good running back fixes a bad O line.

1. Noones ever said that. And ironically many here have said the opposite.
2. Our oline isn't bad by any measure out there other than scapegoat

I'll be honest, as I'm doing the draft for the Browns and finding positions of need and then looking at the guy they have starting and seeing lots of 2016 draft, round 2....its really hard to avoid the idea of sunk costs. There are so many positions that need help that the Browns have heavily invested in. Their LB core (outside of Collins is a good example). They have two guys that put up decent numbers but will never be all-pro caliber guys. When do you say enough is enough and give up? Same with TE, DE and a few other positions.

Next year we should definitely do a post season mock (early Feb) and then a post FA mock just to spread them out a bit better.

That works.

I'd like to throw in the idea of a team lottery of some kind instead of first-come-first-serve. I have weird hours like a lot of people here, and it gets tiring getting stuck with the teams that either don't have great picks, or aren't really interesting.

How would you propose we go about doing a lottery?

My suggestion would be to let MJW choose 1st this time to accommodate her schedule conflicts. She’s been a good contributor and I like to be chivalrous now and then.

Wouldn't be hard. Start by simply asking who wants in. Once you have 16 participants, give each of them a letter. Put the 16 letters in a randomizer like this one: https://www.random.org/lists/

The person with the first letter gets the first pick, the person with the second letter gets the next pick, so on and so forth. You could even "snake" it, so the person who gets the last pick of teams the first time through, gets his first choice for the second teams.

Of course, I like Brazen's idea too!

It's not a Greek tragedy either way. It would just be a nice touch for those of us who are never online when the thread opens up. If I have to draft for the Chargers or the Ravens or whoever again, I'd survive.

I like MJWs idea now that I see how it would go. It would mix things up and make it a lot of fun. And it would challenge people to research different teams.
