Braves unloaded Gattis today to the Astros for 3 prospects. Mike Foltynewicz is a right handed flame thrower with a decent change up. If he can put together his curveball, he will make a solid 2-3 starter.

Ruiz is a solid 3B prospect that can hit for average and has decent power. Thurman is still too early to tell on.

As a lifelong Braves fan, this is going to be a very long season. But I do like the talent they've replenished in the minors and are retooling to compete in 2 years.

I agree. Wren left the organization a mess. If you're going to rebuild, may as well do it right. I like the prospects in this trade better than the JUp deal. Now lets see if the FO has the balls to trade Kimbrel.

I actually really like the lefty Fried from the JUp deal. The ONLY reason they landed him is becaus of the TJ surgery. If he bounces back from that, he could be a great addition.

Just goes to show you the value of a solid piece versus a one year rental All Star.

I agree with the Gattis deal...pretty good return. What are your thoughts on the Heyward deal? I read Talking Chop and everyone there HATED the deal, but I thought getting Shelby Miller and a pretty good prospect in Tyrell Jenkins was solid. And I admit I wasn't as big on Heyward as others on there.

I was a huge Heyward fan. By far my favorite player. Unfortunately he just never put it together. Guy has 30/30 potential and it's just never clicked for him. I lived in DC for 4 years and I remember being on the field during the Braves batting practice. I'm a big guy (6'6, 250) and Heyward just looked like a man child. He was barely flicking his wrist and gunning it from the on deck circle to left. He was just a physical specimen.

I thought the return was okay. My thinking is this. He just got a 2 year deal. He was looking to get a huge payday and as a Boras client, he wasn't giving a hometown discount. My friend put it the best: "Wizard in the field, wanted to be paid like he's a wizard at the plate". Shelby Miller has potential, but I don't think he's anything exciting. Just a filler for our lineup currently. Jenkins has the potential from what I've read, but I don't know much about it outside of a decent fastball and an old football player.

It's going to be a few down years for the Braves, but hopefully this allows them to get back to the playoffs AND win a series or two (OR THREE). The one and done shtick got old quick.

Don't even remind me about the infield fly call.

I, for one, am glad to see the Braves and Phillies in full rebuild mode.

Of note: James Shields almost certainly will cost less than the six-year, $144 million deal they offered Max Scherzer last spring.

Nationals just committed to paying Max Scherzer for the next 15 years. Craziness! But man, their rotation is gonna be sick.

Glad Dombrowski wasn't dumb enough to give Ace money to a 6-inning pitcher. He's average at best

Scherzer has 7-year, $210M deal with Nats

I'd say he's overrated and not worth $210 (not sure many are with the exception of Kershaw), but to call him average is either jealousy or an inability to evaluate talent. Either way...you're wrong.

Plus, the Nats structured his salary in a way that won't be too hurtful in the long run.

Scherzer is nasty and so are the Nationals...Anything short of a World Series will be a failure.

Yep, but they're deferring a bunch of money. Paying him $15 mill/yr for 14 years, apparently. I like Scherzer, but that's a lot of money.

Scherzer was the prize piece this off season and that is the going price for a stud pitcher. It may be "a lot of money", but it's in a sport that doesn't have a salary cap. What will be interesting is that in the next 14 years, if a salary cap is imposed (I doubt this happens), how do contracts like this work? Will it count against their cap every year?

Look at it this way: Bobby Bonilla's contract will have years remaining when Scherzer's contract expires.

Right on time for SunTrust Park to open up. I'm a lifelong Braves fan too and I hope come to terms with the fact that they need to put on a good showing immediately once they leave Fulton County.

My Mets friends back in NY don't agree when I send them annual "Happy Bobby Bonilla Payday!" cards.

You do know Vegas odds have more to do with what the public perceives their chances to be than how well the bookmakers think they're going to actually do, right?

After living in the DC Metro area for 4+ years, it disgusts me to see the Nationals as favorites to win. That city doesn't deserve to win a championship - at least not hockey or baseball. Some of the most fair weather fans I've ever had the "pleasure" of meeting.
