The Free Agency Thread

Postby Teitan » Mon Mar 12, 2018 7:04 am

Well, at noon today teams can start contacting and negotiating with players. Let’s hope we come out swinging for Norwell.

Not to be Debbie Downer but I'm better than 50/50 certain that Licht is gonna **** this one up too. I'm not excited. Not even a little

Unfortunately, I'm almost certain Norwell will be signed by the Giants.

Would REALLY love to see us sign Suh if the Dolphins cut him. And of course, I'd love for us to sign Johnson.

Norwell appears to be heading to NY per latest reports. I'm hoping we land a big dog DT (Star or Poe) and a big dog CB (Johnson or Butler).

Pugh would be a nice consolation prize if we miss out on Norwell.

There are actually quite a few nice interior OL out there. Apparently we are hot on the trail of Ryan Jensen, a center, which is interesting.

Definitely a bit of a gamble since he's a one year wonder, but apparently he was absolutely dominant last year for Baltimore.

A bit, but I still think a G/C is in the draft plans.

It's a great draft for interior olinemen, but if we throw big money at a FA OL, I don't think we take an OL early.

And a big dog DE (non existent) and a big dog safety to start with Evans. Really we can use a starter for every defensive group.

On offense, Lewis, Hyde or Mckinnon at RB.

The Oline is pretty intriguing. I would be shocked if Nelson didn’t fall to our pick in the draft. That said, Licht likes to have his pieces in place before the draft.

Signing Jenson or another quality C would put Marpet back at guard. I know a lot of people are down on Sweezy but do you now pass on Nelson in this situation?

Not closing any doors with the draft. Wait and see what happens.

We have 1 opening on the starting unit at OG/C depending on what we do with Marpet- unless the plan is to cut Sweezy. We also have great depth as we saw towards the end of last year when essentially out 2nd unit outplayed our first. You only dress 7/8 guys on Sundays. I just don't see it. Add 1 stud, either through FA or the draft, and move on to other needs.

More sensical than interesting...

Marpet struggled some at Center, we sucked at guard...

If we get a decent center we could move Marpet back to guard...

Assuming we draft Nelson, a Marpet, Jensen, Nelson interior OL would be freaking phenomenal...

Even if we didn't draft a guard, moving Marpet back there means we have 1 "weak link" opposed to the 2 we have currently...

Norwell
Mathieu
Suh
Hyde
Butler or Jonhson

Here's my ideal off season, signing these guys and concentrate in drafting DE on the first and a RB in the second.

Yup. Barber + any semi-talented back is enough, for now. Too many other needs to invest a 2nd on a back. We need to stop playing cute and fix. the. ****ing. lines.

Sweezy struggles early but really settled in. I wouldn't consider him a weak link. IMHO we have 1 weak link, and that's the LG on the starting unit. Every other position is in at least solid shape.

signing Suh would be better than signing a DE or drafting a DE IMO, because Suh + McCoy in the middle would turn Gholston into the guy we want him to be, and make Spence a 10 sack guy this year.

I'm starting to like this Jensen idea... move Marpet back to RG and draft Nelson at LG - lordy we'd be set.

DE's and RBs are best drafted. DEs due to their scarcity and RBs due to their shelf life. We are in great shape at LB, so that's not really a need on D. Safety could use an upgrade at 1 spot, but I wouldn't call it a desperate need.

I long for the day where we’re more excited about the draft than free agency. I think we’re closer to that day than most realize. The dependency on winning the service of players other teams developed properly is not a long term solution.

Agreed on that you have to get your quality DE in the draft. As for RB, there are some guys available that will make it so we dont have to burn a day 1 or day 2 pick.

Day 2 is the sweet spot for RBs. Day 3 RBs are lottery tickets just like with any other position. Look at McNichols last year. And I'd add that since RBs are rarely able to play special teams, drafting a guy who isn't a lock to be a part of your RB rotation is a waste of a pick since you have to cut the guy (like we did last year).

OK, let's move that RB pick to a third or fourth round, I want Penny, hopefully he's there at our 3rd round.

I think most are more excited about the draft than free agency. But they don’t happen at the same time, so right now FA has the excitement.
