The rise and fall of the steroid era was fun. From Conseco to Bonds to McGuire to Sosa to Palmero making his proclamation in Congress all the way down to the Mitchell report. I loved that era of baseball. There will never be anything like it.

yeah, RIP that era...

I remember idly riding my bike around the neighborhood with my friends, musta been '98, because it was during the HR race between Sosa and McGwire, when they were about to break the record, and a friend's brother came running outside, "hey guys! McGwire's up to bat!" ... we all rushed in and watched, knowing we were watching history. I was 10. The sun seemed bright and things were good.

Good example last night. It was a great game, but you just don't know anybody out there. We started rookies at all 5 infield positions. ALL FIVE. It's like just stumbling upon a random AAA game on T.V. If you watch, you pick a team and root for it just for the sake of watching a game and having an interest in it, but you don't know anybody out there. No-name baseball.

We then have a pitcher we do know on the mound in Snell, and he's dealing. So much so, that he's perfect through 5 with only 47 pitches. That's fun, right? It's that point in the game where you start paying attention to such things. So coach trots out there and pulls him. WE PULLED A GUY WHO WAS PERFECT THROUGH 5 AND HAD ONLY THROWN 47 PITCHES.

:banghead:

But hey. #RaysWin, right?

It saddens me to say it but it honestly seems this organization is disappointed that the team isn't as bad as it looked on paper going into the season. They also didn't get their top shortstop prospect either so that has to be disappointing.

In the state of today's game, I kind of get pulling Snell. We had a decent lead and it was his first start back from the DL. Would a perfecto or no-no been nice to see? Sure, but you don't (potentially) risk the health of your best player for something that most likely will not happen anyway.

Rays reach win #60(60-57 overall). If we somehow end up with a winning record at the end, give Cash Manager of the Year. After the way this team was gutted over the season, we should be closer to Baltimore's record than ours. Not sure how we managed to be even an average team...But he's doing it.

You don't gut the team the way we did if you're not hoping/expecting us to be bad. I imagine we expected to be playing for a high draft pick next year. As for a top SS prospect...we might already have one in Wander Franco.

There's a baseball writer I follow who wrote about the Rays' pitching strategy. Thought you guys might be interested:

Part 1: 'This could change the game:' Rays' 'openers' and 'bulk guys' on their new pitching strategy

Part 2: Zack Greinke misses mark with critique of Rays' pitching strategy

I'm personally a big fan of using an opener. The downsides are that it screws up the stat lines and record keeping - two things that will make MLB bunch its panties, place that bunched wad inside another set of panties, and then bunch them again - but that's about it. Using matchups when you know who the hitters are going to be, versus at some random who-knows-when part mid-game as you are forced to pull a guy out, keeping the best hitters from seeing your true long-range guy until inning 3 or 4, all of it. It has always been the case that a good setup/closer combo shortens the game for you by chopping off the back end of the other team's scoring chances.

If you can do the same to the front, and pinch both ends, with a healthy "starter" to fill in the middle 6, why not? It just makes sense to me.

This is pretty simple:

NOBODY thought the Devil Rays would be a winning team this year.

And that was BEFORE the starting pitchers started going down like a fat kid on a see-saw.

Locally...the team had stated at the beginning of the year, that we would see a LOT of kids coming up this year. They've done EXACTLY what they said they were gonna do. In fact, they said that the "wins weren't as important" as seeing what we had in the future.

This is a damn fun team to watch. I live 3 minutes (maybe) from the stadium and I WANT to support this team. It just sucks that we have Jeffrey Lauria Jr. as an owner. That scumbag can suck a sack of *****. Can't wait to see what he doesn't do next year, when his new tv contract pays him a shit-ton of money and we STILL don't spend money on players...

That said...it'll be interesting to see what transpires when we can get to the 40 man roster. Watch for a kid named Austin Mathews. He's another minor leaguer that is supposed to be something special.

The future looks bright in Tampa. Unless we keep doing business the same way we've been doing it.

So Alex Cobb is 4-15 with the Orioles this year. Kind of a sad stat...I expected him to be better. Only had a losing record once here(and that was a 1-2 record with only 5 games played in 2016)

Rays are now 70-61 on the season, winning 8 straight games and 10 of their last 12. Blake Snell improves to 16-5 on the season with a 2.05 ERA(He's allowed 3 runs total in his last 5 starts).

Not sure how they're doing it, but they are lol

Only once has a Rays pitcher won 20 games in a season and that was David Price in 2012. He almost did it prior winning 19. If Blake Snell wins 20 games this year imo he is the best pitcher we have ever had. He is shutting down the Red Sox and Yankees. They have no answer for him.

Faaaaar too early to say that about Snell.

But it's looking good thus far. Let's see him do it for another year or three.

At the rate he's going he'll be traded come January. He's too good to be a Ray long term. They'll turn him for 2 left handed relief pitchers and a shortstop prospect.

Well, when you're offered a shortstop prospect, it's not like you can turn it away.

No worries. Our cap is gong to go up by AT LEAST 5 mil this year.

Unless it doesn't.

No, you're right. Stewie's cap will go up. He'll probably go on the radio and announce it all official and stuff.

He won't actually spend to that cap, mind you, and he'll then go on the radio a second time and tell us that it's all our fault because attendance is his reason why, but the fact remains that he will have very nobly set his cap there.

How's about this for some fun:

This team could win 95-97 games this year...and not even sniff the playoffs. Maybe not get within 5 games of it.

And that's with TWO, Wild Cards.

Are you shitting me with this?

This team is so impressive...still struggling to figure out what's up with Bauers. How can a swing that sweet go this horribly wrong?

Looking at the other candidates, I agree. Kubler has a higher ERA, more losses, and 50 more hits allowed in 2 more starts than Snell. He's really the only other one that can be considered for it.

He'll get what, 4 more starts? He needs to win two of those. Seeing that 20 up there does wonders.

I'm also thinking that he'll actually benefit from the All-Star snub fiasco. Voters will lean his way this time in order to avoid looking bad.
Edit: Or maybe not. They won't want him to win because then it will pay their prior screw up look worse. They left off the Cy Young! Who knows....

If this year doesn't convince Hillsborough to vote for the stadium nothing will. Just think of the pitching we're gonna get in a few more years with the likes of McKay, McClanahan and Liberatore. Combined with what could potentially be the best draft in team history, Erik Neander is just straight ****ing KILLING it by adding Meadows, Baz and Glasnow on top of it for Archer. I'm serious, one more great trade like the one for Archer and another draft like we just had and it is entirely possible that we will have one of the best teams in the AL by the time the stadium opens.

Just imagine what we'd do with a $120 million payroll in 3 years
