So the Raiders are moving to Vegas

Postby Kress » Mon Mar 27, 2017 5:16 am

They now have an NFL team, an NHL team, and not to drag the Rays into this but....

Anyway, to stick with the forum, I don't like it. They're the freaking Raiders. They need to be in Oakland. Ugh.

I don't think anyone needs to be in Oakland.

The Warriors are leaving Oakland too. Like MB said no one needs to be there.

I still don't think this is so cut and dry. I saw a story over the weekend (just the headline, I didn't have a chance to read it) that Vegas casinos will not be able to take any action on a Vegas Raiders team. Including if they are in the Super Bowl. Can you imagine the casinos allowing a Super Bowl where they cannot take any action?

Well that throws a monkey wrench into it. I wonder if there is some sort of "the stadium is outside of the city limits" thing. I am sure that they thought this through.

This works for me, now I have more chances on watching my Bucs nearby where I live:

Chargers - 3.5 hour drive
Rams - Same as above
Arizona - 6 hour drive
Vegas - 5-6 hour drive

Pretty convincing 31-1 vote in favor of relocating from Oakland to LV.

3 teams in 2 offseasons moving cities.

I wonder who the 1 is. Probably Khan(Jags) or Ross(Dolphins). Rich snobs want Vegas to themselves.

It was the Dolphins.

Although Ross has just invested millions upgrading that stadium so I don't think he has any intention of moving. Plus I can't see the fins ever leaving Miami.

Khan should move the Jags to SD and build them a stadium, what a waste of a beautiful city..

Jacksonville, as a city destination, is really starting to come along from what I've been reading. Lots of Millenials moving there due to positive job growth. Construction is booming. I don't think Khan will want to go anywhere, nor should he. His city us moving up.

Khan has also invested heavily in both the stadium and surrounding area. You're right about Jacksonville growing. But it's not San Diego. I've lived in alot of places and if money was no object I'd choose to live in San Diego.

Spanos was a fool to leave San Diego to move to a city that didn't want his team and could not care less about them.

I am dubious about a Los Vegas team as well. Isn't Nevada damned near empty except for Vegas and Reno? Are they banking on the Area 51 crowd to keep the stadium full?

If that's the logic, st. Petersburg should have a team.

Sorry, my statement was pretty vague. I wasn't saying Ross or Khan wanted Vegas to themselves as in to move their teams there. I think Ross & Khan both see that there might be changes in terms of gambling and bets. Hard Rock just sponsered the Dolphins Stadium so I assume that's part of Ross' reasoning for voting no.

There won't be a problem filling the stadium. The amount of people who drive in from LA every weekend is quite staggering. People will plan their Vegas vacation to coincide with when their team visits I'm sure.

We will play in Las Vegas in 2020. The new stadium might be done by then and both teams should be pretty solid.

I don't know if you paid attention during that situation, but Spanos had no choice. There was an article on ESPN about how Spanos stated during the owners vote that LA didnt really want the Chargers, but they would die in San Diego.

I know people got mad, but SD was not interested in supporting the team. He should have tried to go elsewhere.

My best case scenario from the very beginning was:

Bring back the Rams
Keep the Chargers in SoCal
Ship those Raiders out of CA.

I was hoping for Mexico City, wouldn't that have been cool? Or San Antonio. But Vegas works, even if it is a stone throw from LA. It will be easy for fans to travel and see them, and football fans from all over converge in Vegas in the fall for vacations (best time to be in Vegas) and they should be starting to hit their window in 2019, if not sooner.

The only good storyline for Raider fans is that they push for a trophy in the next two years before they leave Oakland... but that stadium is going to either be empty or full of rowdy, pissed, vengeful fans. I sure as hell wouldn't step a toe in there as a football fan.

I've been in Vegas the past few days on business and this place is hyped for the Raiders, already seeing signs up welcoming the team. I was not expecting much of a reaction at all.

This is a common misconception. Vegas has twice the population of Tampa, and Clark county has twice the population of Hillsborough. Yes, people actually LIVE here! The strip is a very small part of this city.

So yea, put that together with the fact it is also very close to California and we won't have any issues filling this stadium. Besides, Buc fans of all teams should not be throwing stones when it comes to filling a stadium. I grew up in Tampa, wit the exception of 97-the early 2000's that has been a huge issue.

That's all true, but that's only part of it.

Here are two scenarios for a fan with some money and some PTO:

1) We can fly out to Buffalo/Minneapolis/Detroit to see (our team) play a road game this year!
or
2) We can fly out to Vegas to see a road game instead!

Hmmmm, which one most fans usually pick?

Even if eight people lived in Las Vegas, they'd have no trouble filling the stadium. The trouble, I imagine, will involve creating any kind of homefield advantage with that in mind. Even if the Vegas fans are into it, I'd expect one of largest road-fan crowds on average.

Yup, many people already vacation in Vegas. Now you can schedule your fall Vegas vacation around a Bucs game.

I will be there in 2020. It may be the first year in the new stadium.

Well, Vegas might have more people than Tampa but that's just a function of being in a state that is basically a desert owned by the Federal Government. 95 percent of the people in Nevada basically live in 2 counties. Tampa has a bigger surrounding population to draw from.

The stadium will sell out due to fans from the visiting teams and drive in traffic from LA. Thousands upon thousands of people drive in from LA every weekend and that number will only expand now,

The United States Census Bureau 2009 estimates place the population for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Statistical Area at 1,902,834 people, and the region is one of the fastest growing in the United States.

From http://worldpopulationreview.com/us-cities/ ...
Population Of Las Vegas In 2017
Las Vegas' estimated population of over 600,000 accounts for just the city proper. The Las Vegas metropolitan area has a population of over 2 million. When most people talk about Las Vegas, they refer to the city as well as areas beyond its city limits, especially the Las Vegas Strip (known for its resorts and casinos) or even the whole Las Vegas Valley.

Tampa Population 2017
Tampa's population is estimated at 350,000, up from 346,000 in 2011. Tampa is part of a large metropolitan area called the Tampa Bay Area (2.8 million population), and the city is also part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan statistical area. This is the fourth largest metro area in the Southeastern U.S. after Miami, Washington, D.C. and Atlanta. The Greater Tampa Bay area has more than 4.3 million people and is projected to hit 4.56 million by 2017.

Not sure why D.C. is considered a southeastern city, but whatever.
