Re: Bucs 2017 Regular Season Schedule

Postby Patrick McIrish » Thu Apr 20, 2017 5:39 pm

While we wait for the schedule and the SuperBook Week 1 lines (I have no life and I’m really, really tired of political discussion), thought I’d touch on one of the dumbest things people still say about the NFL schedule each year.

And that includes from ostensibly professional broadcast journalists.

I’m talking about the “winner’s schedule” and the “loser’s schedule.”

The whole idea being that the winning teams get a tougher schedule the next year and the losing teams get an easier schedule. You’ll hear broadcasters lament how a team that supposedly was supposed to get a tougher or easier schedule under this purported “rule” did not actually get such a schedule.

Well, there’s a reason for that.

7/8ths of who a team plays the next year has nothing to do with how they played the prior year.

Every year, of course, they play the same three intra-division teams twice a year, for 6 of the 16 games.

And each team sequentially rotates from year to year through the other three divisions of their conference and the other four divisions of the other conference. That’s 4 games from an intraconference division and 4 games from an interconference division, for a total of 8 more pre-scripted matchups each year.

So, that’s 14 of 16 pre-scripted matchups that have nothing to do with how a team played the prior year.

Now, as I understand it, the remaining two games are dependent on how a team played the prior year. A team that was #1 in their division will play two similarly #1 division teams in those two games. And so on 2's playing 2's, 3's playing 3's . . . . That’s how we get some of those marquee matchups every year that don’t arise as one of the automatic pre-scripted matchups.

It’s been that way for well over a decade.

But you still hear talking heads going on about the supposed rule that a winning team gets a strong schedule the next year, etc.

I even heard a local radio broadcast journalist one year lament that the then-good Colts were having to play the then-bad Texans twice in the coming year despite this supposed rule.

Uh, dumbass, they’re in the same freakin’ division . . . .

So, as the saying goes, “don’t be that guy.”

We move on.

It looks like we should be getting them just about the time Gronk starts his injury leave for a back injury. So that should help!

I like the week 11 bye, starting w/ 3 of 5 at Home, closing w/ 3 of 4 at Home. final 3 in the division w/ 2 at home.

Love the wk 17 vs Saints in Ray Jay. They've beat us in December in RayJay 2 years in a row and I'm ready to exercise that demon.

Pats on TNF isn't preferred, but at least it's a home game.

We already knew the opponents, but imo the schedule makers were fair with us. Nothing really terrible from a timing or logistics standpoint every other team doesn't have to deal with. In fact most with have bigger gripes.

No scheduled Sunday Night Football?

Come one when will we get some respect?

based on the schedule our only hope for SNF is we are a 10 win team and play the Packers. That could get flexed.

You lock in on the division.

6 games that are and always will be must-win.

Sweep the division and go .500 against everybody else and you waltz into a first round bye at 11-5.

That is the recipe for success.

We went 4-2 in the division last season iirc. I'd take that again in a heartbeat vs the NFCS in 2017.

The SoS is guesswork in April, but there should be some wins out of the division beween Home games w/ the Bears, Jets, and Lions along with road games @Miami, @Bills, @Vikes

NYG and @Cards should be chasing a playoff spot, but wouldn't be surprised of either wasn't.

@Packers, Patriots are good bets to be our toughest opponents assuming their QB is healthy.

Can we win 6 of those 10? One short last season. A win over Saints would have made us 5-1 in the division. Maybe we'll need that in 2017.

So we have @Atlanta week 12. Falcons will be coming off 4/5 on the road, the last 2 games of those 5 are the Cowboys and a MNF @Seattle right before playing us 6 days later.

It sets us up well for us to go into Atlanta week 12

12 1pm games as opposed to just 5 last season. Still just 1 home 1pm game in the 1st 7 weeks.

From espn

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Predicted record: 9-7

The Bucs won’t see a single NFC South opponent until Week 8, and they’ll face three consecutive divisional opponents in the final three weeks of the season, meaning we may not have a clue who wins the division until the very end. A December trip to Green Bay may be the toughest challenge yet for a team looking to better last year’s 9-7 mark and reach the playoffs for the first time in 10 years. -- Jenna Laine

This is a good schedule. Late bye week, last 3 of 4 at home. Play all division games, which will be the toughest, late in the season, so we'll be settled as a team.

Not gonna get hung up on primetime games, especially since we got Hard Knocks and a big one in February. Nor, do I care about cold weather games anymore. We're a different team than those of the past.

For fun:

Sept. 10, at Miami, 1 p.m. (Win)
Sept. 17, BEARS, 1 p.m. (Win)
Sept. 24, at Minnesota, 1 p.m. (Win)
Oct. 1, GIANTS, 4 p.m. (50/50)
Oct. 5, PATRIOTS, 8:25 p.m. (Thursday) (Loss)
Oct. 15, at Cardinals, 4:05 p.m. (Loss)
Oct. 22, at Bills, 1 p.m. (Win)
Oct. 29, PANTHERS, 1 p.m. (50/50)
Nov. 5, at Saints, 1 p.m. (Loss)
Nov. 12, JETS, 1 p.m. (Win)
BYE Week 11
Nov. 26, at Atlanta, 1 p.m. (Win)
Dec. 3, at Green Bay, 1 p.m. (Loss)
Dec. 10, LIONS, 1 p.m. (Win)
Dec. 18, ATLANTA, 8:30 p.m. (Monday) (Win)
Dec. 24, at Panthers, 1 p.m. (Loss)
Dec. 31, SAINTS, 1 p.m. (Win)

I count 9 wins, 2 tossups, with the possibility to go 11-5.

We get three “easier” games to start the year as a tune up, with Mike Glennon returning to Tampa for our home opener. We get the bye week late, and it gives us two weeks to prepare for a Falcons away game. The other Falcon game is MNF at home.

I really like our schedule this year.

We will beat the Patriots.

That game is our superbowl.

There is always one game every team gets up for every season this will be ours.

We will lose the following week though vs Cardinals
