XFL: Returning 2020

Postby Teitan » Thu Jan 25, 2018 4:19 pm

Vince McMahon announced that the XFL will be returning in 2020 and vows that the level of play will be higher this time.

Competition will only make the NFL better. It should be interesting.

Seems he's learned from his mistakes last time. The gimmicks amd storylines are best left to the WWE brand.

Yeah, just like the FXFL in 2014.
And the Stars Football league in 2011
And the United Football League in 2009
And the XFL in 2001.
And...

Pretty much.

The problem is that they can never acquire the talent. Where the talent is the viewers go and the money goes.

The USFL came closest to succeeding. But then they got stupid and tried to compete with the NFL for top players and pretty much bankrupted their league.

That's the only way to really compete. Maybe not the top players, but they need big names. They either need significant investors, sponsors, or operate at a loss to do so. Otherwise it's just them counting the days until it goes under.

I'll steal a few ideas I saw for the new XFL and share them here...

Run the league from when the NBA finals ends (mid June) thru the end of August. NFL and College start then...

Eliminate PATs, Go for 2 everytime.

Once you cross midfield, no punting allowed

If you are leading and you lose yardage with under 2 minutes left in the game the clock stops.

Draft college Freshman and Sophomores since the NFL requires players be 3 years removed from High School (although I'm torn here b/c I love CFB and don't want it diluted).

Find the big names where you can, gotta market the league.

Right. But still, it only takes one to do a half decent job. Also, talent pool seems to be a bit deeper than last time around. Could field decent teams.

I think this is their only hope. Act as a minor league for the NFL, but players will still leave for more money. I still think it would struggle in this facet, but it gives it a shot.

I don't recall off hand. But if I had to guess, I'd say NY...er...NJ in this case.

NYBF has a point, but this isn't 2001 and had the XFL not been so gimmicky back then it would've done better.

We'll see, if they learned from previous failures and capitalize on the gaps I could see an alternative pro football league having success b/c I believe there is a market for it. I think it's important to initially not try to go head to head with the NFL in terms of schedule.

Agreed. Drafting top college prospects as freshmen woulddraw viewers. Their player pool needs to be top freshman/sophomores and NFL has been a with name recognition and a little left in the tank.

8 teams to start

• 40 man rosters

• 10-game season beginning in January

• Two-hour game-time goal

• Any player with a criminal record precluded from playing

• Players won't receive forum to take personal stance on social issues on playing field

McMahon said being the only owner of all of the teams will allow him to do whatever he wants.

One of the reasons McMahon thinks he will be able to succeed 19 years after the league first failed is because, he said, television ratings no longer dictate success.

"To me the landscape has changed in so many different ways," McMahon said. "Just look at technology and companies like Facebook and Amazon bidding for sports rights. Even if ratings go down, there's no denying that live sports rights continue to be valuable and continue to deliver."

Don't start in January, let the NFL have it's time. Competing with the NFL or even CFB playoff is SUICIDE.

There are 5 months from March thru July to capitalize on the football void.

Both of these are gimmicky and unnecessary, especially the criminal record aspect. Focus on getting the best talent possible and worry about their criminal records later.

Based on the start date I’m not sure he knows how to succeed. You truly don’t go after the NFL in any way. Just give football starved fans in June something to watch and you’ll do ok.

This is solely to appeal to the "there are too many thugs in the NFL" fan base.

I know. That fan base isn’t large enough to keep them afloat. Also that fan base would likely watch anyway just to say “**** you” to the NFL.

XFL should be played in the spring time so we can get a year round of pro football and NFL teams can scout for players. They shouldn't go head to head with the NFL.
