Welcome Vinny Curry

Postby Nano » Sat Mar 17, 2018 3:54 pm

Source tells me Vinny Curry is heading to the Bucs on a three-year deal for up to $27 million with $11.5 million injury guarantee.

My reaction is the exact same as when we signed Ayers. Meh.

I'd gladly take Darby off the Eagles' hands. There's buzz he may be moved.

A mediocre player like Vinny Curry?? Not at all. I'd rather have stuck with Ayers. At least he had just 1 year left.

Im happy (till he shows me I shouldn't be) These new additions may be here to completely ball out, but yes, they could all pull a Baker and flop.

You are exactly right, but I know there is that chance that some of these guys could really bloom, and I hope that it happens next season. I don't want to go through a new GM/Coaching change quite so soon. (if ever again)

Buying plug and play players is never going to give the organization the stability this team needs to be successful. I hope every player we pick this year becomes a piece of the Buccaneer foundation.

I'm very happy with this signing. I don't think Curry has got the respect he's earned over the last few seasons. As I said right after the Eagles got Bennett:

Deja Entendu wrote:Curry had a very good year. Even though he didn't rack up sacks on the stat sheet, he did a great job pressuring the QB and was also stout against the run this year (a knock on him previously).

By no means would he be THE answer, but I think he'd be a solid addition to a line that was atrocious.

I will feel much much better about the pass rush with the addition of Curry, a healthy Spence (pretty please), and if we can add one of the to edge rushers in the draft.

Here's an excerpt I just read about him:

Curry spent six seasons with the Eagles after being drafted out of Marshall in the second round in 2012. He posted a career-high nine sacks in 2014, but might've had his best season with the Eagles during the Super Bowl-winning 2017 campaign.

According to Pro Football Focus , Curry had 47 total quarterback pressures on 333 pass rushing snaps. That is 13 fewer than defensive end Brandon Graham (60), who played on 102 more pass-rushing snaps.

Curry's pass-rushing productivity was one of the best in the NFL last season, as PFF had him as the 12th-best pass rusher overall in terms of production per pass-rushing snap. Graham came in at 10th and his average production per snap when he was sent after the quarterback was essentially even with Curry.

Curry's struggles against the run kept him off the field early in his career, but Curry was a major reason the Eagles were one of the best run defenses in the NFL last season. According to PFF, Curry was the third-best defensive end in the NFL last season against the run.

We're definitely focused on building a strong run defense. Makes sense since our divisional foes run games are becoming stronger. Don't forget we have Ingram, Kamara, McCaffrey, Freeman and Coleman to fight.

At the end of the day the point of every defense is to stop the run. You do that you make a team one dimensional, especially in 3rd and short.

Good for us for trying to fix the pass rush. Good for him for getting paid.

Now, to play devil's advocate; what does Vinny Curry do that Robert Ayers didn't? This last year was Curry's first year as a starter, in his sixth year in the league. He has only one season with more than four sacks, which was four years ago. He's almost 30, so presumably he's no longer at his athletic peak. Curry averages 3.6 sacks a year, slightly less than Ayer's average of 3.83 annually.

It's nice we seem dedicated to stop the run.. But whos getting the sacks? This is a lateral move.

It IS a literal move. Some might argue it's a lateral one, too :P

He's three years younger. That might have played a part

"One main obstacle between Vinny Curry and a restructure with #Eagles: playing time.

Curry wants to be somewhere he can rush the passer on third down. Didn’t have that opportunity last year and wasn’t gonna get it this year with #Eagles."

https://twitter.com/GeoffMosherNFL

"Curry led Eagles in combined QB pressures/hits and believes his low sack total is symptomatic of coming off the field on pass-rush downs.

He’s hopimg a change of scenery helps him get the opportunity he seeks."

So we’re hoping a 30 year old mediocre DE in his 7th season will finally put it together and get the opportunities he deserves. Love it.

I can see him being a 7 sack guy with more playing time. My hope is that he doesn't get more playing time because whoever we draft is gonna be killing it.

He played more snaps last season than he’s ever played. 55% of the Eagles snaps. And it amounted to 3 sacks. How much more playing time does he need?

Yeah but he didn't get a lot of PT on obvious passing downs. That's going to affect your sack totals. I in no way think we struck some hidden gold or anything. But I do think he can push those numbers up a little bit with more opportunities to rush the passer.

We go thru this every year with every single signing. This one will be no different.
