Good Deal?

Postby PetePierson » Sun Jan 25, 2015 10:03 pm

Picked this up for $350.00.

I only use my desktop to log into work, check email, some music, and a lot of porn an gambling. Not a gamer so don't need all the bells and whistles.

I would have preferred a faster processor, but the TB drive is a good haul at that price point, and the i3 is plenty good enough for what you plan to use it for. If I needed a reliable, low-priced machine I would entertain this one.

Thank you. That is exactly what I was looking for; low priced and reliable.

Now I just need to figure out Windows 8.1. Looks like I will be spending most of my time in the Desktop screen. The apps / titles are freaking me out!

Supposedly Windows 10 will be 8.1 that works, like Window 98 was for Windows 95 and XP for NT.

The app tiles screen is really only useful on a tablet. I've been running 8/8.1 for about a year now and I only go to that screen when I accidentally hit the windows key.

Here is what windows 10 looks like with the start menu. Apparently there is a new version they've released since I downloaded mine that allows you to switch between this and full screen...

This is going to sound very petty. Work PC runs Windows 7 Professional. I found the option to return to 'Classic View' for my desktop. I can not find it on 8.1, assuming it is not available?

Yeah. Its in its very early stages.. They haven't even decided how it is going to run.. And Its supposed to have its own browser 'spartan', but so far the early builds run IE.

VERRRRY early stages ..

No one (not one) is taking the infrastructure control units to 8.1 so Microsoft is pushing 10 ..

I don't see the street release for mid late next year.

Go here: ninite.com.

There is a box called "classic veiw" you check that will download an old school desktop like previous windows OS. It's safe so there is nothing to worry about. Then you don't have to deal with the bullshit tiles win 8 gives you.

I am trying to go smaller and fanless on my computers. With limited uses you listed a smaller computer may have been a better way to go.

Image
Zotac Zbox - Very nice fanless computer.

Zotac Zbox (w/ fan) - This unit has a fan, but comes with a 64GB SSD and room for an additional 2.5" hard drive. Right now it is at its highest price on Amazon. It can be had for $159.
