He is eligible, since he has not accrued two seasons as yet.

A year later, and it's looking like the 2016 draft was incredibly shallow. We were lucky to fetch Hargreaves and Spence. Aguayo was a bust, but it's not like there are a bunch of good players who went after him that we could have had instead.

Literally anyone but a kicker could have at least contributed to depth.

Also, Vonn Bell, James Bradberry, and Kevin Byard were all very good as rookie defense backs and we needed a few of those (still do.) They all went in the following 5 picks. A couple picks after that, Maliek Collins and Yannick Ngakoue were drafted and are now building blocks for their defensive lines.

It is what it is, but there's no way to polish this turd. If you're going to show everyone how smart you are by taking a dump on conventional wisdom, you deserve all the crap you get when it goes wrong.

I wanted Vonn Bell at that spot. Count me in as one of those that was pissed we reached for Aguayo with that pick!...

...I'm still pissed! :banghead:

Now, having said that, Licht made up for a lot with the Howard pick! He's still in my good graces and has an infinitely long leash as far as I'm concerned.

What I fail to understand is how some people seem to be surprised by this. If the door hit Berto's ass on the way out then it would still be more accurate than he was.

Can't think of the last time a kicker was on the PS....

Despite how it ended I still firmly disagree with "anything but a kicker" would have been better. If he had been say Dan Bailey, I maintain that is a perfectly fine use of a second round pick. Instead, we have a historically bad bust. Wonder what the list for one year and cut is for players picked in the second round....

Highly doubt that.

There's no way they waste a practice squad spot on a kicker

True, but not only that. Two points here that are worth noting.

First, NFL teams start building their practice squads after training camp is done, hopefully storing the guys who just barely didn't make the 53. We are not at the point in the NFL calendar where practice squads are made. Had we wanted him on the practice squads, we would have held onto him throughout training camp, cut him on the final day, and signed him to the PS after he cleared waivers. Since we did not, it is easy to surmise that was not our plan.

The second point is the more important one. As I've said, your presence squads are where you put the young guys you really like who just barely missed your 53, guys who know your system, guys who will step in if a position gets too many injuries or your special teams need a tweak. Practice squads are where you put your players who are shades of gray, who have their flaws but definitely their strong suits, guys who can contribute to the team.

Special teams specialists -- kickers, punters, and long snappers -- are not gray positions. Either you are the guy, or you are not. Either you can make the kicks, or you cannot. Either your snaps are good, or they are not. Teams do not waste practice squads spots on these guys, because if you are not satisfied with your current specialists, you cut them and sign guys who you think can do those jobs. No one is hiding long snappers, punters, or kickers on their practice squads, because no one is that dumb.

Aguayo is gone. The pick is burned, and so is he.

The person most responsible for the pick is Kyle Brindza.

He was so bad the year prior that they wanted to permanantly solve the problem. Unfortunately Aguayo was worse.

Are you serious? What makes you think they aren't just looking for an accurate kicker? If we sign him for less does that make him more accurate?

My only thought about it was along the line of them trying to save face so to speak, let him be humbled by being cut, continue working toward being a Buc and coming back stronger than ever (if even possible.)
Im not saying lets do this or anything, but how often does a kicker get past his issues and become successful? Dude was able to kick in college, can he kick in the NFL at some point?

Tebow is colecting a paycheck in the minor leagues, and he sucks at his job. He sucked at pro football as well. Life isn't fair, but it becomes, more fair when you get an education. it's weird...

Against all odds, he actually does not suck at baseball. And he didn't suck at football.

And education, huh? I'm no englician, what's that comma after "becomes" for?

The comma is to give you pause to think about your post.....

Tebow sucked at pro football, and he's a horrendous baseball player. The biggest lies are the ones we tell ourselves. Don't eat the cheese my man!

That was sort of my point. Aguayo isn't just another kicker, we're talking about the most accurate kicker in college...ever! I realize most fans would like to see him, uh, er...walk the plank?!...for lack of a better term; but there is always a chance that he could eventually pan out (obviously after he gets over this confidence thing).

He wouldn't be the first to overcome failure. Just look at the majority of the most successful people in this world...Belichick, for example, failed in Cleveland...remember that? Now's he's considered by many to be the GOAT!

Some of the most successful people in the world will tell you that they learned far more from their failures than they did their successes. Maybe this turns out to be one of those times.

But having said all that, what Cheb said above does makes sense, so perhaps if Aguayo does indeed eventually become a success, it will be with another team.

The practice squad isn't just for storing guys that you think can develop, it's to have players available to use in practice. Keeping a kicker doesn't really help that.
