real bucs fan wrote:Something a bit interesting to think about in regards to the expected Jones/Barber combo... generally speaking with these littler back/bigger back combos, the littler back is more the 3rd down guy while the bigger back is the horse on 1st and 2nd down. But funny enough for us, I think Jones is going to be the man on 1st and 2nd down, while Barber is the 3rd down guy. And it works. I mean part of the reason Jones wasn't a first rounder was because of how limited he is experience wise as a pass receiver for a smaller back... and while Barber is the bigger man, he's actually shown himself to be a tremendous receiver out of the backfield. Barber is pretty much the perfect complement to Jones- a guy who can move the pile in short yardage situations while also being the 3rd down receiver of the two. So ultimately I expect Jones to be more of the feature back, while Barber is more of the situational back who handles both 3rd down and short yardage duties.

Just a unique wrinkle in our backfield...

I think whether Barber or Jones is the starter is irrelevant. They'll likely split 20-25 carries week to week with the hot hand getting the majority share of the work. Sims will maintain as 3rd down back because of his pass catching and his great work as a pass protector. This is the backfield Dirk Koetter likes to work with. A mix of guys with unique skills sets he can utilize in various ways.

Yeah, the only thing Sims offers us is that 3rd down skillset (good receiver, good pass blocker etc)...

If we aren't gonna use him for that role, why bring him back at all?...

What sucks about it is his being in the game is a dead ****ing give away play call wise...

For the love of everything holy DK, stop splitting Sims out wide and calling that damn quick pop/smoke screen to him...ya dumbass

Jones as a runner reminds me of a bigger version of a young Charlie Garner.

To me he's a Jamal Charles clone, hopefully he stays healthy but can develop as a receiver like Charles did.

I haven't bought a jersey since they came out with these ugly new jerseys but I might just buy a throwback Jones JR jersey this year! I like this guy. The more I learn the more I think we made the right choice.

Heard those were all shipped to the Chicago area for no rhyme or reason.

I never realized he was a top 10 pick like three years before we signed him. He played so well for us, I still can't figure out why we didn't keep him. Add him to the list, I suppose.

Patrick McIrish wrote:When the big plus for your RB is break away speed you know its a horrible pick.

Undersized, soft, below average hands, going to be NFL fumble probe, and cant pick up the blitz.....

But gee Mr McIrish those 3 plays a year his speed ensures its a 90 yard TD rather than 1st and goal at the 2 yard line makes this a steal!!

I just pray we can get a QB with break away speed next!!

Sigh. We move on.

Not sure what a "NFL fumble probe" is exactly, but Jones had 1 lost fumble in 3 seasons at USC. He also runs hard for a 208lb RB so I don't know why you call him "soft" either.

The kid was the #1 RB in the nation coming out of Texas in HS and proceeded to set records at USC (which has a pretty awesome history of RBs).

I'll grant you he needs to prove himself as a blocker and pass receiver. But this is pretty talented kid who has a good head on his shoulders.

Can you imagine this kid having a Kareem Hunt rookie season with a breakout game against the Steelers on MNF?

That woul wildly exceed expectations.

He'll have a few. This guy will gain yards and really transform our run game. Maybe not Charles level or even Hunt, but at least a 1200-1300 yard rb. Which is a lot in todays NFL, I think last year Hunt won the title with the lowest rushing total ever no? Like 1320 or something yards.

Lowest since 1990, Barry Sanders had 1304. Maybe he gets that total from scrimmage but I doubt he gets it enough for 1200 yards rushing.

I'm with Bootz on this. He'll be popular in fantasy football and get respectable numbers, but it is pie in the sky to just hand him top 5 in the league, let alone a rushing title. Remember that he's going to be a committee back.

850-1,100 all purpose would have me quite pleased.

You really think the rushing title will be this low again? Next year we have a non suspended Elliot, David Johnson back, Gurley on that nasty Rams team, Barkley on the giants, Guice on the skins, Fournette second year in Jax. That's a whole lot of talent.

MB wasn't talking about the rushing title and neither am I. We're speaking about Jones. He's 2nd on the depth chart or 1a if you will. But unlike Elliott, Gurley, Johnson, Bell, Hunt, Shady, Fournette he's not the unquestioned bell cow on this team. The rushing totals should increase a lot this year with all of those back healthy and in the mix. But Ronald Jones won't be in that conversation.

I'm with MB. 850-1100 all purpose for Jones is a good season. Barber should match that or at least be close.

Thirded. I'll be thrilled if we can get something along the lines of 2,000 combined yards from scrimmage from Jones/Barber.
