The 25 Card Question

Postby MJW » Wed Feb 15, 2017 8:39 am

We're redoing our son's room and I bought him a sweet 25 slot football card display.

You know what I'm going to ask.

Here's how I have it right now -

The Current Guys Shelf:
1) Jameis
2) Evans
3) David
4) McCoy
5) Martin (with Ali Marpet as the designated alternate if the axe falls)

The No Doubters:
6) Selmon
7) Sapp
8) Brooks
9) Lynch
10) Barber
11) Wilder
12) Alstott
13) Gruber
14) Giles
15) Simeon
16) Nickerson
17) Doug Williams

My Final Eight
18) Warrick Dunn
19) The Bull
20) Ricky Bell
21) Tony Mayberry
22) Batman Wood
23) Dave Logan
24) Randy Grimes
25) Shelton Quarles

This is really a question for the older Bucs fans. Am I leaving out any old timers who are better than the guys at the bottom of the list? Some of the others I considered:
Mike Washington
Ricky Reynolds
Dewey Selmon
Cecil Johnson
Dave Moore
Scot Brantley
Brian Kelly
Cedric Brown
Mark Cotney
Mark Carrier
John Cannon

Should I move anyone in or out?

The only player that I can say for sure is being left out is Mark Carrier. I'm old enough to remember reading articles about his rookie training camp exploits as a kid so I've witnessed the entire career. He is the best WR we've ever drafted before Evans. I've witnessed a few spectacular catches he made first hand. There's no doubt in my mind he's a top 25 Buc.

I'm thinking Cotney and Brantly might deserve consideration but that's more by reputation. What about Pear? That's another.

I think although not a "great" some consideration should be tossed at Joe Jurevicius and maybe even Galloway.

Just throwing Donnie Abraham out there - 38 INT's aint no slouch. he was instrumental in bringing ronde up and was a big part of his success (donnie was a better man-to-man lock down corner and freed Ronde up to play his game)

edit: man he went on a tear in '99: League leading 7 ints, 2 pick sixes, 2 sacks, 65 tackles and a forced fumble

Considering our kicking woes, I think Martin Gramatica should be considered. He was Automatica Gramatica for quite a while, didn't end pretty, but he's a Buc we'll always remember.

Hugh Green. I just assumed he was in the list at first glance. He was fantastic. You can make an argument for him cracking the top 5 Buc defenders. Again, really have no memory of him playing personally, but just watched an old John McKay show and the coach named Wilder offensive MVP for the season and he gave Green the defensive MVP over Selmon. He for sure has to be in, more so than Carrier.

This.

Carrier, plus people still underestimate Abraham. Running a Tampa 2, he took half of the field off of the table. As a result, Quarles was free to get deep, Ronde could clamp down a bit more than he probably would have liked, and Lynch was free to roam.

It was a symmetry, with of course the pressure up front from Sapp, Rice, etc. being crucial, but Abraham was a crucial part of it.

yeah, agreed, I'd put Joe over my suggestion (Abraham)

Also, agreed on Gramatica - he was "our guy" for a while there

Dave Pear.

Actually he only played a few years here but was the team MVP our first year, went to the Pro-Bowl.

I'm surprised Mark Carrier wasn't already above the cut, and I agree on adding him.

Ricky Reynolds was always a personal favorite of mine, because my number is #29. Removing that bias, I'd try to fit Brian Kelly in there somehow.

I'll address every point, but RE: Joe J, I can't do it. His story, and his two huge moments during that run, are the stuff of legend, but we're still talking about a guy who has half as many career catches for the Bucs as Jacquez Green. I can't put him in the 25 over guys who played ten years for us, which is what I'd have to do.

Gramatica would be a novelty, but does he belong on this list? No.

Caddy is close, but it's tough with a guy who was ultimately a disappointment for the franchise.
No way on Key. Unlike the NFL Hall Of Fame, being a douche hurts you here!
Simeon is on there.
Pierson's an interesting one. I don't think he makes it but she should have been a finalist.
Can't do Jackson for the same reason I can't do Jurevicious. He didn't do enough on the whole for us. I'd put one of the early years safeties in first.

The trouble is, there's a corner logjam with Kelly and Abraham. Kelly was a big part of title team and had a really good run for us, but Abraham was clearly IMHO the better Buccaneer.

Ricky Reynolds is a good one, too. We've had a lot of good corners over the years, and really only one great one. I'm tempted to keep them all out but #20 because there just isn't any way to figure them out.
