The 49ers and QB Jimmy Garoppolo have agreed to a five-year, $137.5 million contract.

Stafford's extension was 5yrs - $135m

Watching Jimmy G play this year for the 49ers: I 100% believe he is worth every cent of that contract. The dude just has some intangibles that can not be coached. I had a friend (who unfortunately passed last year August) who was the biggest Patriot fan that I know (and I am talking he was a fan of the Patriots from the EARLY 70's).

Any way, I remember in 2016 he said to me that the Patriots should start Jimmy G. over Brady. He said that Jimmy G is better than Brady. I honestly thought he was loosing his mind. I said to him, "Rex, you gotta be crazy"! But he was adamant that his team would be better off moving forward with Jimmy instead of Brady.

So last year when I watched Jimmy G play for the 49ers, I honestly saw what Rex was talking about.

Anyway, there is always that chance that Jimmy will wet the bed, but I doubt it. If Jimmy turns out to be what I think he will be this contract is going to be a huge win for the 49ers!

If they didn't pay him, someone else probably would have and they'd be looking for a QB again

7 starts and 12 TDs though. This is ridiculous and I'm a Niners fan. It's like he got rewarded for his lack of exposure. He has just as good of a chance to wind up the next Blaine Gabbert as he does the next Tom Brady.

Exactly. He's basically getting paid and rewarded for being an unknown. 7 career starts. In 4 years.

Sadly, that's the position the 49ers put themselves in. He was in the final year of his contract, traded for midseason, and he did everything he possibly could to prove he was a franchise QB (win every game).

Sucks for the 9ers because they'll look like fools if he fails, but they would've looked like bigger fools letting him walk and he goes on to be successful elsewhere.

Always liked the 49ers, and of course John Lynch. I hope they evaluated correctly and made the right call.

If they believe, and they obviously do, that he is their QB of the future then this is what they had to do to guarantee it.... Only time will tell if he is that guy so how good or bad this deal,is is yet to be seen....

I'll try this here instead of the official NFL season thread...

A 49er fan friend of mine posted these stats form SF games last season. Granted, Garoppolo only started 5 of them, but I think it does give one a good idea why they were willing to chance such a contract on him.

YARDS PER GAME
Before Garoppolo: 321.7 (21st in NFL)
After Garoppolo: 410.0 (1st in NFL*)

NET PASSING PER GAME
Before Garoppolo: 221.8 (17th in NFL)
After Garoppolo: 297.0 (1st in NFL*)

THIRD DOWNS
Before Garoppolo: 34.1 percent (26th in NFL)
After Garoppolo: 50.0 percent (1st in NFL*)

COMPLETION PERCENTAGE
Before Garoppolo: 56.6 percent (31st in NFL)
After Garoppolo: 67.0 percent (3rd in NFL*)

SACKS ALLOWED
Before Garoppolo: 35 (tied for 6th most in NFL)
After Garoppolo: 8 (27th most in NFL*)

TIME OF POSSESSION
Before Garoppolo: 27:36 (31st in NFL)
After Garoppolo: 32:54 (1st in NFL*)

POINTS PER GAME
Before Garoppolo: 17.0 (28th in NFL)
After Garoppolo: 28.8 (2nd in NFL*)

he took over a banged up 1-10 team and led them to 5 straight wins. you bet your ass they think he's the QB of the future - between him and the talent they've acquired on that defense, things are looking bright for that franchise. rooting for jimmy G and our guy lynch

Wow. I wonder if Alex Smith rethinks his deal with the Redskins now. I mean, it's also a boss deal, but holy hell if this is what 5 wins gets you...

And this will either set the market or break it. If he goes on to have a terrible year he'll actually set a precedent for NOT paying QBs like that. I actually didn't mind the high number, if you think he's the one go for it. It's the high guarantee that's crazy.
It actually won't be long before this contract is seen as a bargain.

He’s getting paid like a franchise quarterback.

His percentage of the salary cap isn’t out of line for a franchise QB.

The following was copy/pasted from a thread on r/nfl about this same subject...

When Drew Brees signed his last long-term contract extension (before the fix-it extensions), he got $20MM/year under a cap of $120.6MM, or 16.6%.

When Matt Ryan signed his extension, it was $20.75MM/year against a $123MM cap, or 16.8%.

Rodgers was $22MM/year against that same $123MM cap, at 17.9%.

Jimmy is signing for $27.5MM against a $177MM cap, or 15.5%.

Their deals only look cheap now because that's how big contracts work. They rise in cost each year but decrease substantially in percentage of the cap.

EDIT: And yes, Winston will get a similar contract.

How does his “guarantee percentage” stack up with Brees and Ryan?

Edit: Looked it up

Jimmy G’s guaranteed money is 54% of the total contract.

Ryan’s guaranteed money: 40% of the total contract. Signing bonus: additional 27% of the contract.

Brees guaranteed money: 40% of total contract. Signing bonus: additional 37% of the contract.

Before JG, they were a contender for the #1 or #2 overall picks.

If they'd had an entire season of JG, they're possibly the NFC West Champions.

Whatever you need to pay to keep a guy who makes that kind of an impact, you pay it.

Nfc West champions? They have the Rams and Seahawks to deal with. A desperate franchise in desperate times needs desperate measures.

The guy is getting overpaid....

The guy is a stud. They didn't miss a beat when he was in New England replacing the GOAT in 2016. Then he went to San Fran and went 5-0 with a team that was 1-10 at that point. The 49ers are now set at QB for a decade on a contract that'll be a bargain in two years.

Definitely possible they could've won the West if he started the full season. They lost 4 out of their first 5 games by 3 points or less, and the blowout afterwards could've possibly been closer with better QB plan than Beathard gave them.

That said, if it turns out he isn't the guy, this will kill them.

You watch the guy, and it's almost impossible to think he won't succeed. His release is lightning quick and he makes good decisions. If the 49ers can surround him with some genuine weapons this offseason, he'll look like a bargain by Columbus day I think.
