San Fran is getting a deal together ... and asking Tampa to take salaries and players they may not want

NBC Sports
Longoria is coming off his worst season as a major leaguer, having hit .261/.313/.424 with 20 homers in 2017. He’s also still owed $86 million through 2022. Which, back when the deal was signed seemed like quite a bargain for the Rays — and likely has been over the duration of the contract — but now seems somewhat steep for the 32 year-old third baseman. That said, the Giants currently have Pablo Sandoval penciled in at third base on their depth chart, so Longoria would definitely be an upgrade, even if 2017’s dip wasn’t just a blip.

Nightengale says that for the Giants to take on Longoria, the Rays would have to take on a high salary veteran such as Denard Span or Hunter Pence. Span is owed $9 million in 2018, with a $4 million buyout on a $12 million option for 2019. Pence is owed $18.5 million in 2018 in the final year of his contract and has a full no-trade clause.

If he stays with the Rays, Longoria will achieve 10-5 rights — full no-trade protection due to being a ten-year veteran with five years of service on the same club — so if the Rays are going to move him, it’ll be much easier this offseason, not once the 2018 season begins.

I will stop supporting the franchise is they go through with that abomination of a deal.

You think they can dump $86 mil in salary for a player who seems to be on the wrong side if the hill and not take back any money? Good luck.

So, without Longoria, the Rays finish below .500? How's that different?

Considering how much we like to get fleeced in these deals, I imagine it'd be Longo and a decent pitching prospect for Span and the Giants 39th rated prospect. Would rather keep Longo tbh, even if he is declining....he means a lot to this team, though not spending money probably means more

Jesus Christ this organization is inept. I was in favor of trading Longoria if it meant we actually got someone good in return. But **** it who am I to make such a grand expectation? They got lucky once with Delmon Young and they thought they could do anything. We started as a team that had some of the best talent in the league and we lost them all to free agency and then traded what great players we still had for somewhat decent ones and then trade them for complete and total dog **** while dismantling any and all semblance of continuity from year to year. At this rate I'm just waiting for Archer to go next. You can always count on the Rays to trade a dollar for two quarters, and a dime.

I don't care if we got rid of everyone, chopped our payroll to $50 million and lost 107 games. I just want there to be an actual plan that comes to fruition like it did in 2008 or like how it did for the Houston Astros. Unbelievably, that means if you get rid of a Longoria you DON'T get total **** in return.

I truly wish MLB allowed teams to trade draft picks. Longo probably fetches the 2nd overall no problem.

Bye Long = Bye Rays

What a pathetic franchise. I realize they have to conduct business a certain way, but this just flat out sucks. Dumping Zobrist hurt. As did several other big trades. But this one is just .... I can't even come up with a word.

I'll prolly get flamed for this, but wouldn't surprise me if this move is the tilting point in the Rays eventually leaving.

I think it's a decent deal. Some prospects and you get rid of the monster contract that Longoria had. I know he was a fan favorite and it would've been nice to see him retire in Tampa, but he's on the wrong side of 30 and isn't that great these days.

Not a bad haul(Their best prospect and 2 others)...but this team will be straight up butt next year.

I'm more surprised that the Giants made the trade tbh. They really sucked last year, their lineup is old, and their farm system is trash.

Seriously, they have 1 prospect in the top 100 rankings(and none in any of the position rankings iirc)....and they just traded him to the Rays.

It was a pleasure Longo

I don't see how 2 single A pitching prospects help make a good trade.

Yeah, I don't buy the line of thinking that "Longo is done." Is he putting up the same numbers offensively he did 6 years ago? No. But he's still up there in terms of most productive third baseman and one of our best bats and most clutch players. The people saying "it was time for him to go" or "he's not the same player he was" are just trying to make themselves feel better.

lmfao and we manage to completely botch the Longoria trade. Why am I not surprised? Congratulations we have like 6 shortstops in the system now. This whole thing is a debacle. Just ****ing get the new ballpark built so we don't have to deal with this bullshit anymore. The longer it takes the less fan support the Rays are gonna get once they do make it to Hillsborough.

Who gives a ****?

Nobody here (Tampa).

The LIGHTNING...and NHL (HOCKEY!) team, outdraws the Devil Rays.

Pretty funny how the Bolts are one of the top franchises in pro-sports...and the Rays are one of the worst.

Ownership MIGHT have something to do with that...

**** the Rays. Pure apathy. And Stewie is gonna put up 150 mil for a 900 mil stadium? **** that and **** him. Take your shitty team and move to Montreal. You won't be missed. Loser.

So you're assuming Duffy is actually gonna play this year?

That's a mighty bold statement.

Ahhhhh I never said he'd play. I said he's our 3rd baseman. I mean we just got another shortstop. We're ****ing saved! We'll just move Adames over to 2nd!

You guys should be happy that he's finally going to get to play in the majors!

I kid, I kid. The Rays are going to win 20 more games than the Royals next year.

Gold gloves are probably the most worthless award ever. All that means is that he's popular.
