Nice getting a win without Winston & Evans. Ugly win but much needed.

Fitz showed why he is a backup. DL beat up on a bad OL. Lavonte looked great.

It’s great to see them give a damn in a game that seemed in hand.

Offense looked horrid and Pop Warner level predictable....what's new

Defense looked like last year's 2nd half

That was to be expected today without Winston or Evans.

What puzzled me was the use of Godwin...

Speed for days but he was used as a safety valve for Fitz today

You play to win the game. We did that. Our offense will have to be a little better next week, which they will. Some confidence can do wonders for our young team.

Offense is on Koetter. Every first down was a run, I could’ve defended against that from my couch

Exactly. This wasn't going to be a pretty win. You said it perfectly in your "2 wins in a row" thread. Make things simple, play to win. This was a team win all the way.

I love this board....

We have our backup QB in, down our star WR, with the lead, in a tough grinding game....

Nobody said anything about passing every time on first down, just not running every time on first down. Pay attention

Defense playing well in this game, got the lead, run out the clock... Why NOT run on first down?

When we weren't in the two-minute drill at the end of the first half, 21 of our 23 first down calls were runs, often into eight and nine-man boxes for minimal gain. They weren't clever or effective. We had less than 3 yards per carry on the game. This is 1.2 yards less than what is averaged against the Jets (4.2 yards per carry). To those who can't put two and two together, that's bad.

Anyways, back to the game. The two passes that Koetter called on first down were playactions. One was the interception thrown into double coverage behind the intended receiver; as Gannon said during the game, had Fitz led the receiver that was an easy untouched TD. The second was a 20 yard gain to Godwin.

And while the first down runs were obnoxious and foreshadowed and stupid, it was the lack of running at all other times that was the real kicker. You can make noises about being without our starting quarterback and best receiver and leaning on the run to support that, but if that were the case, the offense would be running on second and third down. They didn't. At all. When Koetter calls to run exclusively on first down and then turn around to go Shotgun Fury exclusively on second and third down, then that narrative falls apart. The facts do not support the presumption. We ran it nearly exclusively on first down, and did not run at all on second or third. Because Koetter tips his playcalling. And because he tips his playcalling, we got behind on down-and-distance.

Here are my facts. To wit: we had three rushing plays on second or third down until our touchdown drive midway through the fourth quarter. Let that sink in for a moment.

Two of them were on long down and distance (2nd and 14, 2nd and 16). Only one was a manageable down-and-distance call (2nd and 3).

And on the touchdown drive, when we got rolling? We called as many second and third down runs (three) as we did the entire rest of the game up to that point. Those runs gained 21, 8, and 4 yards respectively, an average of 11 yards per carry.

Do you know what that means? Let me spell it out for you, so it is clear. When Koetter broke his stupid-as-fuck only-run-on-first-down-unless-we-just-got-a-penalty tendency , his run game was nearly four times as effective. Even if you take away the Sims run, the average would be 6 yards per carry, still doubly effective as his stupid first down calls.

We didn't get a rushing first down until the 10:30 in the 4th quarter. The narrative that we ran the ball to protect our depleted offensive skill positions is not held up by the numbers.

Ya'll are full of ****.

But winning whitewashes everything, so you people won't care.

It was stupidly predictable offense. Had the Jets shown up to play, they could have made us pay for it. We had three points at halftime, and nine entering the fourth quarter. It was shitty offense.

A clear and cogent argument is wasted on those who have no desire (or ability?) to actually engage in critical thinking. I am betting I know the least about X’s and O’s on this board (yes I tee’ed that one up for the trolls [paging delt et al]) but I do know how to compare and contrast arguments and you sir, are clearly correct.
