Am I crazy or is this a late firing? Why wasn’t he fired shortly after our season ended? What’s changed since then?

Seconded.

We may not have many standards around here, but we are sticklers for formating.

With Hayes gone who else is out there to replace him? Who would you like to see as the new DL coach?

It's about ****ing time too. Our defensive line has been absolute dog ****. The fact that only McCoy is capable of doing anything shows there's as much of a coaching issue as there is a talent issue.

Even if you give him a pass for the aging Ayers, It's hard to argue with the fact that Gholston underachieved badly, Baker was a total bust, and Spence did nothing before getting hurt. If not for the fact he inherited a Hall Of Famer in McCoy, our defensive line might have been the least productive in recent memory. In fact, it might have been anyway.

Wasn't Hayes talked about as our next DC/DC replacement if Mike Smith jumped ship last year?

And I agree with most everyone else's sentiments that this seems like a damn late firing...

Jay Hayes was well regarded from his time in Cindy.

Oh well. Dline sucked so can't be worse without him.

I don't disagree (in regards to our DL sucking)...

But, he did do some good things at Cincy, that he wasn't able to replicate here...

Looks, to me, like a case of blaming the plumber after you give him Fisher Price tools to work with...

But I'm more down on our DL talent than most I think...

Hayes was not a good coach. Took too long to get rid of him.

Our dline talent isn't good but like MJW said, most of our talent that we do have was not performing up to even their talent level. Hell, even McCoy wasn't as good as most seasons. That shows a potential coaching issue

Timing does seem weird. Think we must have a coach in our sights.

Also keep in mind that when the defensive line has played well has been when they were given permission to stop stunting so much (per their own words). During last season’s run McCoy and the DL asked to play straight up and it worked. The fact players had to point this out and the fact that Hayes is known for stunts points to a coaching issue.

Whatever on this. Another scapegoat. Funny also when you consider many here pegged him as Mike Smith's replacement if he left for a head coaching job last season. Now he's out of a job and people hate Mike Smith.

I agree...

What I see in the tea leaves is One Buc hedging their bets...IF they can't add any "bigtime" difference makers to the pass rush (ie big FA's, top draft pick-chubb) they can put a new DL coach out front and center for us to look at and oooh and awww about...

Then they can roll out the same sorry ass DL claiming that they are talented enough to get it done, they just need the right coaching...

Strange to fire Hayes and not fire Spicer. Maybe promoting Spicer is the plan?
