***OFFICIAL 2017 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Off-Season Thread!***

Postby Plinko » Sun Jan 01, 2017 10:30 pm

Hi, Buccaneers fans! :) Let the purge begin! Our 2016 Tampa Bay Buccaneers improved their regular season record by three games from 6-10 in 2015 to 9-7 in 2016, but still not enough to reach the NFL postseason, but instead eliminated themselves from the playoffs.

Now begins the long off-season between now and July. First activity is the players report to One Buccaneers Place to clean out their lockers at the Buccaneers facility, and the players may like say their farewells, reminisce their personal and team relationships, and discuss the past season and their team experience with other players, as they bag away their personal equipment and belongings from their team lockers. Buccaneers may also give final season ending interviews, and press conferences summarizing their NFL season and experience as a Tampa Bay Buuccaneer player to the media in the locker room, while other Bucccaneers players clear their lockers, and possibly exchange autograph jerseys.

Many of this year's Buccaneers team moving forward, while some of them may return to the Bucs by contract, other players may decide take the option to sign with other NFL teams, retire, or even help the Bucs management restructure their current contracts to stay within the Bucs salary cap to stay with the Bucs next season, but help the Bucs sign future agents and rookies with the restructuring for a better Bucs team on the field next season.

Next come the 2017 NFL Combine at Indianapolis in February. NFL Calendar year begins in the first week of March, and the Bucs, like the rest of the NFL teams, can sign veteran free agents to lucrative contracts within their teams salary cap.

Then come the NFL Draft in May, the Organized Team Activities in May and June, and the summer team training camp, where the 90-man camp roster of drafted and undrafted college rookies, veteran players and free agents, report to the Buccaneers Training and Administrative complex at One Buccaneers Place, Tampa, FL 33607.

We wish the players though a productive offseason as you leave the Buccaneers and football, and prepare for next season this summer.

Also wish Buccaneers management good luck and the best as they reload the franchise for 2017, and GO BUCS!!!!! ;) :) TAMPA.......BAY!!!!!!! 8-) :P :) :) :) :)

Our first order of business is to see what happens with our coaches. Does Mike Smith move to a HC job? Will we change ST coaches(We really need to)? Also, anybody on the market from recently fired teams that would be an improvement.

I wouldn't mess with the staff much, even if Smith gets a HC gig just promote Hayes.

Will have to do something with the offensive staff. The offense is horrific.

the offense needs work but replacing the staff isn't the answer as they aren't the problem. injuries & lack of talent/depth in key positions were the culprits this year.

consistency for the offense & an infusion of talent will be the answer here. i don't think the unit is far from being great. as red auerbach once famously said, "...one or two little moves, and we're good to go."

RB is gonna be a big question. If we cut Martin, what's the plan? Not much in FA at the moment(unless Pittsburgh botches re-signing Bell). Do we really want to spend a premium pick on a RB? With all the work our Oline needs, I say no. Dalvin Cook would be the sexy pick, but I want to do this the right way. Build from the inside out. But, that being said, if Cook is BPA by a long mile, I won't complain.

We are kind of fortunate. A lot of experts are calling this the deepest RB class in draft history thanks to an historic group (expected) of underclassmen.

Considering that, and considering Martin is 28, injury prone, inconsistent, and suspended, and I don't see how we don't cut him and draft a guy to push/supplant Rogers.

I think the 3rd round might be a good spot to snag one.

Firing the coaching staff won't reduce injuries or make bad players Pro Bowlers. We had our best season since 2010, let's just see what this group can do next year. If they falter then you talk about changes on the staff. What we need on offense is some new offensive lineman, receivers and depth. Our offense was straight torn apart by injuries this year.

Everyone wants to draft "from the inside out", but this draft is not that good for OL. Robinson and Ramczyk most likely won't make it to the 19th pick. Quentin Nelson is currently the top Guard, but is Guard really our problem? Ethan Pocic is the top Center but #20 would be a super reach, would have to be a trade back scenario.

On the flip side, the draft is fairly deep in DL. Wouldn't mind a pick there.

And of course WR and RB are fairly deep.

Edit: just did some review of Pocic and he maybe wouldn't be a *super reach* but I'd still like to trade back a bit if that's the pick.

Free Agency will be interesting this year.

Hard to get too in depth, because a lot of these guys might very well get resigned by their current team,.. but the off-season bodes well for speculations,..

Alshon Jeffery is an Unrestricted Free Agent at this point,.. is only 26 years old,.. He'd be a good fit here,.. No State Income Tax,. Warm Weather. He'll garner around $14 Million, which is only about $3mil more than Vincent Jackson made this year.

Matt Kalil: High Quality Left Tackle,.. UFA,.. Only 27 years old

Andre Smith: Another Vikings OL who will be an UFA,.. Only 29,.. They can't re-sign them all,.. Can They?!?!?

Bradley Sowell: Was originally brought in the league as an undrafted Free Agent right here in Tampa, but has been with Seattle.

We're not signing a WR to a $14mil a year deal when we have to re-sign our own Pro Bowl WR to a deal that will exceed that amount.

Sorry, but are you talking about the Matt Kalil up here in Minny? People here want him shot out of a cannon into the sun in the worst way. They hate him pretty well around these parts.

The Smith move could solve the CB depth issue.

Grimes
Hargreaves
JAB

With Smith and Elliott as reserves. Koetter seemed to indicate the org is very high on Smith as a CB. Perhaps he could replace Grimes in a year.

Yea I think Jeffrey is a little too expensive. Some team is going to pay him to be their #1 guy. I'd take a look at someone like Kenny Stills or Desean Jackson.

No thanks on Jeffrey, we need a dynamic speed threat on offense, and the coaching staff knows it so it's going to be a really fun offseason for us.

For #2 receiver, I can see the team going after players like Pierre Garcon, Robert Woods, Terrance Williams, or Markus Wheaton. I think DeSean Jackson being our #2 receiver next year is a long-shot.

For offensive line:

Is it time for the team to look at upgrading LT, or at least getting someone to challenge Donovan Smith? How do people feel about his performance in year-two?

I think Donovan held his own against some pretty decent pass rushers this year. I wouldn't be opposed to an upgrade, though.

I think Donovan Smith answered the bell and improved his play. He still has a ways to go to improve as a run blocker but in pass protection he got a lot better. Looked a lot quicker, his hand usage got a lot better as well. He's improving which is what you want. I think we should realize that he's going up against the other teams top pass rusher most weeks. So his grading scale is different from the others.

Right side is another story. Marpet isn't as good as people are advertising. Still drops his head upon contact. Still has sloppy technique. Bends way too much which negates his power. I thought he was better last year at run blocking than this year. He allowed penetration way too often this season. But coming from a D3 school and being thrust into an NFL lineup those issues are to be expected.

Pamphile I thought did a okay but he's probably best served as depth. Hawley is scrappy. Not the best but we need a guy like him on the field. Evan Smith provides good value being able to cover 3 interior line spots. He filled in yesterday in 2 of those spots. Dotson/Cherilus, the end is near.

Marpet is easily our best, and most consistent lineman. Smith has the physical tools to take that title, but until he gets his mind right, we'll continue to be frustrated by his play. Pamphile plays admirably at times, but lets himself become a non factor against pedestrian talent too often. Hawley is a grade A attitude in a C+ body. Love the guy for what he does, but he ain't elite...average to average plus at best. RT is the the Springfield tire fire.

Getting a Tackle early and a + prospect at Center in the mid rounds would make me feel much more confident in the line moving forward; and still allow us to grab talent at skill positions of need to shore up weaknesses on both sides.

Of course, we may feel the need to take a long snap specialist in round one...
