I kinda bristled at this until I remembered that Sammy Watkins got $16 mil APY also. It makes Cooks seem like a bargain. I'm glad we locked up Evans. That deal is going to look better and better.

Aaron Donald is tricky because everyone knows he deserves to be the highest paid non-quarterback in NFL history.

If everyone knows it then it shouldn't be that tricky at all. I don't mind Cooks deal. But it's amazes me that Donald is waiting this long to get paid when like you said EVERYONE KNOWS HE DESERVES TO BE PAID HIGHLY.

It's difficult to negotiate when you don't have a precedent to work within. Obviously you can use benchmarks (like Von Miller's contract) but those can be difficult for both sides to agree upon as points of reference. What if the Rams want to use Fletcher Cox's (the highest paid DT) contract as the benchmark instead? ETC. This is also why Le'Veon Bell's contract has been so difficult to work out. Everyone agrees he should be the NFL's highest paid back - but by what margin? Obviously they're not agreeing. If he were a pretty good back, the conversation could focus on similar backs and their recent deals. You don't really have that option when you're setting the market.

But you just named 2 contracts which perfectly fit the narrative of setting the market. If you think he's should be the highest paid non-QB then start with Miller's deal. Cox really doesn't apply as Donald is now a 5 tech in the Rams defense. JJ Watt would be another possible starting point but Miller is where smart money would look.

The Rams don't have to agree to using Miller as the benchmark for Aaron Donald's contract. They play different positions and do different things. That's the issue. It'd be great for Donald if they're okay with it. But what if they say what you just said - "We're going to use JJ Watt's contract instead." Watt's contract is 6-100-51. Von Miller's contract is 6-114-42. Which set of numbers do they agree to work from? Or, conversely, what if they were going back to a 4-3 again this year and he was going to be a three tech again? Would we be talking about that Fletcher Cox contract? His deal was 6-102-63.

In the end, it'll get done. But figuring out how much to pay the highest paid player is tricky, like I said.

In that case wouldn't it make sense for Donald to get: 6-120-70!?

What if he wants 6-130-80? Where's the ceiling when you're the best? How is it determined? That's the trouble with setting a new standard.

Hence the reason starting with Von Miller is smart money. You're being a bit dramatic as well. Donald might be setting a new standard but he can't just simply name his price and be unreasonable. If he is the Rams won't pay him. No one will pay him and he won't play. But that isn't going to happen. New standards are set every year and Donald will be no different with his.

Hence why I didn't say it was impossible - just more complicated. The big difference between most new standards and this one is that this is ACTUALLY the best player at his position, not simply the latest top tier free agent. But I never said it wouldn't happen. Just that there's a lot more potential room between the last standard and what Donald's camp might want.

You're forcasts and over drama of the situation is a bit ridiculous. Again it won't be some earth shattering jump like the NBA had a couple offseasons ago. I'd say if not significantly more Miller it'll be in the ballpark.

The Athletic's Jeff Schultz reports the Falcons have informed Julio Jones he will not receive a new contract this year.

Jones skipped OTAs and minicamp to show displeasure with his contract, which makes him the league's eighth-highest-paid receiver behind Sammy Watkins, Jarvis Landry, and Davante Adams, among others. The Falcons told Jones they had "not budgeted" for Jones to receive a raise, and are hopeful he will report to training camp on time. Jones would put himself at risk of daily fines by skipping practices. LT Jake Matthews, FS Ricardo Allen, and DT Grady Jarrett are all considered higher-priority extension candidates; Julio is signed through 2020. The Falcons open training camp on July 27.

Per Rick Stroud
NFL distributed a record $8 billion in revenue sharing to teams in 2017 and the league had a record $14-billion in total revenue. Ratings fell 10 percent, mirroring dip for all TV shows. 6 of 7 most watched shows were NFL games. They're not worried.
