Alpha wrote:Ok...I've heard and read a lot of ridiculousness regarding the price teams are gonna have to pay for some of these players.

Bottom line...it's bullshit.

Even for the TOP guys...Nash, Karlsson, Pacioretty...who the **** ever...NOBODY is trading 5/6/7 assets for ANY of these guys. By assets, I mean any combination of NHL-ready players, draft picks and/or prospects. NO TEAM is trading that many assets for a RENTAL...and ALL of these guys a rentals. At BEST...through NEXT year.

Historically...trading THREE for a rental is pretty epic and reserved for the best. For a player like Karlsson...I'll even stretch it to 4 but I'd be BEYOND SHOCKED if it were more than that...and I'd be a little surprised if Karlsson got 4. It just doesn't happen.

What I'm saying is just don't be surprised if we end up with a really good defenseman by giving up 2 or 3. That's "normal".

On the negative side...don't be shocked if we end up giving up a really good player and prospect. You could see T. Johnson and somebody like Raddysh/Howden (as well as a 1st) going the other way.

Finally...can any of you explain our cap situation to me? I'm ****ing confused. According to CapFriendly...they have our cap broken down as follows:

Projected Cap Space 2.2 MIL
Current Cap Space 6.95 MIL
Deadline Cap Space 10.25 MIL

WTF is the difference between our "current cap space" and our "deadline cap space"? I don't get it?

Projected cap space is what we started with. Our current cap space is higher because we've paid our players for half a season of hockey. It's like a roll over effect, the longer you play into the season the more space you're going to have because of what you are paying out to your players. So by the trade deadline we'll have 10.25 million in free money to spend on players because the salaries of the guys we've been paying is taken off the top.

I know it doesn't make much sense but just go with it. The Lightning are in the driver's seat and can spend up to 10.25 million as of the deadline

And big news, Bob McKenzie says we've begun talking to the NYR about McDonough. Doesn't mean we'll get him but at least it means we're looking that way.

Locally, they replay the games at midnight (After Midnight With the Lightning on Fox Sports Sun). That's how I watch the games that I don't get to see while working.

The replay is now into the 3rd but that 2nd period is about as good a period that you'll see all year. THAT was quintessential Lightning hockey. The puck retrieval was absurd. Great flow. Non-stop pressure. Possession was fantastic. It's amazing how good the defense looks when we have the puck all period.

One thing needs to be mentioned: Dan ****ing Girardi.

I don't know what happened in NY last year. I only know what I've read from Ranger fans who were THRILLED he was sent packing. He is a MONSTER on defense...and it's not like we have him paired up with Hedman or Strahlman either. Don't get me wrong...Koekkoek and Sustr are still getting WAY too much ice time (IMO) but the defense seems to play with a calmness when Girardi is in the game. I don't want to see him playing 20 minutes a night but there is NOTHING wrong with the guy and is hardly the liability on defense that Ranger Fan was screaming about.

Erne is here. I was wondering when we were gonna see him. He was supposed to be the call-up when Bournival and Peca were called up but he was injured. THIS is the guy (and I mentioned this in a previous post) that I THINK is gonna replace Callahan. You saw with that goal, the kind of shot he has. Killorn...but a much more natural scorer. That snapshot was unreal.

We're gonna have a problem in the next year or two. Even this year, when Palat returns. It makes me think even MORE that we're gonna HAVE to make a move before the deadline.

There are guys we CAN'T move but guys like Peca and Erne are going to make a strong case for making the team next year. There are two or three other guys that will as well. We HAVE to trade some of these pieces because there simply isn't (or won't) be room for them.

In Yzerman we trust. It'll be interesting to see what shakes out.

Nice win.

And can we FINALLY waive Paquette now?

I'm so friggin' tired of seeing his name. He's a "hustle" guy. A "scrappy" guy. He DOESN'T SCORE GOALS. He seems to be a "Cooper Guy" because he hustles, is a nice 2-way player and will grind.

He just isn't good.

We have WAY too much talent to keep this guy around. Waive him (like JT Brown) and let another team waste space by playing him (like JT Brown).

I wouldn't give a bag of Doritos for Paquette. If Yzerman can get some belly button lint for him, it's the heist of the century.

The Hockey Writers had a nice article on the Bolts trading for McDonnaugh (?) or rather...not trading for him.

As we all know...Yzerman is a genius. Wouldn't it be interesting if he is thinking about trading for a high scoring winger, instead of a defenseman.

Don't get me wrong...I still think we go get a defenseman...just food for thought...and because Yzerman is smarter than the rest of us.

Fixed for accuracy.

The 3rd goal was just an unlucky break but we had the Kings dead to rights for 2 periods. We need to start playing smarter

Meh, like you said the last goal was a deflected twice by Bolts players and got in the net. Just a bad break.

The only takeaway I have from that game is that we're getting too sloppy when we're up by large margins. If it's just a 1 goal lead we play our ass off. Any more than that and we're gonna let the the other team right back in it. This is probably like the 4th in a month we've let a team back in it and still hung on to win

After watching the replay, I felt the same. It would be refreshing to see us BURY a team, when we're up big, instead of having to tough it out.

I think it's just the mindset of the players we have...and have had for a while. This is a speed and finesse team with a LOT of Europeans. That has always been a stereotype for them...skilled but soft. Lacking a "killer instinct". This type of play has surrounded this team for several years. When we get down big, we turn it on and make it close. Or win. And vice-versa.

I don't think it's coincidental that our hard-nose guys are the French Canadian and American players.

IF this were our first trip to the playoffs, I'd be somewhat concerned...but this core has been there, done that and have proven they show up big come playoff time.

Let's see what shakes out at deadline time.

And I just listened to the "Hockey is Life" podcast, out of Canada. They just recapped the latest (2/10) rumors...and wouldn't ya know it.

Latest is the Bolts are showing interest in P. Maroon (EDM).

I'm not exactly sure why...the dude is a LW...and **** he is BIG. 6'3, 225. Clearly a POWER forward. For comparison...our current "power" forward is Alex Killorn...at 6'1, 196.

Don't know much about how Maroon plays. Is he a good FO guy? A PP guy? He has 13g/14a at this point. Killorn has 30-something pts. On a better team and fewer goals.

Maroon is considered to be a good player...but again...I'm not sure why, exactly. I guess size never hurts (if he can skate) but where does he fit in? 2nd/3rd line defensive guy who can provide offense?
