He's an intriguing athlete. Seems to play softer at times than he should for a 225lb guy.

I agree w/ GT, is this guy a football player, or workout warrior?

He's a good player. He might be the force of nature you'd expect at his measurables, but "rich man's George Illoka" is a reasonable expectation. And Illoka is a really underrated player.

And Josh McCown can dunk.

It doesn't matter.

If all the combine hype doesn't propell him into the first round and he's there at our second pick, I'd feel good taking him. We are in a position with Wilcox, Conte and Tandy that he wouldn't HAVE to come in a be a savior. He can push for the job and if he's not ready yet, no panic, develop him and that athleticism to being a great safety.

We are hopefully becoming a team that can start grooming and growing our own players. Need to get out of the mindset that every draft pick needs to come in and be immediate starters and upgrades

yeah I think the hype around his combine will push him up to 1st - 2nd round. I agree with Bootz (kill me) though, I wouldn't touch him til the 4th.

Let him be some other team's 1st round mistake... that's a Jets pick

Also, for just saw on PFF while looking for shittiest safety combo in the nfl:

"The swing in performance from Conte to Tandy was about as big as it could have been. Conte ranked 90th out of 91 safeties in overall grade, while Tandy was the highest-graded safety over the final five weeks of the season, allowing a passer rating of just 34.3 into his coverage."

Let's throw a playmaker/football player like Peppers back there with Tandy and roll out

Ya people are forgetting how good Tandy was. He basically had a Pro Bowl season in 6 games.

I am curious of Contes second half season evaluation. He's no world beater but once our D started clicking he played better. And he was a big part of a couple wins.

That's the thing, he's way more of a star athlete than he is a good football player.

I actually like a Tandy/Wilcox duo. I think Wilcox will surprise a lot of people. Cowboy fans are still looking at him through 2014/15 eyes where he didn't exactly have great years. He was taking a lot of poor angles and was struggling with coverages. Not exactly surprising because he only played one year at safety in college (was a RB before that). He was always supposed to be more of a project kind of guy, but the Cowboys were impatient. He probably had his best year performance wise this past season rotating in, much like Tandy. He's grown a lot and hopefully continues to get even better. I still think we should draft another guy, especially if a great talent happens to falls to us and be great value, like Hooker or Adams in the first (who would be BPA anyway) or Baker or King in the second. I'd take Obi in the third as well, but as a project. Not quite sure where I'd slide Peppers.

The great thing about the roster is that there really isn't any huge holes. Ironically, I'd say the biggest is at RB. We could also use an upgrade or more likely a development player at C and RT. But even at CB the staff seems to really like Ryan Smith who they moved back to corner after being very impressed with him facing off against Evans in practice and could be a surprisingly good player for us next season.

RFA action: #Bucs DE Jacquies Smith is on a visit to #49ers, source said. 13.5 sacks in '14 & '15, almost fully recovered from an ACL in '16
------------
This would suck. We have lowest tender on him so SF wouldnt' have to give up a draft pick to sign.

We can match whatever their offer sheet is and keep him.

I'd like to know what the difference was between original and 2nd round tenders.

Not a big loss, but a situational pass rusher is always nice to have.

We don't get **** in return, so I'd like for us to match then have him walk in FA after the season so he gets calculated in the comp pick formula next year.

Losing Jaq Smith would suck. I think folks are forgetting what a nice surprise he was for us. He may only be our 4th DE, but if we lose him, suddenly DE goes from a non-need, to a pretty significant one come draft time.

How good of coaching did he get at UConn? You dont think we can get him to reach his full potential?

I'm on the other side of the fence. I think people here overrate Smith. I think Bootz and I are the only ones who have said as much. He had a few splash plays for us and has been injured far too frequently. If he goes and plays for the 49ers he'll be just as useful for us as he was last season. If we keep him, ok, have some depth. If we lose him, our 4th/5th DE, it does NOT make DE a significant need for the team. We can grab a mid round guy to fill the spot and groom behind solid starters.

If he's there at our round 2 pick I think he's worth a shot. His athleticism is off the charts and he'd come here with no pressure and no worry of being thrust in too early. We would be able to develop him and put him in when he's ready. He's a boom or bust guy but I think we are in a good spot to take the risk.

I will say though, I've been getting a strange feeling we are the ones who go Peppers in round 1.

That's all he was: a surprise. We've likely seen the best he has to offer. Losing the at best 4th DE on this team won't be that much of a loss. If at all. Some other UDFA can step in and provide more of what he gave us last season.

Also, RBF, keep in mind how cautious you are about players coming off of reconstructive surgery. Nothing is guaranteed.

Seeing how we really have not seen Ryan Russell and Channing Ward look like they were shot out of a cannon, we are just at hoping that will happen. I guess George could shock the hell out of me, with showing his hard work, translates to him wanting his NFL career to continue. Of course I will be looking at Will's declaration of wanting to be a great pass rusher.

Few splash plays? Your describing our entire defensive line arent you? Like bottom of the league few...

Jacquies Smith is injury prone and not all that great to begin with. I'd like to keep him for a reasonable amount but if the 49ers give him decent money on a long term contract, we gotta let him walk.

He was the 4th DE, no doubt, but it was nice having a guy like him in that spot. Now we are going to be forced to give heavy PT to someone unproven if there is (and there will be) an injury at DE.

Much like we did with Jaq. How do you think he became a "surprise"? And honestly any assumption about what the DE position will look like in September is premature. Especially before the draft.
