Glazer Family: Koetter to Return in 2018

Dirk Koetter will return as the Bucs head coach in 2018.

The Glazer family, which owns the team, informed Koetter Friday afternoon that he would not be fired despite a 4-11 record which includes a pair of five-game losing streaks.

Koetter is 13-18 in his two seasons as head coach but has been instrumental in the progress of third year quarterback Jameis Winston.

In coaching a third season, Koetter is getting an opportunity not afforded to to former Bucs Greg Schiano and Lovie Smith before him.

Among the reasons for sticking with Koetter includes the fact that Winston suffered a shoulder injury that forced him to miss three games and saw him struggle to play three others while hurt.

Over the past four weeks since returning from his injury, Winston leads the NFL in passer rating (114.5) and yards per attempt (9.25) while ranking third in completion percentage (72.0), fourth in yards (1,221 and tied for the fourth most touchdown passes with eight.

Can't be worse than this year. I guess they don't want to keep firing and rehiring which is understandable. He'll get one more chance. We may be awful again next year, but at least we'll be expecting it now.

Hope you have a productive offseason Koetter. It'd be cool if you could stick around, but you have alot to prove.

Don't think he is head coach material, but if he gives up play calling, that's a start.

I was hopeful Gruden 2.0 could be better than 1.0, but unlike many on this board, I wasn't gitty about it either.

One thing I'll give Dirk, the team hasn't quit on him down the stretch.

This tells me changes will be made elsewhere. Mike Smith might be gone or Koetter might be giving up play calling.

Like I posted yesterday we've been on coaching carousel every other year for what seems like a decade.

A third season for Koetter isn't crazy.

He needs to make a lot of changes, play calling and player management the biggest.

But ultimately, I think this is the right move. Kudos to the Glazers for actually sticking with someone after a sour year and not turning to a reactionary bullshit hire to excite the fan base again.

This. No way we are bringing back the same staff and Koetter remains the play caller. This also means Koetter has agreed to whatever changes the Glazers demanded.

My guess is Gruden told them no and at that point, they didn't have a "excite the fan base" move to make.

How many wins does he need next year in order to stay around until 2019? Or is it playoffs or bust?

8-8 does he get fired? 9-7? 10-6 (missing out on playoffs)? 9-7 (making playoffs)?

The way the team plays will matter as well. If we are 9-7, healthy, Winston regresses, we miss the playoffs and the team looks like 90% of this season has looked Koetter is gone.

If Winston looks like these last two games and we are 9-7 while looking like a prepared team then Koetter stays.

Is it weird that I have almost no faith in Koetter yet I'm glad we're not changing coaches yet again?

I think these past few games of Winston playing like the QB we all hope he can be really helped with this decision.

Whelp there ya go. Either way changes really... REALLY need to be made. This is Koetter's last chance and he needs to make good on it

that's kind of where I am, particularly with Gruden being the likely replacement. I was willing to keep a open mind that Gruden evolved the last 9 years, but I still prefer we go in another direction after Koetter.

Winston coming out and publicly backing his coach didn’t hurt.

best part about this, over at the Gruden cult site (aka Pewter Report) they already had a thread putting together Gruden's coaching staff.

Reminds me of The Office when Michael Scott thought he had the job at corporate in the bag and Dwight Schrute was already redesigning the regional managers office room.

Struggling to think of a head coach that went 9-7 (or had a winning record), then followed it up with a 4-11 season overseeing significant regression, and got a third year. I'm probably missing someone really obvious?!

I've no major issue with them giving him a third season to prove that this year was the anomaly rather than his first year. Admittedly I would have made a change but I can understand them deciding to be patient and hoping be can turn it around.

I’m glad we aren’t just firing coaches left and right but Koetter has zero excuses in 2018.

I'd feel better if I had any confidence in Koetter, obviously. Shoot, I'd feel better if Koetter had any confidence in himself. I just can't get behind this.

Just thought of one. Todd Bowles with the Jets. Winning season and missed the play offs, followed up with a losing season and regression, and got a third year and an extension.

I think Koetter gives up the play calling, tweaks his staff, and gets a good draft class and group of free agents perhaps he can turn things around.

Great call. I know it's been a long time since we've seen one but you guys really underestimate what a third year under the same HC can do. Dungy had a losing season first two out of three years. Dirk will have a better, more gelled OL, likely a new starter. He'll get a RB. OJ will be in his second year. DJax and a more mature Winston. Defense will get a pass rush. It's not that far away. We lost like the majority of our games by a single possession.

I see more positive reactions to this than what I expected. I think that has a lot to do with people wanting to see continuity with the team.

With the staff, I believe a change at defensive coordinator is the number one priority at this point, second would be play-calling duties. I think most people are in agreement with this.
