NFL Injury updates

Postby DreadNaught » Wed Aug 02, 2017 10:57 am

Week 1 opponent Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi has suffered a concussion and is in the protocol. He should be fine by week 1, but something to monitor.

Week 4 opponent Giants WR Sterling Shepard was carted off the field today.

Rams Dlinemen Dominque Easley tore his ACL and his out for the season.

Ravens Olinemen Nico Siragusa tore multiple knee ligament and is out for the season.

I really liked Siragusa for the Bucs somewhere in the middle rounds. His injury is an unfortunate one.

Baker was out there in full pads today and stated his day off Monday was given to him by the coaches. If guys are practicing right now this early in camp than they are fine.

They were riddled with injuries last season also. Curious if they have the same strength and conditioning coach? I know injuries are unpredictable to a degree, but having this many major injuries two years in row would make me want to look to see if there was something we're doing (or not doing) differently than other teams.

Thanks for the update. This is the crap you get right now when the NFL doesn't give actual injury updates. A lot of times, these publications get **** wrong.

Forrest Lamp carted off field with right leg injury. Chargers not having much luck after a solid draft.

For sure. I just pay attention on whether a guy is practicing or not, and if not how many days has he been out.

There were quite a few injuries league wide today it seems. All 32 camps are in full pads so the tempo/intensity of practices is increasing. Hopefully the Bucs can avoid a significant injury to a key player.

makes me think of clemson.

same strength and conditioning coach for 21 years - Joey Batson

Image
http://www.clemsontigers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=205529956

Joey Batson is now in his 32nd year as a strength & conditioning coach at the collegiate level and 21st year as the director of strength training at Clemson.

In that time, Clemson has produced:
12 first rounders
10 second rounders
9 third rounders

They have had 3 different players earn 1 pro bowl trip each in that time.

last time a player graduated from Clemson that went on to have sustained pro-bowl/all-pro level of success?

21 years ago. (4-time pro bowler Trevor Pryce left in 1996. 8-time pro bowler Bryan Dawkins left the year before that. And in the 5 years prior to that, they produced another 3 guys who went on to earn multiple pro bowls)

under Batson's conditioning, here's how their top talent NFL careers have gone:

1999 1st rounder Antuan Edwards - suffered career ending knee injury
2005 2nd rounder Justin Miller - made pro bowl once as a returner. suffered season ending knee injury the next year and was cut
2006 1st rounder Tye Hill - ended 2007 on IR, 2008 suffered season ending knee injury in week 4, petered out after
2008 2nd rounder Phillip Merling - tore achilles' before the start of 2010 season, petered out
2010 1st rounder CJ Spiller - dealt with injuries whole career - 2 solid years in 7 years, on 4th team in 5 years
2011 2nd rounder Jarvis Jenkins - tore ACL in preseason game, missed entire rookie season, on his 4th team already
2011 2nd rounder Marucs Gilchrist - actually made it through his rookie contract with no major injuries. Signed with Jets. Ended 2016 on IR
2012 2nd rounder Da'Quan Bowers - knee problems in college, knee problems in NFL, washed out
2013 1st rounder DeAndre Hopkins - has been healthy
2014 1st rounder Sammy Watkins - constant calf injuries, ankle injuries, spent most of 2016 on IR with broken bone in foot
2015 1st rounder Stephone Anthony - Solid rookie season, only played in 10 games in 2016, finished season on IR
2015 1st rounder Vic Beasley - underwhelming rookie season, beast second season
2016 1st rounder Shaq Lawson - drafted, underwent shoulder surgery - ruled our 4-6 months, played on IR/PUP to start rookie season
2016 2nd rounder Kevin Dodd - injured foot in offseason, 5 total tackles in rookie season, finished season on IR
2016 2nd rounder Mackensie Alexander - appeared in 13 games in rookie season, finished season IR
2017 1st rounder Mike Williams - needs back surgery before ever getting on the field

2 guys, Hopkins and Beasley, have had healthy careers. and they've only been in the league for 4 and 2 years, respectively

/shrug

who knows, correlation =/= causation, but there might be something there. just a funny coincidence

They fired their SC coach after that disastrous 2015 where most of the starting offense was IR'd.

Besides coaching you could also look at rule changes to see if they are causing any larger number of injuries as everyone starts aiming lower.

Nope. It's been obvious as to what's causing these injuries since the 2011 CBA. The lack of practice time, specifically padded practice, doesn't allow the body to prepare for and sustain the physical contact. They go from working out, to practices in shorts all offseason to all of a sudden hitting each other. No easing into it, just full go. Add in the fact that guys are bigger, faster, stronger than they've ever been, things are going to break more easily.

This makes absolutely ZERO sense...or your understanding of human anatomy is well below a preschooler's.

So what you're implying is that sustaining physical contact prepares the human body to react differently to physical contact. The laws of physics and their impact upon break-able things is of no consequence.

Interesting theory, Cotton...

Life ain't a zero sum game, kiddo. The injury issues are a combination of many things, not just one and the others are irrelevant. If it was just the CBA that caused it they would have leveled off since. They seem to be getting worse. Part could be particular team's conditioning, part could just be random deviation in what is actually a small sample size, part could be the CBA, and part could be rule changes that have everyone altering fundamental techniques because of rule changes. It's almost certainly a combination of all of them.

Why would it have leveled off since? There's been a pretty significant increase in injuries since the CBA. I agree other factors are at play; like the rules changes, dumb luck/randomness, but it's really logical that the lack of practice after a long off season and the fewer amount of padded practices are leading to more injuries.

I'm not saying the CBA was the only reason. Are you that stupid that you needed that explained to you? There's no 1 definent factor but the CBA and the big reduction in preparation time has played a big role. That's why the league is trying to push for more practice time in the new CBA.

Here is a link to the video of the Tannehill injury (if you have twitter).

It's never good when a player falls like that with no contact at all. Something went loose in his leg for that happen (ligament?).
