This will be a story line leading up the regular season and with day 1 of OTAs starting today we have officially begun the battle!

Both guys were kicking at the accuracy posts at OBP shown below from about 35-40yds out reportedly.

Folk: 4-4

Aguayo: 1-4 :(

I'm not going to say "muh sources" but I haven't heard anything good regarding Aguayo this offseason. I think he started behind in this competition, not in front.

Meh. This is the least enticing "battle" on the team. Only thing that might make it interesting would be if Aguayo came back to near perfect. But all thats gonna happen is we try to get a kicker that doesn't completely suck.

How is this kid doing so poorly? He rallied to make one, God bless him. I roasted Jason over him, but I can't help but pull for him. Not to make the team. Hell no. Just to make some kicks and go out looking somewhat professional. I was hoping he was locked in until I heard him compare his competition to the walk ons FSU brought in every year. He doesn't sound locked in yet and I'm not even sure he realizes the situation.

Does ANYONE believe Aguayo will make the 53 instead of Nick Folk?

Anyone?

Wasn't doubting you, I just don't follow many Bucs-related accounts and hadn't seen anything. Anyone have any good reporters we should be following during OTAs?

Greg Auman is solid. Trevor Simkema (?) from pooter report kind of annoys me, but he posts a lot of info like this.

Even if Aguayo is bad, I think they drag him along as long as they can solely for the cameras.

That being said, it is one day. If the competition ends up being close, I'd be surprised if Licht cuts him.

If I remember correctly, I think Bootz was one of the select few who liked the pick at the time. But of course that was probably because everyone else hated it. I think his posts were something along the line of: 'only casuals think you should never select a PK in the 2nd.'

If there is such a discrepancy in accuracy, I don't see how anyone could support the more inaccurate player.

It's still early days, but it isn't looking good for our boy here.

And (cough)...another 'Can't miss, traded up for, 2nd round pick' continues his best 'flat tire, riding the rims' impression,
further adding to the mystique that Bucs management has the NFC South right where they want them;
Late in the game with the Bucs close, down by a FG, or less.

Start practicing holding your breath, while beating last year's record... for, well, umm
Holding your breath.

Nick Folk is a good kicker with a long track record. I'm actually not too worried about it as long as he does his thing and wins the job.

MJW in the 80s: I'm not sure if we'll ever have a worse 2nd round pick than Booker Reese.
MJW in the 90s: I'm not sure if we'll ever have a worse 2nd round pick than Demetrious DuBose.
MJW in the 00s: I'm not sure if we'll ever have a worse 2nd round pick than Dexter Jackson.

Truly hope we ride this one out at least the rest of your life. In like the least morbid way possible. May you live long never seeing a worse 2nd round pick.

I couldn't speak to the 80s and 90s, but Dexter Jackson had zero career receptions. 34 touches as a returner, most all of them average.

Knock Aguayo if you want for inconsistency, but he has done good things, like make kicks and score points. Jackson did neither.

Just saying.

How about this:

As as player, he's been more useful than Jackson.

As a DRAFT PICK, he was worse. That's not HIS fault, it's Licht's, because drafting a kicker in the 2nd round is the act of an idiot. Dexter Jackson COULD have been Tyreek Hill for all we knew at the time. With his pure speed and playmaking prowess at App State, it wasn't science fiction to take that shot and hope you're right. You hope he gives you good kick returns, a few big plays on bubble screens, and the odd long TD catch. You're happy with that in the 2nd.

On the flipside, you draft a kicker, and unless he's absolutely the best in the game, it was a dumb pick. I don't want to debate this point because I've been there, done that, and honestly, I feel validated (though not PLEASED) by everything since. But the Dexter Jackson pick failed. The Aguayo pick was DESTINED to fail. Two different things.

Meh. If he was what they thought he was...a kicked that never misses...then he would have been a fine pick. But, he has to be that thing they think he is: Mr Perfect who maybe misses the occasional 65 yarder.
