Bucs sign JJ Wilcox

Postby BacksidePursuit » Sat Mar 11, 2017 10:19 am

Estimated 2 years, $8.5 million. Dude lost his job to a rookie so temper expectations. But safety depth helps I guess.

Major Wright 2.0

Maybe that's a little harsh, but we'll see.

3rd rd pick in 2013

Started most of 2014 and 2015 for Cowboys before losing his starting job last season.

Hopefully he can be a good fit here.

I'll give him a chance, but don't really understand why we didn't just bring back Bradley. He was solid.

I'd take McDougald over this dude for sure. Hopefully we can still re-sign Bradley.

I don't hold that against him.

Byron Jones, world record holder for the broad jump, was drafted in the first round by the Cowboys as a cornerback. But when Jones was thrust into the starting lineup at corner because of injury, he was burned pretty badly. But the dude is an athlete and has some experience at safety. Maybe put Jones there? Well, you certainly don't want to bench rock solid team captain Barry Church at strong safety. Next to him, you have an occasionally injured former third rounder as the free safety. So you bench the third rounder and put in your first rounder, who does a fairly good job. The third rounder is now a reserve and special teamer. Then his contract runs out and you like him, you really do, he's a good player, but your team is up against the cap and you can't afford luxuries like a good third safety and special teamer.

That is the story of JJ Wilcox.

At the very least, he offers excellent depth and special teams play, but I think he easily contends to be a starter. The pay and contract are fair. He has a legit chance to prove himself again. He's a great open field tackler and a decent cover man. Most importantly, he shores up the holes in our team and doesn't force our hand on draft day.

Good signing.

He's no better than Conte.

Also basically confirms McDougald won't be back

According to Cowboys fans, he's a really hard hitter that takes really bad angles. Most said he had by far his best season last year when he played.

Generally though, most would've liked him back and think we're getting a decent to good player.

Like Cheb said, signing WIlcox shores up another glaring hole so we aren't forced to considering reaching for a need over BPA. Now we could draft literally anyone in damn near any round. It's a good place to be.

That is hard to believe considering Conte might be the worst Safety we've had start a game since Piscitelli.

After mulling this over, I've concluded that Mike Smith desired more of an intimidation factor from our safeties. If Wilcox can bring one thing to our D, it's a boomstick.

We didn't have abysmal safety play in the second half of the season. If our D line can keep improving and start getting consistent pressure our safeties are going to have easier jobs. I'm not worried a ton about our safeties. Also think we address it early in the draft.

That's also because the second half of the season is when Tandy went in and started intercepting everything.

He is CLEARLY better than Conte. Singed, anyone who has watched them both.

Second point, agreed. Tandy-Wilcox-Conte will be the top three safeties. McDougland onto his next adventure.

So, you're saying Conte stars over Wilcox? Are you willing to bet on it junior?

I'm saying flip a coin. The result is likely the same. Wilcox lost his starting spot for a reason.

He lost his starting spot because Byron Jones is a stud. It is what it is. Byron Jones is a better player than Wilcox is, all day long. Wilcox, though, is better than ANYONE we started at safety last year.

This offseason has been a homerun so far, without any of the silliness of 2014. Baker and Wilcox will both start and upgrade. Jackson has been written of enough. Re-signing Gholston, Quizz, and Robinson were all huge. I have beef with the lack of pursuit of Whitworth. I have beef with our ignoring Cordarelle Patterson. But man...we're making the right moves on the whole.

Not sure this came across how he wanted but I love the quote in his interview where he said something along the lines of "Mike Smith knows how to make average / good players, like me, great". At least you're honest!

OBP is nailing it.

They haven't messed with the core of this team a bit. They've upgraded three key spots at below market value prices on multiyear deals. They brought back the guys worth bringing back. They're positioned themselves to go BPA in the draft for the first time since 2006 (David Joseph.)

This has been a great 10 days in Tampa.

He lost his starting job because of him. Not Byron Jones. At that point he was no having a good season in 2015 and Dallas decided they needed better play out of the position. Had nothing to do with Jones, who was a corner at that point. You're avoiding the truth like always.

Per PFF, Wilcox had the 27th highest rating amongst safeties in 2016 (and the highest of his career by a significant margin) at 81.5.

McDougald was 42nd at 79. Conte was 88th at 42 (the lowest of his career).
