When I was going to games there was the 'Whitney Bank Club' (name changed every few years) but it took up a decent sized portion of the first base side (above the first level).

But no, that is not the reason.

My old company was a sponsor of the Rays for the 'glory years'. I went to probably 15 - 20 games a season and all of the playoff games in 2008.
I know it is not ascetically pleasing but I never had an issue catching a game there. People banging on the Trop constantly gets old.

The old Yankee Stadium was a $hithole but is considered the cathedral of baseball because of the Franchise.
I was at Fenway back in the 90's and it was a crap hole as well. Both Comiskey and Comerica are located in a war zone.

It is just a lame excuse.

WOW . .. that's like play of the year material.

Now it's down to one game .. that throw takes the sails out of that inning.

When I saw that play on my crappy stream last night, I was really hoping I could find it on YouTube today so I could see a high quality video of it. Nice!

All other parts of it aside, that was one of the most seamless relays I've ever seen. I guess that's why you hit your cutoff man.

It's kind of weird, watching a game with a full stadium.

Ignoring the thousands of seats covered in tarp, there were PLENTY of empty seats for game 3. I haven't been to the Trop, but I don't think it's a situation where people are there in various clubs throughout the stadium, which is why their seat looks empty.

Ummm...attendance for games 3 and 4: 32,000. Per game.

Capacity is about 45k...so I suppose, technically, you're correct. What I found particularly amusing was the OAK/TB play-in game. OAK's stadium was half empty. You could see it on tv. Yet not one word was said about it...either during the game OR after.

Last night, the attendance was mentioned several times during the game.

The fact is, during the season...attendance is pathetic to the point that NO MATTER how good the attendance is from game to game, it's gonna be a story. No worries though, our owner is gonna help build a better, more convenient stadium in Tampa.

Oh...never mind...

8000 less than the little league world series (seats only, not counting the hill). Not bad.

Wikipedia lists the Trop's capacity as "42,735 (including tarp-covered seats)"
That number was cut down to 25k this year with the tarps. Now, it's great they're drawing 7k over "capacity," but my original point still stands. If it's a choice between two small market teams or the Yankees for prime time, it's going to the club that consistently draws huge crowds and pulls in big TV numbers.

Oakland is a legendary **** hole and the team has been fighting with the city for a while about it. I know it's easy to take shots at the Trop, but I've never heard anything about it that's as bad as Oakland. Sewage backing up into the showers and tunnels... just really disgusting ****. Guess the city (rightfully) won't give into their demands and now they're threatening to move. But that's a whole other story.

Listen...I'm not gonna stand on my head to defend this franchise. My disgust with the "ownership" is well documented here.

Point is...Tampa gets a lot of **** that other markets don't...for the EXACT same reasons.

And I was NEVER arguing the Yankees in prime time. That's a no-fucking-brainer. And if a city with 15+million people EVER drew less than a sell-out...they should IMMEDIATELY be moved.

For ****'s sake, the Lightning...the ACTUAL, REAL franchise in this city...just passed their 5th consecutive year of sell-outs. The Yucks AND Rays haven't achieved that level of success.

Tampa is a hockey town.

And that's all I was arguing when people were complaining about the playoff scheduling. What the Rays do every year on the field, with their resources, and the division they're in, is amazing. But there's a reason when you've got 4 games in a day that you're on at 2p. And there's a reason that if there's a chance there could be 2 games in a day, you've got to wait to find out what time you're playing.

And to merge the conversations, what would the Trop look like for a Yankees v Rays ALCS game?

I think Rays fans at the game will have a hard time out-cheering the Yank fans that will be there.

There was always good attendance when the Yankees or Sox came to town. But there is no doubt that the stadium would be at capacity for a series with the Yankees.

I know it was a brutal 1st inning but the Braves game looked pretty "empty" considering it was a series closeout game.

Speaking of the Braves/Cards game, I'm thinking someone at this San Francisco TV station (KTVU) is looking for a new job today.

What was the crowd like for the ALCS the Rays had against the Yankees a few years back?

Braves fans don't show up for ****. You can't really blame them. Every year they dominate the regular season and then come playoff time choke like a freshman cheerleader at her first homecoming party.

You mean 2008 vs the Red Sox, I assume?

It was packed. I am pretty sure they removed the tarps for the World Series.

Sorry yes. I thought it was the Yanks for some reason. But was the ratio in favor of the Red Sox for the Rays home games?

Didn't they just put the tarps on this season of last?

ALCS 08 game 7, same night as Bucs Seahawks. Bucs one in a blowout so they put the ALCS on the big ugly screens and a decent amount of people hung out to watch us close 'em out.

It is from wiki so not 100% but it is how I remember it:

Currently, the top ⅓ of the upper deck seating is tarped over, artificially reducing the stadium's capacity to 36,048 for the 2008 regular season. It was further reduced to 35,041 for the 2008 postseason since the tbt* Party Deck has been reserved by Major League Baseball as an auxiliary press area. On October 14, 2008, the Rays announced that the upper deck tarps would be removed for the remainder of the postseason, starting with a Game 6 of the 2008 American League Championship Series. This increased the capacity of the stadium to nearly 41,000, depending on standing-room-only tickets sold
