They didn't draft a tight end, and there are four confirmed — Missouri TE Jason Reese, Western Michigan TE Donnie Ernsberger, Southern Miss TE Julian Allen, Southern Arkansas TE Tanner Hudson. Again, some of these might just be tryout contracts.

VICTORY!

Curious why these 4 guys(technically 5 with the LSU BBall player) would come here when our TE group is pretty set. They won't be getting much playing time even in preseason considering we already have 4 guys we really like. Maybe they can try to beat out Cross or Auclair but unlikely.

This guy tested grest physically at the combine. 4.44 40yd, 35.5” vert, 128.0” broad, seems to have been a very productive player at a high level of competition. His size doesn’t wow you but 5’11” 213 lbs. isn’t bad at all when taking into consideration his athletic ability. From what I read he’s a good football player who struggles in some aspects in coverage. He’s highly intelligent and couple with his athleticism his problems with coverage should be at least somewhat correctable.

I think this UDFA signing is something to be excited about. Feels like another mid-round pick.

So with all this greatness, why did he go undrafted? Not even a late round flier.

He had some bad tape in coverage but it's more mental than physical. Sometimes guys just need good coaching.

As well there seems to be a glut of safeties in the league right now, so I think his position caused him to fall too.

No kidding. He's been flashing at Northwestern for years. I am stoked we signed him. Between him and Whitehead, Conte's ass is grass.

Please let this happen.. I have no idea how he's stuck around after lovie was kicked to the curb.

We signed the QB outta Memphis, Riley Ferguson.. doubt he makes it on the team but the practice squad would be cool.. He was the QB at Butler High School here in Matthews NC where my kids went.

Yeah, and there are still several serviceable FA safeties on the market too. Just doesn't seem like much demand across the league right now.

He's great for that role. He's really accurate. Doesn't have a big arm though.

I would have been fine with Ferguson as early as the 5th. Tall, smart, accurate. I hate that we've made zero effort to groom a potential backup option under Licht (no, Ryan Griffin doesn't count.)

It does count. It’s an effort to groom a back up. That doesn’t mean it’s gone well. They obviously aren’t sold on him since they’ve brought Fitz back. But it’s still an effort.

We have a back up QB that is capable to step in if needed. I’d rather our coaches worry about getting our actual starters to win games before we worry about getting into the McCarthy style QB grooming game.

Eh. Semantics.

But I think not playing the "grooming the QB" game is a mistake. I would ALWAYS have a youngster in the pipeline. It's not just about having cheap in-house backups (though that's very important, too.) It's about rate of return. This is still a league where a good month of play from a promising backup can be flipped for a high pick. That's not true of any other position. It's a very good investment.

Bucs' UDFA Antonio Simmons - DE - Georgia Tech (6'3", 246 lbs) - Profile - could be an under-the-radar guy for a situational pass rusher

Overview
Workout warrior whose impressive combination of speed and power is sure to catch the attention of teams looking for a designated pass rusher with traits. Simmons lacks the overall length, bend, and handwork to fully capitalize on his testing numbers and he may need time on a practice squad to continue to improve his pass rush approach. Simmons doesn't play with the sand in his pants to hold the edge so he'll have to make the necessary strides as a rusher to have a chance to make a team down the road.

Strengths
Put in heavy workload this summer to improve hip flexion and overall athletic ability.
Eye-opening straight line speed with 4.51 forty at his pro day.
Momentum rusher with build-up speed to play through a tackle's edge vs
vertical sets.
Creates discomfort in the pocket even when he doesn't get there.
Takes half-man over squared up approach as rusher.
Excellent closing charge to the quarterback and on backside against the run.
Looks to swipe ball from quarterback's hand when he's run up past the rush arc.
Consistent thump and wrap tackler with good finishing percentage.
Adequate reactive athleticism to disengage and tackle running backs in his gaps.
Possesses kick coverage ability

Weaknesses
High-cut with thin calves and splayed feet that point outward.
Play strength at the point of attack doesn't measure up to his 30 lifts at pro day.
Consistently widened off spot and could struggle to set an edge against in-line, NFL tight ends.
Improved hip flexion but is still tighter than desired for edge-bending approach as rusher.
Instincts and production are below average against the run.
Lacking hand-skills to create advantages as run defender or pass rusher.
Struggles to play square against power across from him

Why doesn’t Ryan Griffin count as grooming a young QB?

Because if he did that would be one less thing for MJ to bitch about Licht doing wrong.

Poppycock. Hogwash. Untruths.

There was a ton of praise from One Buc and various reporters last offseason/OTAs/Preseason about Griffin’s development. Find a different horse to beat, this one is alive and well.
