I just don't understand why they didn't tag him for 2018. It would have saved them money this season, evaluate his talent over a full season, then make a decision on a huge deal.

I think they simply view Jimmy GQ as the man, and there's no point in turning this into a Cousins like situation. They are happy to lock him up to a record contract and be done with it.

Whether that's the correct call or not remains to be seen.

Tagging a player gives that player more leverage in future contract negotiations. I get your point and the Redskins went that route w/ Cousins b/c they weren't sold on him. But if the 49ers feel Jimmy G is the man, then get the deal done b/c it only gets more expensive the longer you wait.

If the Redskins would've just locked Cousins up 2 years ago at around $19/$20m per yr, they would likely only have one more season of guaranteed money left in that deal and would've saved a boatload compared to tagging him b2b years like they did.

It's a risk either way I suppose. But he 49ers seem sold on JimmyG so I can't blame them for locking him up. It's basically a 3yr commitment w/ 2 team option years at the end.

Someone pointed this out on twitter, but the Packers essentially did the same thing with Aaron Rodgers. He'd been in the building for a few years, but he'd only been the starter for a few months when they gave him a mega-extension.

Also, in the next two years, we're going to see extensions/new contracts for Kirk Cousins, Jameis Winston, Carson Wentz, Jared Goff, Dak Prescott, Aaron Rodgers, Matt Ryan, Russell Wilson, and a few others.

If Jimmy G continues to play like he has been, he's going to seem to a deal sooner rather than later.

Kirk Cousins is what came to mind for me as well. No need in playing games when you think you have your guy. Plus, as pricey as this is now in a few years this will end up a bargain compared to the contracts QBs will continue to get going forward.

Yup, and to MJWs point, this could be equivalent to Aaron Rodgers bargain of a deal in a few years.

Speaking of Aaron Rodgers, any news on that whole IR circumventing issue that could make him a FA? I'm sure Rodgers wouldn't mind being a FA again this offseason

Here are the details of his contract.

$48.7M guaranteed at signing (signing bonus + 2018 salary + $7.5M of 2019 salary)

Additional $9.7M of 2019 salary fully guarantees on 4/1/2019

$15.7M of 2020 salary fully guarantees on 4/1/2020

2018, 2019, & $15.7M of 2019 salary guaranteed for injury

Annual Per Game Active Bonus: $50,000 ($800,000)
Annual Workout Bonus: $600,000

His signing bonus is $7mil. He has a $28.8mil roster bonus due to him when the new league year starts. They could cut him after this season and still save $6.9mil on their cap although he'd be owed $13.1mil. Good deal.

That'll be tough. I read a book as a kid called My Teacher is an Alien, and there was a girl in the book by the name of Jill. She thought he name was dull and boring so she changed it to Jil!.

Oddly enough, I don't remember how the book ends, but I remember that.

This.

While the number seems astronomical (because it is) as the cap increases it will amount to roughly the same percentage of the cap as other star qbs.

Add in the fact the big Bill apparently wanted to drop Brady for Jimmy and it makes even more sense. Aside from limited starts, what else could you have hoped to see out of Jimmy before signing him long term?

Seems like every time a QB signs a "biggest" deal everyone is like "OMG!!! That is HUGE!! No way". And then two years later they're just like the eighth highest paid.

Gonna be the same thing with Evans.

That’s why we should just pay him.

Yep. I don't think he's in that "elite" top few guys, but that's really got nothing to do with the reality of the contract negotiations. he whole argument going on about it is ridiculous.

7 starts and 12 TDs though. This is ridiculous and I'm a Niners fan. It's like he got rewarded for his lack of exposure. He has just as good of a chance to wind up the next Blaine Gabbert as he does the next Tom Brady.

In hindsight those decisions have been questioned. But at the time they were all seen as great decisions. Especially Carr and Jimmy G after 5 starts. What would you propose the alternative be? Start over at QB? Roll with a so-so vet?
