Bootz2004 wrote:Cameron Brate played 24 snaps Sunday and he’s not hurt. That’s 4 more than Djax played but as we know he was bothered by injury all game long. What exactly is Brate’s role in this offense going to be? This was my issue when we were discussing whether or not he’d be extended. OJ had almost twice as many snaps at 43. Hump and Godwin also outsnapped hm with 46 & 44 respectively. He also didn’t do much in the PS. Hopefully it doesn’t turn into a trend but we all pretty much knew OJ would take over eventually and that moment has seem to come already. That’s a lot of money for a backup TE.

I was in the group saying it wasn't a great idea to invest so much into both OJ and Brate, but you know the answer to this. It has to do with what the defense is doing. The Saints leave their CBs on an island and the rest of the team plays closer up. Because of this we didn't get a whole lot underneath and running the ball, but since our WRs were able to beat their CBs it didn't matter. We torched them over the top again and again.

When we play teams that tend to more deep zone (cover 3, cover 4, T2- whatever) the underneath will open up and we will see a lot more of Brate.

All of that said, if we got offered a 2nd for Brate I would take it. Auclair and Cross are decent depth.

To bring clarity on the Marcus Williams pick up, when he becomes available for the field he will be the 2nd most accomplished CB on our team. He has 10 int's and 27 pd's for 4 years in a part time roll.

Whaaat. That sucks. He was playing the best football of his life. Might cost him his 5th year option.

Rookie corners really gonna be thrown to the wolves now....

No, I don't watch that crap. But I was in a restaurant and they had several sports channels on and every one of them was Rodgers, Rodgers, Rodgers. So tell me about this call... you've got me curious.

Per Rick Stroud, he's getting a 2nd opinion tomorrow from Dr. James Andrews in Alabama. Its never really good when an athlete has to see Dr Andrews.

Too bad, felt he was poised for a breakout season.

Yeah, a few minutes after I posted local reporters say hes getting a 2nd opinion before anything is finalized. But it doesn't sound good.

If anyone can get him right it’ll be Dr. Andrews.

Side note: How many doctors have better marketing than Dr. Andrews? This guy is the accepted go to expert In damn near all sports.

It doesn't. Dr Andrews will likely just confirm the initial diagnosis.

He was a pioneer in ligament repair, especially for athletes. He's not just a name.

Ok, someone sent me this link to the phone call:

Hilarious. The guy almost loses it completely by the end of the call. I loved it, tho.

Dr. Andrews is almost 80 years old and he's still kicking it as an ortho. The guy is a virtual legend in ligament repair. Nobody better **** on Dr. Andrews, the guy is terrific.

Sucks for VHIII. Also kind of answers the "5th Year Option" question we would faced in the offseason, unfortunately.

I doubt the diagnosis is in question, more likely it is to research treatment options. They are probably trying to figure out if they can get him back later in the year or just shut him down.

So with VH3 likely out atleast 8 weeks (if not the rest of the season) along with Grimes nursing a groin injury (status tbd, we'll get an update today) the Bucs CB depth looks like the following going into the Eagles game;

RCB - Ryan Smith
LCB - Carlton Davis
Nickel - MJ Stewart

Reserves - Javien Elliott, Marcus Williams

I'm pretty high on both Davis and Stewart, obviously it's not ideal they are forced into such prominent roles so early b/c of injury but if we can get Grimes back at LCB I'll feel alot more comfortable then with Ryan Smith as the other starting CB on the outside opposite Davis.

Another thing to consider if there is more attrition due to injury at CB is that Justin Evans played some Nickel this preseason for us due to injuries at CB, and with Rookie Jordan Whitehead in the mix I could see Evans moving into that nickel CB role when we are in that package/personnel group.

This would be a good week for our D line to find the pass rush. Help those kids on the back end out.

I think bringing in a veteran is a must, especially if Grimes is still out. Breeland will work.

We did. We signed Marcus Williams. He's been productive in the past and is just 27. I don't know if Breeland is 100% healthy. I remember he failed his physical with the Panthers during the FA period. It's probably why he's still a FA. We did bring him in for a workout but ultimately didn't sign him.
